The electric drone in “New Electric Drone Has Groundbreaking Flight Time” is Impossible Aerospace’s US-1. In 2018, IEEE Spectrum reported that it flew for two hours on one charge—an announcement-era claim, not a verified specification for the current US-1 MKII. Current materials list up to about 70 minutes, with payload figures that differ between sources.
How long can the US-1 drone fly?
The answer depends on which version and source you mean. IEEE Spectrum reported a two-hour flight on a single charge for the US-1 in its 10 September 2018 article. Current product and corporate materials instead describe roughly 70 minutes of flight time for the US-1/US-1 MKII.
| Source and date | Flight-time claim | Payload information |
|---|---|---|
| IEEE Spectrum, 10 September 2018 | Two hours on one charge | Up to 2 kg |
| Dynamic Aerospace Systems, 2026 SEC filing | 70+ minutes | 3 kg payload |
| SOLID UAVS US-1 MKII product page | Up to 70 minutes | 6 lb standard payload |
The current figures come from different sources and do not establish identical aircraft configurations or test conditions. The available materials do not reconcile the payload figures or say whether the endurance numbers were measured with matching payloads, flight profiles, or weather. Treat two hours as the historical 2018 claim, not as the assured endurance of a currently offered configuration.
IEEE Spectrum also reported that Impossible Aerospace described about 25 minutes as the industry average for battery-powered drones at the time. That was the company’s comparison, not an independently established benchmark or a controlled head-to-head test.

What was the Impossible Aerospace US-1?
The US-1 was an electric quadcopter designed by Impossible Aerospace. Its distinctive idea was to make the battery part of the airframe rather than add a battery pack after designing the aircraft around its payload and propulsion.
In the 2018 IEEE Spectrum article, founder and CEO Spencer Gore said, “Most drones are designed with the philosophy that once you are done figuring out the payload and propulsion, you add the battery pack. Instead, from the very beginning, we designed a battery pack that was meant to fly.” He also described the battery pack as part of the structural frame, saying it had “no conventional rods or beams that carry loads.”
How does the battery-integrated frame work?
In a conventional arrangement, a battery is a separate component carried by the frame. The US-1’s design instead treated the battery assembly as part of the load-bearing structure. In principle, designing the aircraft and energy storage together can use the airframe’s volume and structure differently from a design that accommodates a removable pack as an add-on.
The source describes that design concept but does not provide independent engineering measurements showing how much mass, volume, or flight time it saved. The two-hour claim therefore should not be treated as proof that battery integration alone caused a particular endurance improvement.
What were the US-1’s 2018 specifications and proposed uses?
IEEE Spectrum reported the following specifications for the launch-era US-1. They are historical figures, not a complete specification sheet for the current US-1 MKII.

The article presented emergency services, police, and search-and-rescue as prospective users. It described possible missions such as locating lost people, delivering medical supplies, and spotting fire hotspots. Those examples were proposed applications, not evidence that the aircraft had achieved those outcomes in documented deployments.

The 2018 IEEE Spectrum article covered an announcement-era aircraft and said delivery was expected in late 2018. That forecast and the article’s $7,500 starting price are historical; neither establishes current availability or pricing.
A 2026 SEC filing says Dynamic Aerospace Systems acquired Impossible Aerospace assets in April 2025 and includes the US-1 in its UAV portfolio. It reports 70+ minutes of flight time with a 3 kg payload and describes planned technical upgrades to the US-1 MKII. SOLID UAVS’s US-1 MKII page lists up to 70 minutes and a standard 6 lb payload. These sources establish that the model remains represented in current corporate/product materials, but do not provide enough information to confirm configuration equivalence or independently validate endurance under a common test protocol.
How should you compare the US-1 with another drone?
Flight-time figures are useful only when the conditions behind them are comparable. A maximum advertised duration, a company-reported flight, and the time available for a real mission are not necessarily the same measure.
- Compare endurance at the same payload, not just the no-payload maximum.
- Check whether the number is an advertised maximum or a measured mission duration, and note the source and test date.
- Account for weather, flight profile, and battery state when interpreting a result.
- For a commercial purchase, also verify payload capacity, charging time, current availability, support, and total system cost.
The cited sources do not establish present-day pricing, support terms, or a controlled comparison with competing aircraft. Those details should be confirmed directly for the configuration being considered.
