After a layoff, build your portfolio around the work you can do next: name your target role, lead with your most relevant project, and make your personal contribution easy to verify. A strong portfolio can include shipped games, finished small projects, or prototypes; it does not need to turn the layoff into a credential or explain it on every project page. Show only material you are allowed to share, and give employers a clear route to your résumé and contact details.

What should an indie game developer portfolio prove?

It should help someone reviewing your application answer three questions quickly: What role are you aiming for? What did you personally make? And what evidence lets me understand the quality and judgment behind it? A game’s title or studio credit alone does not answer the second question when the work was collaborative. Describe the systems, assets, decisions, or production responsibilities you owned, and credit the people who contributed alongside you.

Think of the portfolio as evidence for your next role, not a complete archive of every project you have touched. The Worcester Polytechnic Institute Career Development Center recommends quality over quantity and putting the strongest relevant work first in its 2026 portfolio guidance. That means a focused selection with clear explanations can serve you better than a long list of titles with no account of your contribution.

A layoff is context for a career transition, not proof of your craft. Your portfolio does not have to narrate the circumstances of your former employer or repeat the layoff explanation on project pages. Keep the emphasis on demonstrable work, the choices you made, and the kind of work you want to do next.

What should go on the landing page?

Make the first screen orient a visitor and give them a next step. A practical landing section includes your name, a specific target role or specialty, a one-sentence description of your value, a featured project, a résumé link, and a current contact method.

  • Target role: Use a label such as gameplay programmer, level designer, technical artist, or indie generalist. If your goal is broad, state that clearly rather than leaving the reader to infer it.
  • Value proposition: Summarize the kind of problem you solve or work you contribute. Keep it factual and consistent with the project evidence below.
  • Featured project: Choose the strongest work for the role you are seeking, not necessarily the most famous title or most recent item.
  • Application route: Link a current résumé and provide an email or other reliable contact route. Keep project links easy to find.

SAE’s portfolio guidance for the gaming industry also advises placing the strongest relevant work first. Reorder the featured work when applying for a different specialty; one fixed sequence may not make the case equally well for every opening.

How many projects should you include?

WPI suggests three to five strong projects as a recommendation, not as a validated hiring cutoff. It is not a rule that disqualifies a developer whose best evidence is one substantial shipped game. Select enough work to demonstrate the capabilities the target role needs, and stop before weaker entries dilute the signal.

A useful mix might be a relevant shipped title plus a complementary prototype, game-jam entry, or independently finished small game. If your strongest employer work cannot be shown, a compact skill demonstration can help fill the gap, provided it is clearly labeled and does not copy protected internal material. A prototype can show a mechanic or a design decision; be candid about its scope and whether it is finished.

For every candidate project, ask whether it adds evidence that the others do not. Does it demonstrate a relevant skill, a different kind of responsibility, the ability to finish work, or a useful decision-making process? If not, it may not need a place on the site. The aim is not to hit a magic number, but to make a convincing, inspectable case without padding.

What belongs on each project page?

Give each selected project a page that a reviewer can scan and inspect without guessing what you contributed. A project page should connect the finished work to your role, the constraints you faced, and the evidence that can be shared.

  1. Identify the project. Give its title, a concise premise, release status, platform, and dates or timeframe if useful.
  2. Define your role and scope. State your role, team size where known, collaborators, and the systems, assets, or tasks you personally owned. Distinguish your work from team work.
  3. Name the tools and context. List the engine and relevant tools, and provide the studio or project context when it is appropriate and authorized.
  4. Show the work. Add useful screenshots, a short captioned clip, a playable build, or other evidence suited to the role. Explain what each item demonstrates rather than relying on a gallery with no context.
  5. Explain decisions. Describe the goal, constraints, important choices, and iterations. Include outcomes only when you can support them; state limitations or unfinished scope plainly.
  6. Offer permitted links. Link to a store page, playable build, repository, or other public evidence where you have permission. If a build is large or unavailable, a short video or screenshots can still make the work inspectable.

A practitioner who says they have hired game designers has specifically recommended including role, engine, studio, team size, project URL, duration, and shipped platforms. That is one practitioner’s perspective, not a universal recruiter rule, but it illustrates how concrete context helps a reviewer understand a project. A firsthand discussion on r/gamedesign likewise stresses naming your specific contributions.

What evidence should you show for different game-development roles?

Use evidence that makes the target skill visible. The same project can support different applications, but the page should foreground the work relevant to each role rather than presenting an undifferentiated set of screenshots.

Gameplay programmer

Show a playable mechanic or concise clip, explain the technical choices that matter, and identify the tools you used. A code sample or repository can help when you own it and are permitted to share it. Make clear which part of the implementation is yours, especially if the project itself was made by a team.

Level or systems designer

Show a playable sequence, greybox, or other design evidence, then explain the intended goal and constraints. Describe how iteration or balancing changed the design. If you have an outcome to report, distinguish observed or measured results from your interpretation; do not imply measurement where none occurred.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Artist or technical artist

Choose focused work and show the relevant process: for example, a topology or layer breakdown, or the result of a tool or engine workflow. Make clear what you created and what came from collaborators, commissions, or licensed assets. The final image matters, but process evidence can explain how you achieved it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Producer

Use authorized, de-identified evidence of schedule or risk decisions. Explain the situation and your responsibility without exposing confidential project details or identifying information that should not be public.

QA

A de-identified reproducible bug report can show how you reason about testing, severity, and communication. Remove sensitive project details and make the example legible as evidence of your own judgment.

Indie generalist

A finished game can be useful evidence, but explain which design, programming, art, production, and publishing tasks you personally handled. Identify collaborator-made and purchased assets rather than allowing a polished whole to imply that every part was yours.

How can you explain decisions without inventing results?

Use a short case-study structure: goal, constraints, your contribution, decisions and iteration, then outcome or limitation. The outcome need not be a player metric. It can be an honest description of what was completed, what changed during development, or what remains unfinished. If you cite a number, say what was measured and avoid presenting an impression as data.

The GameDev Careers Editorial Desk makes this point in its July 2026 portfolio guidance: “Do not turn an unmeasured impression into a metric.” Do not claim to have run user tests, improved retention, or achieved a player response unless you have documented grounds to say so. A clear explanation of the decision and its limits is more credible than an unsupported success claim.

Keep the case study proportionate. A reader should be able to find the project proof quickly, then read more about the part relevant to the role. Captions and headings can connect a specific screenshot or clip to a design, art, or technical choice; a paragraph that only praises the project cannot.

What can you show from a former employer’s game?

Do not assume that a public credit, password-protected page, or layoff gives you permission to publish company code, assets, unreleased footage, or internal documents. Rights and agreements vary, and this is a practical precaution rather than legal advice about any particular contract.

Before including nonpublic material, ask the relevant rights holder what can be shared and in what form. If you do not have permission, restrict the page to authorized public facts and evidence, such as a public title credit or published store page, and describe your role only to the extent you are allowed. Do not take company files to build a portfolio page, and do not treat making a page private as a way around a confidentiality restriction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the work you most want to show is restricted, make a small, independent demonstration of the underlying skill without copying an internal feature, asset, or design. Label it as an independent sample and state its scope accurately. A small finished game, game-jam project, or mechanic prototype can provide evidence without pretending to be the former employer’s work.

Where should you publish the portfolio?

Choose a format that lets reviewers reach the work easily; a premium website or elaborate design system is not a prerequisite. SAE identifies PDFs, websites, and site builders as possible formats. WPI points indie developers toward itch.io plus GitHub Pages, gameplay programmers toward GitHub and itch.io, and artists toward ArtStation. These are route options, not a required stack or endorsement of a paid subscription.

If you offer a downloadable build, state the platform it runs on and include a short video fallback. That gives a reviewer a way to understand the work even if they cannot or do not want to install it. For a large or restricted project, use permitted alternatives such as a concise clip, screenshots, a public page, or a description of your contribution; do not promise access to material you cannot share.

Before sending applications, review the portfolio across devices and browsers, check that the navigation and contact route are clear, and confirm that project links point where you intend. These checks are practical maintenance, not a claim that any particular platform or build has been tested for you.

How can you assemble the portfolio efficiently after a layoff?

Start with what is available and authorized rather than waiting for a perfect site. A simple central page and a few well-explained projects are enough to make the evidence navigable.

  1. Choose the next-role target. Write down the specialty or indie-generalist position you want to pursue, then identify what evidence that role needs.
  2. Inventory your work. Separate public and shareable work from material that may be restricted. Note your exact responsibilities, collaborators, tools, project status, and available proof for each candidate.
  3. Select and order projects. Put the most role-relevant work first. Include complementary independent work where it strengthens the case, rather than adding entries only to make the portfolio look larger.
  4. Draft each page from evidence. Use the project structure above. Verify credits, distinguish personal work from team work, and remove claims or files you cannot support or publish.
  5. Publish a straightforward hub. Link project pages, a current résumé, and a contact method. Use a video or other permitted fallback when a build cannot be conveniently inspected.
  6. Review the application path. Check presentation on more than one screen size, confirm that links work, and make sure a visitor can move from the landing page to relevant proof and contact information without hunting.

The resulting portfolio should make a focused case for your next job: the work is visible, your contribution is explicit, and the boundaries around confidential material are respected. It need not disguise the layoff or overstate what a project achieved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I put an unreleased game in my portfolio?

Only include material you are authorized to share. If the project is unreleased and its contents are restricted, ask the rights holder what can be disclosed; otherwise use public information or an independent sample to demonstrate the relevant skill.

Does my portfolio need to repeat everything on my résumé?

No. Use the résumé to present your experience and chronology, and let project pages provide evidence and detail about selected work. Keep titles, dates, and role descriptions consistent between the two.

Should I mention that I was laid off when applying for game jobs?

A portfolio is usually better spent demonstrating your work than explaining the employer’s staffing decision. If an application or interview asks about the transition, answer that context directly there rather than making it the organizing theme of every project page.
