Install Git on Windows 11 with WinGet or the official Git for Windows .exe installer. Choose x64 Setup for Intel or AMD PCs, or ARM64 Setup for a Windows 11 ARM64 device; then open a new terminal and run git –version to verify the installation.
This guide covers the installer choices most users need, verification, and common setup problems.
Before installing Git
The current Git for Windows release is 2.55.0(3), released July 14, 2026. The maintained downloads include x64 and ARM64 Setup and portable packages. The regular installer is a 64-bit executable.

Option 1: Install Git with WinGet
Open Command Prompt or PowerShell and run:
winget install –id Git.Git -e –source winget
After installation, open a new terminal and verify Git:
git –version
The output should identify the installed version, for example, git version 2.55.0.windows.1. Source: Git for Windows installation page.
Option 2: Install Git with the Windows installer
- Open the official download page.
- Download x64 Setup, or ARM64 Setup if your Windows 11 device uses ARM64.
- Run the downloaded .exe file and approve the User Account Control prompt if one appears.
- Advance through the setup pages with Next, choosing the options that fit your workflow.
Installation directory and components
The standard installation directory is C:\Program Files\Git. Keep it unless you have a specific reason to install elsewhere. Depending on privileges, Setup can install per-user or for all users.
On the component page, Windows Explorer integration and Open Git Bash here add convenient File Explorer context-menu commands. Git LFS is useful for repositories that track large files. Add a Git Bash profile to Windows Terminal if you use that terminal. Desktop icons, shell-file association, and daily update checks are optional. Some builds also include Scalar, an add-on for large-scale repositories.
Choose Git’s default editor
Git uses this editor for commit messages, interactive rebases, and other text input. Choose Visual Studio Code if it is installed and is your usual editor; otherwise, Notepad is a straightforward Windows choice. Microsoft Edit is also a current installer option. For a custom editor, use Test Custom Editor before continuing.
Choose the initial branch name
The installer offers Let Git decide and Override the default branch name for new repositories. The current installer source uses master as its default branch constant. If your team expects main, select the override and enter that name. This affects newly initialized repositories, not existing branches. Source: Git for Windows installer source.
Adjust the PATH environment
For most users, select Git from the command line and also from 3rd-party software. This recommended option makes Git available in Git Bash, Command Prompt, PowerShell, Windows Terminal, and other software.

- Use Git from Git Bash only leaves Git out of the normal Windows PATH.
- Use Git and optional Unix tools from the Command Prompt adds Unix tools as well as Git. Those tools can override Windows commands such as find and sort.
Choose SSH and HTTPS options
Keep Use bundled OpenSSH unless your organization uses TortoisePlink or a separately managed OpenSSH installation. For HTTPS, the current default is Use the native Windows Secure Channel library. It validates certificates through Windows Certificate Stores, which is useful on managed computers with company root certificates. Choose OpenSSL only if a project or administrator requires it. For most Windows developers, choose Checkout Windows-style, commit Unix-style line endings. This sets core.autocrlf=true and helps avoid unnecessary line-ending changes in cross-platform projects.
- Checkout as-is, commit Unix-style line endings sets core.autocrlf=input.
- Checkout as-is, commit as-is sets core.autocrlf=false; use it when your project has a deliberate line-ending policy.
Keep Use MinTTY for the normal Git Bash experience. Choose Use Windows’ default console window if you regularly run native Windows console programs that do not behave correctly in MinTTY.
Choose pull behavior and a credential helper
The installer offers Merge, Rebase, and Fast-forward only for git pull. Choose Merge for conventional behavior, Rebase for a linear local history, or Fast-forward only to make a pull fail rather than create a merge commit or rebase local work. The installer’s explanatory text describes fast-forward-only as Git’s default, but its fresh-install fallback is Merge when no previous choice exists. Source: Git for Windows installer source.
Keep Git Credential Manager selected for typical HTTPS use. Choose None for a headless machine, an SSH-only workflow, or a system using another helper. Without a helper, HTTPS operations may repeatedly prompt for credentials. Git Credential Manager is unavailable in Setup when the computer has less than .NET Framework 4.7.2.
Extra options and installation
Leave Enable file system caching selected; it sets core.fscache=true. Enable symbolic links only if your workflow needs them and your Windows account has the SeCreateSymbolicLink permission. Changing this installer option does not alter existing repositories.
If a conditional Security options page appears with Add mandatory ASLR security exceptions, follow your organization’s security policy before enabling the exception.

- Review the selected options and click Install.
- Wait for Setup to complete.
- On the completion page, select Launch Git Bash if you want to test Git immediately, then click Finish.
Verify Git on Windows 11
Open a new Command Prompt, PowerShell, Windows Terminal tab, or Git Bash window and run:
git –version
A new shell matters because a terminal that was open during installation may not have the updated PATH. Git for Windows also adds Git Bash, Git CMD, Git GUI, Git Release Notes, and Git FAQs to the Start Menu.

Why is git not recognized in PowerShell or Command Prompt?
Close the terminal and open a new one. If Git is still not recognized, it may have been installed with Use Git from Git Bash only. Rerun Setup and choose Git from the command line and also from 3rd-party software. Source: Git for Windows installer source.
Why does PowerShell use the wrong SSH key or agent?
PowerShell or Command Prompt may find Windows’ separate OpenSSH before Git’s bundled OpenSSH. To put Git’s SSH directory first for a Command Prompt session, run:
set PATH=C:\Program Files\Git\usr\bin;%PATH%
In PowerShell, run:
$Env:PATH = “C:\Program Files\Git\usr\bin;$Env:PATH”
To initialize Git’s SSH agent environment in a new Command Prompt session, run start-ssh-agent.cmd. The SSH_AGENT_PID and SSH_AUTH_SOCK values are session-specific and must be initialized again in each new session. Source: Git for Windows FAQ.
Why do native programs behave badly in Git Bash?
MinTTY is not a native Windows console, so some interactive or full-screen programs may handle input or display incorrectly. Select Use Windows’ default console window, or use winpty where a particular program requires it. Older advice to add winpty aliases for Python or Node.js is outdated; those aliases were removed in Git for Windows 2.54. Source: Git for Windows release notes.

What if a clone fails because the path is too long?
Git for Windows refuses long paths by default. To enable them for a clone, run:
git clone -c core.longPaths=true <URL>
To enable long paths globally for your Git configuration, run git config –global core.longpaths true. Source: Git for Windows FAQ.
Why do symbolic links fail during checkout?
Creating symbolic links requires the Windows SeCreateSymbolicLink permission. If the repository needs symlinks, clone it with git clone -c core.symlinks=true <URL>. On a managed computer, an administrator may need to grant the permission or change the applicable security policy. Source: Git for Windows installer source.
Why does Git Bash change a slash-prefixed argument?
Git for Windows converts some POSIX-style paths to Windows paths before passing them to a native program. Disable conversion for one command with MSYS_NO_PATHCONV=1 git blame -L/pathconv/ msys2_path_conv.cc. Doubling the leading slash, as in //usr/bin/bash.exe, also prevents conversion. What if Git Bash crashes when mandatory ASLR is enforced?
System-wide mandatory ASLR can be incompatible with Git for Windows components. When Setup detects this condition, its Security options page may offer Add mandatory ASLR security exceptions. Why is the Quick Launch shortcut missing?
The Quick Launch shortcut is installed only for the user who runs Setup. If Setup ran as Administrator, the shortcut may belong to the Administrator account. Use the Start Menu or create a shortcut manually. Source: Git for Windows release notes.

- git svn has not been included since the 2.54 series. Use Git under WSL or install the appropriate MSYS2 package. For x64, the package is mingw-w64-ucrt-x86_64-git-svn; for Windows ARM64, it is mingw-w64-clang-aarch64-git-svn.
- git flow is no longer shipped with Git for Windows.
- git instaweb is no longer distributed with Git for Windows.

For a typical Windows 11 x64 PC, install Git with WinGet or download the official x64 Setup executable. Choose a familiar editor, enable Git from the command line and third-party software, and keep the default SSH, HTTPS, caching, and line-ending options unless your project requires something different. Open a new terminal and confirm the installation with git –version.
