Instagram Instants are quick, minimally edited photos shared with Close Friends or people who follow you back. Stories are temporary posts for a follower-facing audience, with more editing options. Choose Instants for a casual, more limited exchange; choose Stories for an update you want followers to see or when you want to edit the post.

How Instants work
Meta announced Instants on May 13, 2026. To open the camera, tap the mini pile of photos at the bottom-right of the Instagram inbox, or use the standalone Instants app where available. Take a photo in the moment; you cannot choose one from your phone gallery. You can add a caption, but there are no further editing options. Then choose Close Friends or followers you follow back as the audience.
The recipient sees the photo in a pile of photos in their inbox and can react, reply, or send an Instant back. The recipient-facing photo disappears after it is viewed and cannot be viewed after 24 hours. Separately, the sender’s private archive can keep shared Instants for up to one year. Meta says the sender can use that archive to make a recap and post it to Stories.
Privacy controls and limits
Meta says recipients cannot screenshot or record Instants using the feature. That is a product control, not a guarantee that someone cannot preserve or reproduce what they see by other means. A sender can undo an accidental send quickly, or delete an archived Instant to unsend it from friends who have not opened it. The inbox pile can also be snoozed temporarily.

Instagram’s block, mute, and restrict controls apply to Instants. Meta also says Teen Account and Family Center protections apply: time spent counts toward a teen’s Instagram time limit, Sleep Mode restrictions apply by default from 10 PM to 7 AM, and supervised parents are notified the first time a teen downloads the Instants app. These details are from Meta’s May 13, 2026 announcement and may change.
Availability
Meta said Instants began rolling out globally as an Instagram feature on May 13, 2026. The separate iOS and Android app was rolling out in select countries; Meta’s announcement did not name them or guarantee availability on every account. If you do not see Instants in your inbox, the feature may not yet be available to your account.

Which should you use?
- Choose Instants for a quick photo meant for Close Friends or mutual followers, when you are comfortable with live capture and minimal editing.
- Choose Stories for a temporary update aimed at followers or when you want editing tools.
- Use both if you want to turn archived Instants into a recap: Meta says you can compile them and post the recap to Stories.
