DevToolbox is a collection Henry Y describes as 51 free browser-based developer tools, built around a straightforward idea: keep common utilities quick to reach and do as much work as possible in the browser. In a May 27, 2026 account, Y explains the motivation, the Astro architecture, the tools’ client-side behavior, and the trade-offs behind two networked features. The performance and privacy statements below are Y’s own claims, not independently verified results.

Why Henry Y built DevToolbox

Y says developers often depend on bookmarked websites for everyday jobs such as decoding JWTs, formatting JSON, generating UUIDs, and testing regular expressions. He gives three reasons for making another collection: concern about pasted data being uploaded by other services, frustration with ads inside tool interfaces, and slow loading. Those are his motivations, not evidence that all competing tools behave that way.

The project’s stated goal was to make small tasks feel immediate without requiring developers to install a command-line utility or navigate a crowded interface. That goal shaped both the page design and the decision about where computation should happen.

What the 51-tool collection includes

Y names nine examples in his account; he refers to 42 more without listing them there. The examples show the range of tasks DevToolbox is intended to cover, rather than a complete catalog.

Tool Described capabilities
JSON Formatter & Validator Beautifies and minifies JSON, and reports errors with line numbers.
JWT Decoder Decodes JSON Web Tokens.
Regex Tester Tests regular expressions.
Base64 Encoder/Decoder Works with text and images, and accepts dragged-and-dropped files.
Hash Generator Uses the Web Crypto API; the article lists MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, and SHA-512.
UUID Generator Offers v1, v4, and v7 generation, bulk generation up to 10,000 UUIDs, and CSV export.
Cron Expression Builder Provides a visual scheduler and displays the next five run times.
SQL Formatter Supports MySQL, PostgreSQL, and SQLite dialects.
DNS Lookup and SSL Checker Provides DNS lookup and SSL checking features; these involve network requests described below.

How the static-site architecture works

Y says the project had a mobile Lighthouse Performance target above 95. He argues that a Next.js static export would ship about 200 KB of JavaScript even on a page without interaction, so he chose Astro’s island architecture instead.

Static HTML first, interactive tool when needed

In this design, the page shell is static HTML, while the interactive tool is a React component hydrated with Astro’s client:visible directive when it comes into view. The intent is to avoid loading the interactive code before the reader reaches the tool.

Reported payload and loading result

Y reports that tool pages ship about 40 KB of JavaScript rather than 200+ KB, and that mobile 4G Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) is under 1.5 seconds. These are figures from his May 2026 account; it does not provide an independent benchmark, test conditions beyond mobile 4G for the LCP claim, or a current measurement. The Lighthouse score above 95 is described as a requirement, not a confirmed score.

What runs in the browser—and what makes network requests

Y says common operations such as JSON parsing, Base64 encoding, and regular-expression matching use browser APIs. That architecture can reduce the need to send input to a server, but it does not mean every feature is offline or entirely network-free.

SSL Checker

According to Y, crt.sh does not provide CORS headers, so the browser cannot make the required request directly. The SSL Checker instead uses a Cloudflare Pages Function as a proxy. Y says the domain query does not go directly from the user’s IP; the feature still involves an external request through the proxy.

DNS Lookup

Y says the DNS Lookup calls Cloudflare’s DNS-over-HTTPS endpoint directly from the browser because that endpoint supports CORS. This is also a network request, rather than a purely local operation.

His broad statement that “Nothing is ever transmitted to a server” needs to be read alongside these two exceptions. The account describes the intended data flow but does not provide an independent security audit or verify the current behavior of the site or endpoints.

Small interaction choices that shaped the tools

Y identifies several implementation choices intended to reduce friction. They are lessons from his build, not independently measured findings about all developer utilities.

  • Keyboard shortcuts: Ctrl+Enter runs a tool, while Ctrl+K clears it.
  • Example inputs: buttons help when a tool opens with an empty textarea, so a reader can see the expected input format.
  • Recent inputs: the site stores the last eight inputs in localStorage, allowing users to return to prior work on that browser.
  • Static pages plus edge functions: Y describes this combination as retaining static-site benefits while using a small number of server-side functions where required.

Roadmap ideas and what is not confirmed

In the May 2026 article, Y lists shareable URLs for all tools, TOML-to-JSON conversion, an HTTP Header Analyzer, an OpenAPI validator, and offline PWA support as roadmap items. That account does not establish whether any of them have since shipped.

It also does not independently establish DevToolbox’s current availability, current tool count, present-day performance, or the current configuration of its external endpoints. Treat the described capabilities and figures as the builder’s account at publication, not as a guarantee of the site’s state today.
