It opens to Reels, with Stories at the top and messaging close at hand. Apple’s US App Store listing currently requires iPadOS 16.3 or later.
When did Instagram launch on iPad?
Instagram announced the dedicated app on September 3, 2025, US time. Meta’s newsroom post appeared on September 4 in Japan, reflecting the time-zone difference. The app was made available through Apple’s App Store. Meta said it developed the iPad experience in response to user requests for an app designed around the larger screen. Meta’s launch announcement and contemporaneous 9to5Mac coverage reported the launch.
What is different about Instagram on iPad?
Reels is the opening view
Instead of opening on the familiar feed-first screen, the iPad app launches into Reels. Stories sit across the top, and messaging is accessible with a tap. Instagram described the larger-screen design as being for “lean back entertainment,” in its launch statement reproduced by 9to5Mac.
More room for feeds, comments, and messages
The Following area includes All, Friends, and Latest views, according to launch-era MacRumors coverage. Reports also described layouts that make better use of the wider display, including viewing comments alongside a Reel or checking messages and notifications without leaving the feed. These are launch-reported interface details; screens and features can change as Instagram updates the app.

Which iPads are compatible?
As of October 2026, Apple’s US App Store listing identifies iPad as a supported device and requires iPadOS 16.3 or later. Check the listing for your region and device before installing, since availability and requirements can vary or change. The US App Store listing for Instagram also labels the app free with in-app purchases.
Some coverage at launch cited iPadOS 15.1 or later. That was the requirement reported at the time, not the current minimum shown in the US store listing; use the live listing when checking whether an iPad can install the app. MacRumors’ launch report records the earlier figure.

What did Instagram say about Reels?
In its 2025 launch announcement, Meta said more than 50% of time spent on Instagram was spent on Reels, and that users reshared Reels more than 4.5 billion times per day. These are figures reported by Meta, not independent measurements; the resharing figure refers to daily activity. The figures help explain the Reels-first choice, but they do not establish how every iPad user will use the app. Meta’s announcement gives the figures and its explanation of the design.
