Instagram DMs are officially available in desktop web browsers: you can use Instagram messaging from a computer rather than relying on the mobile app or workarounds. Meta says the desktop experience began as a 2019 project after it saw people trying to reach messaging from desktop browsers. That matters most when you are already working or studying at a computer—but the launch history does not guarantee that every feature in the app is available on the web today.
What “official” means for Instagram DMs on the web
“Official” means Instagram built and launched its own desktop messaging experience, rather than users depending on unofficial browser workarounds. Meta says it first launched Instagram Messaging on Mobile Web by the end of the first half of 2019. Its desktop project began later that year as a hackathon project, after the company noticed people trying to use desktop browsers to get around mobile-web restrictions on messaging.
Meta reused the mobile-web implementation and adapted the interface for desktop tasks. In its July 2022 launch account, Meta described features including drag-and-drop images, presence indicators, voice messages, gallery views, support for creator and business accounts, and multiple inboxes. These are features documented at launch—not a guarantee that every one remains available to every account or browser today. Meta’s account is not a current feature-support matrix.
Why desktop access matters
A desktop browser gives people another way to keep up with Instagram conversations while they are already at a computer. It can fit more naturally into a work or study routine than switching to a phone, and the launch account described adaptations such as drag-and-drop images and gallery views for desktop use.

Meta also reported a usage change in its test: it exposed desktop messaging to 2% of Instagram’s desktop web population and said both the number of daily users who sent at least one message and the total number of messages across the apps and desktop web increased. Meta did not publish the size of either increase. The result supports the practical case that desktop access can encourage messaging; it does not quantify a broad productivity or social impact.
What the web experience includes—and what is not established
Instagram’s desktop messaging feature set may not match the mobile app. Meta’s February 2025 announcement listed message translation, music stickers, scheduled messages, pinned content, and QR codes for group chats, but did not say which of those features work on desktop web. Do not assume that an app feature is also available in a browser.

How the Messenger connection fits in
In September 2020, Instagram and Messenger leaders announced an optional update that brought a Messenger experience to Instagram, including cross-app communication and controls over where messages and calls arrived. The announcement described an opt-in at the time: “People on Instagram can decide whether to update immediately to this new experience.” That is historical context, not proof that the same cross-app features or controls are currently supported on Instagram web.

Privacy: Instagram DM encryption changed in 2026
Instagram’s web availability should not be confused with a promise that DMs are end-to-end encrypted. The Guardian reported in March 2026 that Meta planned to remove end-to-end encrypted messaging from Instagram in the coming months. A Meta spokesperson told the paper: “Very few people were opting in to end-to-end encrypted messaging in DMs, so we’re removing this option from Instagram in the coming months.” That was Meta’s explanation, not an independently verified usage statistic.
The Register reported that support for end-to-end encrypted Instagram DMs ended after May 8, 2026. It also reported that Meta had not publicly clarified what happened to previously encrypted chats, so the status of every older conversation cannot be inferred from the change. Meta’s earlier plans for Instagram encryption and its separate explanations of Messenger encryption do not establish that Instagram DMs remain encrypted now.
