Instagram announced profile songs in August 2024, so “working on” describes an earlier stage: a similar feature was reported as an internal prototype in 2022. In the announced experience, people could select a track from Instagram’s licensed music library and let visitors play a short clip from their profile. Unlike the familiar Myspace comparison, the song did not autoplay.
Can you add a song to your Instagram profile like Myspace?
Instagram publicly announced profile songs in August 2024. At launch, the feature let a profile owner choose music from Instagram’s licensed library and display a selected portion of a song on their profile. Contemporary coverage described the clip as up to 30 seconds long. Visitors could tap to start or pause playback.
Instagram’s Creators account described the feature this way: “We’re excited to announce that you can now add a song to your profile, giving you more ways to express yourself through music.” It also said: “Your profile song selection will be live until you swap out the song.”
That makes the feature Myspace-like in its use of music for profile self-expression, but not in every detail: the reported Instagram version required a visitor to press play rather than starting automatically. The sources describe a short selected segment, not full-song playback.

- Open your profile and choose Edit Profile.
- Use the music option to select a song from Instagram’s licensed music library.
- Choose the portion to feature. Launch-era coverage reported a maximum segment length of 30 seconds.
- Save the change. Visitors can tap the song to play or pause it; the selection stays on the profile until you replace it.
These are launch-era directions reported in 2024, not a guarantee that the same controls or menu path are available to every account today. Current availability by account or region has not been verified.
Why the “working on” description is outdated
In October 2022, app researcher Alessandro Paluzzi spotted an Instagram profile-music option. Meta told PetaPixel that version was an internal prototype and was not then being tested externally. Instagram’s public announcement followed in August 2024, nearly two years later.

At launch, Instagram collaborated with Sabrina Carpenter, whose profile featured a teaser of “Taste” ahead of its release. That was a launch example, not evidence that profile songs were restricted to artists.
Don’t confuse profile songs with Instagram’s other music features
Instagram and Meta have announced several distinct ways to use music. Their controls and placement differ, so an integration or option for one feature does not establish that it is available for profile songs.

| Feature | Where music appears | What the announcement covered |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram profile songs | Instagram profile | Announced in August 2024; a profile owner selected music from Instagram’s licensed library, with launch-era reports describing a clip up to 30 seconds. |
| Add Yours Music | Instagram Stories | Meta announced music for the Add Yours Stories sticker in May 2024. Meta’s announcement concerns Stories, not profile songs. |
| Music on photo carousels | Instagram photo carousels | Meta announced adding music to photo carousels in August 2023. That announcement covers carousel posts, not profile controls. |
| Song previews in messages | Instagram chats | Meta’s March 2022 announcement covered short song previews in messages and named Apple Music, Amazon Music, and Spotify in that messaging context. It does not establish those services as profile-song integrations. |
| Facebook profile music | Facebook profile | Meta’s 2018 announcement described a music section and song pinning on Facebook. Those controls were for Facebook, not proof of Instagram profile-song controls. |
Is Instagram profile music available to everyone now?
The cited launch coverage establishes what Instagram announced in August 2024, but it does not verify availability for every Instagram account or region as of October 4, 2026. If you do not see a music option under Edit Profile, the launch-era reports alone cannot determine whether the cause is account eligibility, regional availability, a changed interface, or another limitation.
