There is no universally best way to vote. Choose among the methods available for your election by weighing your schedule, travel and accessibility needs, and whether you can meet the rules for requesting and returning a mail ballot. State and local election offices set the details that determine what you can use; confirm them before making a plan.
What the three voting methods mean
Election Day in-person voting
You vote at a location and during hours assigned or permitted by your jurisdiction on Election Day. Check your polling location, hours, identification rules, and available assistance with your election office before you go. USA.gov’s early-voting and polling information directs voters to official state election offices for local details.
Early in-person voting
You cast your ballot in person before Election Day, if your jurisdiction offers the option. Early-voting dates, hours, locations, and whether you may use any location or must use a designated one vary. Confirm the schedule and site for your election locally. USA.gov provides a route to state election information.
Voting by mail
Mail-ballot arrangements differ: you may need to request an absentee ballot, qualify under an excuse-based program, receive a ballot through an all-mail program, or follow another local process. Eligibility and whether a request must be made again for each election depend on the jurisdiction. Check your state or territory’s rules before relying on mail voting. USA.gov’s absentee-voting guidance points voters to official rules.

Terminology can also differ. The U.S. Department of Justice describes early voting as typically open to eligible voters, while in-person absentee voting is typically limited to voters qualified to cast a mail ballot. These are general descriptions, not a determination of who may vote in a particular place. DOJ voting and elections guidance explains the distinction in general terms.
How to choose the method that fits
1. Check which methods you can actually use
- Confirm that you are registered at your current address and learn which methods are available for your election.
- If considering a mail ballot, check whether you are eligible, whether you must submit a request, and when that request is due.
- Use your state or local election office for the controlling rules; national guidance cannot establish your personal eligibility, location, hours, or deadlines.
2. Match voting to your schedule and travel
If you can reach an in-person voting site during its hours, compare Election Day with any early-voting dates offered locally. Early voting can give you another in-person opportunity, but its locations and calendar are jurisdiction-specific. A mail ballot may suit travel or other scheduling constraints only if you can receive it and return it as required.

3. Build in time for a mail ballot
Separate the ballot-request deadline from the ballot-return deadline. Confirm whether the ballot must be postmarked by the deadline or received by it; those are different requirements. The U.S. Election Assistance Commission relays the U.S. Postal Service recommendation to mail a ballot at least one week before the state deadline. Some jurisdictions provide drop boxes or allow in-person ballot return, but availability and locations must be checked locally. The EAC’s voting-by-mail guidance covers timing and return considerations.
4. Follow the ballot and envelope instructions
Read the full return-envelope instructions and complete every requested field. Depending on the jurisdiction, a ballot may require a witness or notary signature, and postage may or may not be prepaid. Many states offer online ballot-status tracking; check your election office’s site to see whether it is available for your ballot. The EAC outlines common mail-ballot steps and cautions.

- Raffle Ticket Box Entry Slot: The raffle ticket box directs paper entries through a top slot into a paperboard container, helping event hosts keep submitted slips together rather than scattered across a registration table during school fairs and company gatherings
- Raffle Boxes for Multiple Stations: These raffle boxes provide 12 matching paperboard units for event coordinators setting up separate collection points, so entries from different activities need not share one container at fundraising events or community fairs
- Suggestion Box with Blank Header: The suggestion box pairs a paperboard body with an upright blank header for your own labels, helping office managers identify the collection point and reduce confusion caused by unmarked containers in reception areas or staff rooms
- Raffle Box for Custom Labels: The raffle box has plain white paperboard surfaces that give party planners space for their own event labels, avoiding a fixed printed theme that may not match the occasion at school celebrations, company events or fundraising tables
- Ballot Box for Classroom Activities: The ballot box gathers written choices inside a paperboard body, helping teachers keep submitted slips separate from worksheets and other classroom materials during group activities instead of leaving them in loose desk piles
5. Include accessibility and language needs
Ask the election office what services are available for your needs, including accessible voting machines, assistance, curbside voting where offered, accessible ballot formats, language help, and accessible ways to request, mark, or return a mail ballot. Voting rights apply, but the specific service and process must be confirmed with the office administering the election. USA.gov’s voting-rights guidance describes federal protections and directs voters to election officials for assistance.
6. Ask before switching methods
Do not assume that receiving a mail ballot automatically bars you from voting in person, or that the same switch procedure applies everywhere. Before changing plans, contact your election office. Local rules may require you to return an uncast ballot, exchange it, or follow another procedure. USA.gov’s absentee-voting information directs voters to the relevant state election office.

What the national numbers do—and do not—show
The U.S. Election Assistance Commission reported that more than two-thirds of voters nationwide cast ballots in person in 2022, either through early voting or on Election Day. This historical figure combines the two in-person methods; it does not describe current voting shares or show that one method is better. The EAC’s studies and reports include its election administration reporting.

Election officials can record whether you cast a ballot, but not how you voted. As the EAC puts it: “Election officials keep a record of whether you cast a ballot, but they are never able to tell how you voted.” The statement appears on its mail-voting page dated December 23, 2025.
