Infineon’s intelligent laser diode driver (iLDD) was a product announced in 2004 for SFF and SFP optical transceivers. Its defining feature was integration: one chip combined a laser diode driver, a post amplifier and a diagnostic unit. The announcement described operation from 155 Mbps to 4.25 Gbps, but it does not establish that the part remains available or supported today.

What an intelligent laser diode driver does

A laser diode driver supplies and controls the electrical drive for the laser that sends data through an optical link. In an optical transceiver, the laser converts the transmitter’s electrical data into light. The iLDD announced by Infineon went beyond a driver alone: its single chip also included a post amplifier (PA) and a diagnostic unit (DU).

The PA is a receiver-side building block that amplifies a weak electrical signal recovered from incoming light. The diagnostic unit was described as controlling the optical module and tracking laser-safety regulations. Together, these functions aimed to consolidate transmitter, receiver and module-management circuitry in one device.

What Infineon announced in 2004

EDN reported Infineon’s announcement on September 9, 2004. The device was intended for Small Form Factor (SFF) and Small Form Pluggable (SFP) optical transceivers used in fiber-based data-storage and telecommunications systems. The announcement-era specifications and capabilities were:

These figures and standards are claims in the 2004 announcement, not independent measurements or confirmation of present-day capability. The article also cited an iSuppli forecast that the optical-transceiver market would grow from US$1.2 billion in 2003 to US$3.9 billion in 2008, at approximately 26% compound annual growth. That was a forecast quoted in 2004, not a current market estimate. EDN’s September 9, 2004 report.

What the integration meant for designers

Putting the driver, post amplifier and diagnostics on one chip could reduce the number of separate components needed in a transceiver design. Infineon’s announcement presented lower cost, lower power use and an improved error rate as potential manufacturer benefits. It did not provide quantified test results for those benefits, so they should be understood as stated aims rather than demonstrated outcomes.

The announced combination also did not by itself establish compatibility with every SFF or SFP module. A design would still need to meet its optical, electrical, thermal, management and board-level requirements, and the announcement does not supply enough detail to validate a particular implementation.

Availability and present-day context

The 2004 report said first samples were available and volume production was planned for the fourth quarter of that year. A production plan is not confirmation that volume production occurred; the report does not establish the iLDD’s current availability, lifecycle status or support.

For category context, Texas Instruments describes the ONET4201LD as a 155-Mbps-to-4.25-Gbps fiber-optic laser driver with laser-bias and modulation drive, automatic power control, temperature compensation and fault detection. TI marks it obsolete and out of stock on its product page. That component is a driver, not documented as an equivalent to Infineon’s driver-plus-amplifier-plus-diagnostics integration, and the available sources do not establish drop-in compatibility. TI’s ONET4201LD product page.

A distributor listing for an ONET4201LD variant also identifies the device as obsolete. Any stock shown by a distributor is time-sensitive and does not establish current availability elsewhere. DigiKey’s ONET4201LD listing.

What to check before choosing a laser driver

For a new design or a replacement decision, compare the actual part’s documentation against the module and system requirements rather than relying on a shared data-rate range or product category. Useful checks include:

  • Supported data rates and the required modulation and optical performance.
  • Laser type and electrical interface, including whether the source is a VCSEL or an edge-emitting laser.
  • Integration level: driver only, or driver plus receive-side amplification and diagnostics.
  • Supply range, power dissipation, package and board constraints.
  • Management and safety features, standards support, and required transceiver compliance.
  • Lifecycle status and documented compatibility with the target module.

The Infineon announcement is useful as a snapshot of a 2004 integration approach, but it is not a current sourcing or design approval document.
