Instagram reached 3 billion monthly active users, Meta announced on September 28, 2025. The figure refers to Instagram’s monthly audience—not daily users across Meta’s apps—and Meta’s announcement did not provide a more detailed count or methodology.
What does Instagram’s 3 billion users figure mean?
Meta said Instagram’s community had reached 3 billion monthly active users. In other words, it is a monthly activity measure for Instagram, not a count of people using Instagram every day and not a combined total for Meta’s services. Meta’s announcement does not spell out a more granular Instagram count or the methodology behind it. Meta’s September 28, 2025 announcement is the source of the milestone.
The distinction matters because Meta also reports a separate company-wide measure. In its Q3 2025 filing, Meta reported an average of 3.54 billion Family daily active people for September 2025. A Family daily active person is a registered, logged-in user of Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and/or WhatsApp who visited at least one of those products on a given day. That is a daily measure spanning several services, so it should not be directly compared with Instagram’s monthly figure. Meta’s filing says Family DAP is an estimate; it notes that identifying unique people is difficult at Meta’s scale because some people maintain multiple accounts, and estimates a worldwide margin of error generally around 3%. Those caveats apply to Family DAP estimates, not to a disclosed Instagram MAU methodology.
What Meta said about Instagram use
Messaging and sharing
Meta said messaging had become the most popular way for people to share photos and videos on Instagram. Instagram head Adam Mosseri separately said that DMs, Reels and recommendations had driven almost all of the service’s growth in recent years, in comments reported by TechCrunch on September 24, 2025. These statements describe Meta’s account of how people use Instagram and what it sees as growth drivers; the announcement does not independently establish that any one feature caused the 3 billion milestone.

Reels resharing
Meta said Reels were reshared more than 4.5 billion times per day across Meta platforms. This is a cross-platform figure, not an Instagram-only count, and it measures resharing activity rather than Instagram’s monthly audience.
How the milestone fits Instagram’s history
Contemporary reporting identifies 1 billion users in 2018 and more than 2 billion monthly active users in 2022 as prior public Instagram milestones. These are reported announcements, not a continuous audited series that establishes how the audience changed in every intervening year. TechCrunch’s coverage provides that milestone context.

Meta’s milestone announcement also discussed a limited test of a Reels-first app experience in India. The test was presented in that specific market context; it does not mean Instagram was rolling out a Reels-first experience globally. The audience milestone and the test are related in the announcement, but the test is not evidence that every Instagram user will see the same app experience.
