India reported USD 93.69 billion in trade with Africa in FY 2025–26, comprising USD 45.42 billion in Indian exports and USD 48.27 billion in imports, according to a Government of India announcement in May 2026. That is a continent-wide fiscal-year total, not a calendar-year figure. The reported numbers show a modest import-heavy balance for India, while country examples and policy priorities reveal a relationship extending beyond merchandise trade.

How much does India trade with Africa?

The Government of India reported bilateral trade of USD 93.69 billion in FY 2025–26, up 14.39% from the previous fiscal year. It reported exports from India to Africa of USD 45.42 billion and imports to India from Africa of USD 48.27 billion. The difference between those reported flows is USD 2.85 billion more in imports than exports.

These are Indian government-reported figures. They do not, by themselves, establish how the same trade would appear in African Union or individual partner-country statistics: the available figures do not provide a harmonized comparison of the different reporting systems. They also do not break down the continent-wide total by country or product.

Which African countries are important trade partners?

Available government figures show substantial activity with South Africa, Nigeria and Ethiopia, but they cover different fiscal years. They are useful country examples, not a current league table: comparing them as if they describe the same period would be misleading.

Partner Reported bilateral trade Additional country-specific figure Source and period
South Africa USD 19.25 billion Indian businesses had invested more than USD 1.3 billion from April 2000 through September 2024. Government of India; trade in FY 2023–24, investment through September 2024.
Nigeria USD 7.13 billion A separate earlier figure was USD 14.95 billion in FY 2021–22. High Commission of India in Abuja; trade in FY 2024–25 and FY 2021–22.
Ethiopia USD 550.19 million: USD 476.81 million in Indian exports and USD 73.38 million in imports. The Government of India profile reports more than 675 Indian companies registered with the Ethiopian Investment Commission and investment above USD 6.5 billion. Government of India; trade in FY 2024–25. Investment figures are government-reported.

The Nigeria figures indicate a lower reported total in FY 2024–25 than in FY 2021–22, but they do not explain the causes of the change. A separate Government of India report put India–Nigeria trade at USD 11.8 billion in FY 2022–23 and described Nigeria as a major Indian partner in Africa. That figure is another point in the timeline, not a substitute for the more recent FY 2024–25 country-page value.

Country trade totals, investment figures and announced project opportunities measure different things. Nor can these three examples establish Africa’s largest partners: a defensible ranking would require country-level figures for one common fiscal period and a consistent statistical basis.

What does India trade with Africa?

The figures above measure total merchandise trade, but they do not identify which products account for the flows. The official material cited for these totals does not supply a product-by-product breakdown, so it cannot support a precise answer about the largest commodities or their shares. The reported aggregate import surplus also does not show which countries or products account for the difference.

Policy statements and bilateral meeting agendas point to areas governments want to develop, but those priorities are not evidence of current trade volumes. At the May 2026 India–Africa Business Dialogue curtain-raiser, India’s Commerce Minister identified agriculture and food processing, digital public infrastructure, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, critical minerals, electric mobility, manufacturing, defence production and emerging technologies as fields for future collaboration.

At an India–Nigeria Joint Trade Committee meeting in April 2024, officials discussed oil and natural gas, pharmaceuticals, UPI, local-currency settlement, power and renewable energy, agriculture and food processing, education, transport, railways, aviation and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), as well as market access. This is a record of the topics on a bilateral agenda, not a measure of completed deals or sector-level trade.

How are the economic ties intended to evolve?

Indian officials have advocated moving beyond raw-material trade toward higher-value products, integrated supply chains, local manufacturing and technology-driven cooperation. That is a stated policy ambition; the figures available here do not demonstrate that the shift has already happened or quantify its progress.

The technology agenda is part of a broader economic relationship. Digital public infrastructure and UPI appear in cooperation discussions alongside health, energy, agriculture, transport and manufacturing. Their presence signals areas for engagement, not proof of deployment, adoption or commercial scale across African markets.

Which agreements and institutions support the relationship?

India–Mauritius agreement and Southern African discussions

India’s Department of Commerce says the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation and Partnership Agreement (CECPA) with Mauritius entered into force on 1 April 2021 and describes it as India’s first trade agreement with an African country. The department’s Africa page also records engagement with the Southern African Customs Union on a preferential trade agreement; that engagement should not be confused with a concluded agreement.

Africa–India partnership framework

The African Union describes the partnership framework as covering trade and industry, agriculture, energy, infrastructure, education and skills, health, and peace and security. Its stated aims also include investment, technology transfer, capacity building, political dialogue and people-to-people links. That scope helps explain why economic ties include more than the value of goods crossing borders.

Business forums and project discussions

The Government of India Department of Commerce annual report records the 19th CII India Africa Business Conclave, held in New Delhi on 20–22 August 2024. It reported participation from 47 African countries, 380 project opportunities and more than 780 business-to-business meetings. These are event-reported engagement figures; they do not establish that the opportunities became investments or that the meetings produced trade.
