Choose an image format by matching the file to its content, required quality, transparency or animation needs, delivery targets, and browser support. Use SVG for scalable artwork, JPEG for compatible photographs, PNG for lossless screenshots and transparency, WebP for broadly supported modern web images, and AVIF when advanced compression is worth checking against your target browsers. Keep a practical fallback when compatibility matters.
Start with the image, not the extension
There is no universally best format. A format that is excellent for a photograph can make a text-heavy screenshot look poor, while a lossless format that preserves every pixel can be unnecessarily large for a background photo. Decide in this order:
- Content: photo, screenshot, logo, diagram, icon, or animation.
- Required features: transparency, animation, high bit depth, color accuracy, or progressive display.
- Quality target: lossless pixel identity or visually similar lossy output.
- Delivery environment: current browsers only, older browsers, native applications, email, or an offline workflow.
- Size and operational cost: storage, bandwidth, decoding time, and the complexity of maintaining variants.
Compression results are image-dependent. The often-quoted savings for WebP are averages, not a promise for every source image or encoder setting.
Format comparison at a glance
| Format | Best fit | Important strengths | Limitations and decisions |
|---|---|---|---|
| JPEG | Photographs and compatibility-first delivery | Small lossy files and very broad support | No transparency; repeated editing can compound artifacts |
| PNG | Screenshots, line art, logos, and transparent graphics | Lossless raster quality and alpha transparency | Often larger than modern alternatives for photographic content |
| WebP | Most web photographs and graphics | Lossy and lossless still images, transparency, and animation | Use a fallback when older or constrained clients matter; no progressive display |
| AVIF | Size-sensitive still or animated images | Advanced compression, transparency, animation, and higher color depths | Support and feature behavior vary by browser history and version; no progressive display |
| SVG | Icons, interface artwork, diagrams, and charts | Vector scaling without pixelation | Not a replacement for photographic raster images; sanitize untrusted SVG files |
| GIF/APNG | Existing basic animations or a required legacy workflow | Established animation options; APNG supports lossless animation | For new web animation, WebP, AVIF, or APNG may be more efficient than GIF |
| JPEG XL | High-resolution raster workflows where supported | Multiple advanced image features | Browser support is not universal, so provide a fallback |
JPEG: the compatibility-first photograph format
JPEG uses lossy compression. It is a sensible default for photos when the audience includes older software or when a single widely recognized file is more valuable than the smallest possible transfer. Quality settings trade file size against ringing, blocking, and loss of fine detail. Export from the original rather than repeatedly re-saving an already compressed JPEG.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
JPEG cannot carry transparency. If a subject must sit over an arbitrary page background, use PNG, WebP, AVIF, or an SVG illustration instead. For a normal rectangular photograph with no alpha channel, JPEG remains a practical fallback even when a modern format is the primary representation.
PNG: exact pixels and transparency
PNG is lossless, so text, sharp edges, UI screenshots, diagrams, and flat-color logos remain clean. Its alpha channel makes it useful for overlays and irregular shapes. The same lossless behavior can make photographic PNGs much larger than necessary; converting a photo to PNG does not preserve more useful detail than the source contains.
Use PNG when artifacts would be obvious
- Browser or application screenshots containing small text.
- Charts, diagrams, and line drawings with high-contrast edges.
- Logos that need exact color boundaries.
- Images requiring transparent pixels and a lossless workflow.
WebP: a strong general web default
WebP supports lossy and lossless still images, transparency, and animation. MDN reports that lossy WebP images are on average 25–35% smaller than JPEG images at visually similar compression levels, and that lossless WebP is typically 26% smaller than the same images in PNG. Those figures are averages from the guide, not guaranteed savings for your files.
Current major browsers broadly support WebP, but the exact audience and embedded browser versions still matter. WebP does not support progressive rendering, so do not assume a partially displayed image will appear while the file is downloading. Keep a fallback if an older client, document converter, or native library must display the image.

AVIF can encode still and animated images, transparency, and higher color depths. It is attractive when bandwidth is a major constraint or when gradients and photographic detail benefit from its compression tools. Encoding can be more computationally expensive, and support varies by browser version and by the specific feature you use. AVIF also does not support progressive rendering.

Do not replace every fallback solely because a current desktop browser displays AVIF. Check the browsers, crawlers, email clients, desktop applications, and image-processing libraries that actually consume your files. A <picture> element lets you offer AVIF first, then WebP, then a conservative raster fallback.
SVG: choose vectors for scalable artwork
SVG describes shapes, paths, text, and fills rather than a fixed pixel grid. It is usually the right choice for icons, interface symbols, diagrams, charts, and logos that must remain sharp at multiple sizes or on high-density screens. It is not automatically smaller than a raster image, especially for a detailed illustration, and it is not a substitute for a camera photograph.
SVG safety and delivery checks
- Sanitize SVG files received from users or third parties before serving them.
- Set the correct
image/svg+xmlmedia type. - Define a viewBox so the artwork scales predictably.
- Test text rendering and font dependencies on every target platform.
GIF, APNG and JPEG XL
GIF remains useful when an existing system requires it, but its limited palette and inefficient animation make it a poor default for new work. MDN recommends considering WebP, AVIF, or APNG for animation; choose among them according to the clients that must decode the file and whether lossless frames are required.

JPEG XL offers advanced features for high-resolution raster workflows, but browser support is not universal. If you use it, provide a fallback rather than assuming every web or application client can open it.
Deliver alternatives with HTML
Use <picture> when the browser may choose among encoded representations. The first matching <source> wins; the nested <img> remains the fallback and should be useful on its own.

Two or three sources are common; adding more increases build, cache, testing, and monitoring work. Use media conditions when the art direction genuinely changes, not merely to multiply near-identical files. Set accurate dimensions to reduce layout shifts and serve the correct media type: common values include image/jpeg, image/png, image/webp, image/avif, and image/svg+xml.
Content negotiation and image CDNs
Browsers can advertise supported image media types in request headers. A server or CDN can use that information to select a representation, but caching, proxy behavior, URL design, and response headers determine whether negotiation works correctly. Test the complete stack rather than assuming a header alone will select the right file.

An image CDN can transform originals and deliver a format suited to a device or browser. Establish a stable source image, explicit resizing and quality rules, and cache keys that include every transformation. Keep an original so you can regenerate derivatives when your encoder or quality policy changes.
A practical selection workflow
- Classify the source. Mark it as photo, screenshot, line art, logo, vector artwork, or animation.
- Choose fidelity. Use lossless for text and hard edges; use carefully tuned lossy compression for photos when visual review shows no objectionable artifacts.
- Check features. Confirm transparency, animation, color depth, and progressive-display requirements before exporting.
- Define clients. List supported browser versions, embedded webviews, native libraries, email clients, and crawlers.
- Encode candidates. Compare JPEG, WebP, AVIF, or PNG at equivalent visual quality, not just a nominal quality number.
- Inspect difficult areas. Zoom into text, hair, gradients, transparency edges, and animation frames.
- Publish a fallback. Use
<picture>or a server/CDN policy when support is not uniform. - Measure delivery. Check transfer size, decode time, cache hit behavior, and real-device rendering after deployment.
Troubleshooting common rendering problems
The image downloads but does not display
Verify the response’s media type, file signature, URL, and permissions. A file named .webp with an incorrect Content-Type can fail in strict consumers. Check that an intermediary has not returned an HTML error page with a successful-looking status.
Text looks blurry or has halos
The image was probably encoded with lossy settings suited to photographs. Re-export the screenshot, diagram, or logo as PNG or lossless WebP, and avoid repeated JPEG saves.

Transparent areas appear black or white
Confirm that the chosen format and decoder support alpha, and inspect whether the export flattened transparency against a background. JPEG cannot preserve alpha.

Check the actual browser or embedded-webview version and the specific feature being used, then verify the <picture> fallback order and response media types. Do not infer support from a different browser on the same operating system.
Images appear late and the layout jumps
Include intrinsic width and height, reserve an aspect-ratio box, and avoid delaying the image needed for the initial viewport. Lazy-load images that are genuinely below the fold rather than the main content image.
Negotiation serves the wrong cached variant
Inspect cache keys and the response’s variation policy. If a CDN cache ignores the browser’s accepted media types, use distinct URLs or a CDN transformation mechanism that explicitly keys on the selected format.

Cost, performance and maintenance considerations
- Compare encoded candidates at the same perceived quality; a smaller file is not a win if users notice artifacts.
- Account for decode and encode CPU, not only transfer bytes, especially on low-power devices and high-resolution images.
- Each additional format multiplies storage, cache entries, tests, and failure paths.
- Retain originals and deterministic transformation settings so derivatives can be regenerated.
- Review browser support periodically because format support and feature details change over time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should every website switch from JPEG to AVIF?
No. AVIF can reduce size, but support, encoding cost, decoding behavior, and fallback requirements differ. Test it against your actual clients and keep a suitable fallback.
Is WebP always smaller than PNG?
No. MDN reports an average lossless WebP advantage of 26% for the compared images, but individual files vary with image content and encoder settings.
Can SVG replace PNG for screenshots?
Usually not. SVG is ideal for vector artwork; a screenshot is pixel-based and is generally better represented by PNG or a lossless modern raster format.
Why include an img element inside picture?
The img supplies the fallback source, alternative text, dimensions, and the element browsers render when no source is selected.
