Start with itch.io’s Indie + No AI browse page, then narrow it by genre, platform, price or demos. Treat its results as leads, not a guarantee: the tag reflects a creator’s disclosure, not an independent audit. On Steam, search for specific gameplay tags, read the game’s AI disclosure and look for a direct developer statement if the distinction matters to you. Before deciding, define what “no AI” means to you—no generated content in the released game, or no generative tools anywhere in production. Those are different claims.

What does “human-made” mean when you’re looking for indie games?

“Human-made” is not a dependable storefront category unless you decide what evidence and production boundary you mean. A game can have human-written story and hand-drawn art while using a generated translation, or contain generated assets while its core gameplay is designed by people. A single yes-or-no label may not tell you which parts of development it covers.

It also helps to separate two questions: whether a game uses generative AI, and whether it is shovelware. Shovelware is a judgment about effort, originality and playability; AI use is a factual question about how some part of a product was made. Neither answer automatically determines the other. A human-created game can be poor, and the presence of generated content alone does not establish that a game is low quality.

Choose the boundary that matches your reason for searching. For example, a player who wants to avoid generated artwork in the released game may not care whether a developer used an AI tool to help draft code. Someone seeking a production process without generative tools may care about prototypes, marketing, contractor work and code assistance as well as the final game. Look for statements that address the boundary you actually care about.

  • Production as a whole: potentially including code assistance, prototypes and work done by contractors, whether or not it appears in the final build.

Steam’s content survey is principally about material players consume, including both pre-generated and live-generated content. An empty Steam disclosure therefore should not be read as a promise that no generative tool was used at any stage of development. itch.io’s disclosure is also a creator response, not a third-party audit.

Where can you find indie games with no-AI claims?

Use storefronts and curated directories to discover candidates, then check the evidence for each specific game. No category or curated label described here establishes that every listed game was made without generative AI.

Start with itch.io’s Indie + No AI results

The combined Indie + No AI page is the most direct starting pool in this search. It lets you filter by genre, Windows, macOS or Linux, browser play, price and demos, and choose how to sort results. That makes it possible to begin with the kind of game you want rather than scrolling through a broad list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On October 30, 2026, the page displayed 34,823 Indie + No AI results. That is a changing storefront count of tagged results, not an independently audited tally of human-made games; the number may differ when you visit. The tag is based on the creator’s response to itch.io’s disclosure field. itch.io administrator leafo wrote in the platform’s November 20, 2024 announcement: “For projects that select ‘no,’ they will receive the tag No AI.” According to the same announcement, projects that have not completed the disclosure do not automatically receive that tag.

Once a candidate catches your eye, open its project page. Read the description, inspect credits, and look at creator posts or recent updates for a statement that explains what the claim covers. A tag helps you find a game; it does not establish who made every asset or whether a claim applies to a later edition.

Use Steam tags to find candidates, then inspect each listing

On Steam, start with a distinctive genre or gameplay mechanic rather than relying on the broad “Indie” label. Steamworks documents tag filtering in search results, so you can narrow the pool to games with the mechanics you want. Then check the individual game’s AI disclosure and, if you need a stronger answer, look for a developer FAQ, development log or direct reply.

Valve distinguishes pre-generated content shipped in a game from content generated while the game is being played. Its survey is not a certification that no generative tool was used for every part of development. SteamDB’s “AI Content Disclosed” tag can help identify a disclosure, including one about marketing-only use. Its absence does not prove that the game has no generative-AI use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For Steam’s explanation of the survey, see Valve’s Steamworks Content Survey documentation. For a candidate, the useful next question is not merely whether a disclosure exists, but whether its wording covers the content or production step you want to avoid.

Use human-curated directories as leads, not guarantees

Beckstar’s charter describes human review and disclosure categories for code, visual art, audio, writing and design. However, its rules allow games with honestly disclosed AI-generated content, and its browse page includes such games. Check the relevant dimensions and the individual game’s statement instead of assuming the entire catalog is AI-free. The charter is at beckstar.games/charter.

PromoteYourIndie also has an AI selector that distinguishes an “undisclosed” status from a statement that a game is AI-free. That distinction can help you avoid treating missing information as a clean bill of health. It still does not replace checking what a creator said about a particular game.

Browse GOG for selection, then verify elsewhere

GOG’s Indie category and hand-picked selection may help you find or buy a shortlisted title. Store curation and a claim about generative-AI use are different things: the examined storefront page makes no general guarantee about how games in the category were produced. Verify the game’s claim through its creator or another relevant source before describing it as human-made.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do you check a specific game’s claim?

Make a small evidence record for each game rather than trying to infer its production history from a badge. This helps you distinguish a relevant, current statement from one that is vague, incomplete or about a different edition.

  1. Record the title, platform and edition. A claim should be tied to the version or listing you are considering. If the same title has separate editions or storefront listings, do not assume one statement automatically describes all of them.
  2. Find the actual wording. Save or note the creator’s statement and where it appeared: for example, a disclosure field, credits, FAQ, development log or direct reply. A missing statement is not an affirmative “no.”
  3. Break the claim into production areas. Check whether it addresses art, sound, voice, text, translation, code, marketing, contractors or content generated during play. If a statement covers only some areas, treat the others as unknown.
  4. Note the date and latest update you inspected. Record when the claim was made and the date of the most recent update you checked. That gives you a basis to revisit the claim if the game changes.
  5. Judge the evidence against your boundary. A statement about assets shipped to players may answer a question about the final game’s content without answering whether tools were used for prototypes or code assistance.
  6. Assess the game separately from its production claim. Check whether a demo, description or player reviews help you judge whether the game suits your genre and platform preferences. Those are playability signals, not proof about AI use.

A compact record can look like this:

  • Game and edition: title, platform and edition being considered.
  • Claim: the creator’s exact statement and its location.
  • Scope: the production areas explicitly covered.
  • Currency: statement date and latest update inspected.
  • Unknowns: any area the statement does not address.
  • Fit: genre, platform and whether a demo or other useful playability information is available.

If you recommend a game to someone else, describe the evidence precisely. “The creator states that no generative AI was used for the listed content” is more informative than calling a title simply “AI-free” when the statement’s scope is limited. If you find no direct answer, use “unknown” rather than turning silence into a claim.

What evidence is stronger than a missing badge?

An explicit creator statement is more informative than an unanswered field or an absent platform label, but it remains a creator-provided statement unless there is separate verification. Read the wording and its scope rather than treating any one status as conclusive.

Friday Night Funkin’s itch.io project page is a concrete example of a first-party statement: it names programming, art and music contributors and says, “No generative AI was used.” That is a more direct basis for a claim than inferring anything from a missing badge. It is still a statement from the project’s creators, not an independent audit of every development step.

More broadly, credits can help identify named contributors, and an FAQ or development log may explain what a short disclosure does not. They do not guarantee that every production category is covered. Match what the source actually says to what you need to know, and avoid extending a statement about one game or edition to another without evidence.

How should you interpret tags, curation and procedural generation?

These signals answer different questions. A platform tag is a discovery mechanism; a curator’s review is a selection process; procedural generation describes a way content or systems can be created. None of those, on its own, settles every question about generative-AI use or game quality.

itch.io’s quality guidelines discourage mass-produced, minimally curated AI or algorithmic listings. The guidance also distinguishes generative AI from ordinary NPC pathfinding and traditional procedural generation, which are not covered by its generative-AI tagging requirement. So the presence of generated levels or routine NPC behavior is not, by itself, evidence that a game used generative AI under that policy.

Likewise, a curated directory can help surface games a human reviewer considered, but its criteria may allow disclosed AI use. A storefront’s indie label describes a category, not a production process. Keep each signal in its lane: use it to narrow or evaluate candidates, then look for a creator statement that addresses your specific question.

What is a practical route from discovery to a shortlist?

A reliable search can be quick without pretending the available labels are definitive. Use filters to find promising games, then spend verification effort only on titles you may actually play.

  1. Pick a genre and platform. Decide what you want to play and whether you need Windows, macOS, Linux or browser access.
  2. Search itch.io’s combined tags. Open the Indie + No AI results, apply the relevant filters and note promising titles. Remember that the result count changes and the tag is not an audit.
  3. Search Steam by mechanic when useful. Use specific tags to find additional candidates, then inspect the game’s own disclosure rather than assuming the Indie label answers the AI question.
  4. Check the creator’s evidence. Read the description, credits, posts or direct responses. Record what categories the statement covers and when it was made.
  5. Use directories and stores to widen discovery. Treat Beckstar, PromoteYourIndie and GOG as ways to find candidates, not substitutes for checking a title’s own evidence.
  6. Keep a shortlist with unknowns visible. Compare candidates by claim scope, source, currency, curation evidence, playable demo or reviews, and your preferred genre and platform. If a category is not addressed, mark it unknown.

This approach avoids two common mistakes: rejecting a game based on an unclear label without reading its statement, and declaring a game AI-free just because no disclosure is visible. It also lets you find games based on what you actually want to play rather than treating production claims as a proxy for quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Steam’s AI survey cover tools used only to improve development efficiency?

Valve’s documentation says, “Efficiency gains through the use of these tools is not the focus of this section.” That wording is a reason not to interpret the survey as a complete inventory of every tool used during production.

What is an example of a developer answering an AI question directly?

In a Steam discussion, the developer account for Schrödinger’s Call replied: “No, we did not use generative AI or any other AI-generated content in the development of this game.” It is an example of the kind of direct response to seek, not grounds to extend the answer to later builds or to label the game indie.

How many projects does itch.io have, and does that figure prove anything about AI use?

itch.io’s living quality-guidelines page says the platform has over 1 million projects, but gives no publication year for that figure. It is not a dated industry study or a count of games independently verified as human-made.
