The better choice depends on your print mix, volume, local prices, and how long you keep the printer.
Which printer type is cheaper for your workload?
Start with what you print, not the printer’s advertised cost per page. Count your typical monthly black-and-white and color pages, note whether you print photos, and estimate how many years you expect to use the machine.

How to calculate total cost of ownership
Compare a particular ink tank and laser model over the same ownership period, print volume, color mix, region, and genuine-supply basis. Epson describes its TCO calculator as combining hardware purchase cost with ongoing ink or toner costs; it also identifies variables such as service and power. - Set the comparison period and workload. Estimate monthly black-and-white and color pages, then multiply by the number of months you expect to own each printer. Use the same assumptions for both models.
- Record the actual printer prices. Use current prices available to you in your region. Include the value of bundled ink or toner rather than assuming every printer arrives with the same amount.
- Calculate supply cost per page. For each genuine ink or toner option, divide its price by the manufacturer-published page yield. Apply the result to the relevant black-and-white or color pages; do not compare a color yield with a black-only workload.
- Add replacement parts and upkeep. Check whether the laser model needs a drum or other service part and when it is expected to be replaced. Include likely maintenance, power, and servicing costs where you can estimate them.
- Add the totals. Combine purchase price, expected consumables, parts, and other ownership costs for each printer. The lower total under your assumptions is the cheaper option for your workload.
Manufacturer-published yields provide a consistent comparison point, but they are not a promise of the exact number of pages you will print. What can change the result?
Included ink or toner
Starter supplies affect when you need to buy replacements, so compare the included yield as well as replenishment costs. Epson’s U.S. EcoTank product page advertises up to 6,600 color pages and up to 5,500 black pages from included ink for the described range; these are maximum brand claims, and included supplies and yield vary by model and use. Replacement drums and other parts
Some laser printers have a drum or other parts with a separate replacement schedule. Check the exact model’s documentation and include the part’s cost and expected replacement timing in your calculation; toner cost alone may not capture the full supply cost.
Print speed, capacity, and output quality
A cost comparison is useful only if each printer can handle the job. Check print speed, paper capacity, automatic duplexing, and duty-cycle needs alongside cost. For text sharpness and photo quality, compare the specific models and the kind of output you care about; printer category alone does not establish that one model meets your needs.

Why broad cost-per-page claims can mislead
Cost per page changes with the printer, supply price, yield method, page coverage, and print mix. A low quoted figure may use a particular test pattern or market sample, while your pages may use more ink or toner. Compare current local prices and model-specific published yields rather than applying a single figure across all ink tanks or lasers.
For context, Epson UK’s historical calculator listed a mono laser market average of $154.26 for the printer, 5,588 bundled pages, and $0.021 black cost per page. Those figures belong to a historical regional comparison using IDC EMEA Q2 2019 data; they are not current prices or a universal estimate. Epson’s methodology

Make the decision with your own numbers
- Choose an ink tank when regular color printing or photo flexibility matters and its higher purchase price is offset by the supplies you expect to use.
- Consider a monochrome laser when your pages are mostly black-and-white text and speed and crisp text are priorities.
- For occasional printing, calculate both totals before paying more upfront for a low-supply-cost design.
- Before buying, verify local printer and genuine-supply prices, included yields, and any model-specific parts that must be replaced.
