LUMI is a large research supercomputer in Kajaani, Finland, whose sustainability case rests on renewable electricity, cooling suited to the northern climate and reuse of waste heat. Those features reduce some environmental impacts; they do not make computing impact-free. Its latest ranking cited here was 38th in the November 2025 Green500 list, a dated measure rather than a permanent title.
What is the LUMI supercomputer?
LUMI is a European pre-exascale research system housed in Kajaani, Finland. It is an HPE Cray EX installation with multiple partitions for different workloads—not a single, general-purpose computer. Its principal compute partitions pair AMD Instinct MI250X GPUs in LUMI-G with AMD EPYC Milan CPUs in LUMI-C. Official documentation also describes a large-memory and data-analytics partition and a Kubernetes-based cloud partition. The partitions are connected by HPE Cray Slingshot-11 in a dragonfly network topology. LUMI documentation gives up to 50 GB/s bidirectional bandwidth per endpoint, but endpoint counts and configurations vary by node type; that figure should not be read as the bandwidth of every node. Why is LUMI described as green?
The operator points to choices in both the facility and its location: certified renewable electricity, year-round free cooling enabled by Kajaani’s climate, liquid cooling that captures heat, and delivery of recovered heat to the city’s district-heating network. LUMI also says that adapting a former paper-mill site reduced the facility’s carbon footprint compared with new construction; that is the operator’s estimate, not an independently established comparison. These measures address electricity sourcing, cooling and heat use. They do not establish that the system has no emissions or that its total lifecycle footprint is lower than every comparable supercomputer. A complete comparison would need consistent accounting boundaries and evidence covering construction, equipment, energy and operations.
Heat recovery in practice
LUMI reported that it supplied over 34,100 MWh of heat to Kajaani’s district-heating network in 2025, which it estimated was about 10% of the city’s heating needs. Both are operator-reported figures for 2025, published by LUMI on 9 April 2026. LUMI’s 2025 heat-reuse report

That heat recovery makes use of energy that would otherwise need to be removed from the data center. It is a meaningful local benefit, but it is not by itself a measure of the system’s net carbon impact: that also depends on how electricity and heat are accounted for and what energy sources they displace.
What the Green500 ranking says
The Green500 ranks supercomputers by energy efficiency under its benchmark methodology. LUMI’s sustainability page lists these positions across published lists:

The latest position in that list of results is 38th in November 2025. Rankings change between editions and describe benchmark efficiency, not a full environmental audit or an all-purpose ranking of climate impact. LUMI’s Green500 history
What research uses LUMI?
LUMI supports research and industrial work that benefits from high-performance computing, including large parallel workloads. In an impact article published in January 2026, LUMI said the system had supported around 3,500 projects in academia and industry since launch. The same article reported that more than 280 peer-reviewed journal articles acknowledged LUMI access between autumn 2022 and autumn 2025. How can researchers access LUMI?
Access is allocated to projects; it is not a consumer sign-up or walk-up service. Applicants generally need to belong to a project awarded computing resources, and routes vary by consortium country and allocation channel. LUMI access instructions
A March 2026 announcement described EuroHPC Regular Access tracks for science, industry and public administration, with 2026 cut-off dates of 30 March and 4 September. Both dates have passed. What is planned next at Kajaani?
A September 2026 update described construction of a new AI Factory data center at Kajaani intended to host the next-generation LUMI-AI supercomputer and an experimental LUMI-IQ quantum computer. The update said building systems were scheduled to enter a six-month commissioning and testing phase in early 2027.
