IFS announced on July 10, 2024, that it had acquired EmpowerMX, a Texas-based provider of aviation maintenance software. The deal adds airframe maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) capabilities to IFS’s aerospace and defense portfolio; it is a software acquisition, not the purchase of an airline, aircraft or physical maintenance facility.
What IFS acquired
EmpowerMX specializes in software for airframe MRO: the planning and execution of maintenance, repair and overhaul work on aircraft structures. IFS said the acquisition would deepen its Industrial AI offering for aerospace and defense and bring EmpowerMX’s aviation-maintenance expertise into its portfolio. The announcement describes the technology as cloud- and mobile-first, with workflows intended for multiple users and roles. IFS’s acquisition announcement identifies Embraer, MRO Holdings, Delta Air Lines and American Airlines among organizations that trust EmpowerMX technology.
What the software is designed to do
IFS says the combined offering supports maintenance management with paperless electronic task cards and logbooks. These digital records are intended to help teams coordinate work and maintain production control across maintenance operations.
- Electronic task cards and logbooks: Digitize maintenance instructions and records rather than relying on paper workflows.
- Production control: Coordinate work and provide visibility across roles involved in an MRO operation.
- AI-oriented capabilities: IFS says EmpowerMX customers are expected to gain access to IFS’s global scale and embedded IFS.ai capabilities.
IFS presents improved efficiency, shorter maintenance turnaround times and lower maintenance costs as desired customer outcomes. Those are objectives stated by the company, not independently verified performance results from the acquisition announcement.

How the acquisition could affect airlines and MRO providers
The strategic rationale is that aircraft maintenance organizations face overlapping pressures: disrupted supply chains, shortages of labor and skills, constrained capacity, regulatory compliance obligations and ESG reporting demands. These pressures can affect the cost and duration of maintenance work. IFS is positioning the combined software to help manage complex, regulated processes while improving planning and operational control.
In reporting on the deal, CIO described IFS’s plan to add its AI capabilities to EmpowerMX aircraft-maintenance software. IDC Research Vice President Aly Pinder said the acquisition strengthens IFS’s support for complex maintenance processes in a highly regulated aviation environment. The announcement does not establish that every customer will achieve a particular turnaround-time, cost or productivity improvement.

What customer and product history is public
Customer references show that EmpowerMX technology has been used in airline and MRO contexts, but they should not be read as independent proof of current performance or as confirmation that every named organization uses every product in the portfolio.
- American Airlines and Delta Air Lines: Aviation Week reported that both were launch customers for EmpowerMX’s EMX Insights platform in 2022; it also reported MRO Holdings as a user. Aviation Week’s account describes EMX Vision, launched in 2023, as using internal and external data to forecast labor, defects, material probabilities, turnaround times and resource allocation.
- Drayton Aerospace Porto Alegre: In September 2024, the company selected EmpowerMX from IFS to plan, execute and optimize its MRO operations. Its stated objectives included predictive control of turnaround times, improved risk-factor management and better resource utilization. IFS’s customer announcement describes the selection.
- Embraer: IFS named Embraer among organizations that trust EmpowerMX technology in its July 2024 acquisition announcement.
How the deal fits IFS’s scale
Argentum reported in 2024 that IFS had more than 6,000 employees, more than 6,500 customers and a presence in over 80 countries. These figures indicate the scale IFS cited around the acquisition; they do not by themselves establish how quickly or broadly EmpowerMX software will be deployed at aviation customers. Argentum’s report gives the figures.

What the announcement does not establish
The acquisition announcement describes strategic intent and product capabilities, but it is not a like-for-like evaluation of aviation MRO platforms. It does not provide comparative benchmarks against competing vendors, customer-specific savings, implementation timelines, pricing, or detailed evidence about integrations with ERP, fleet and supply-chain systems. Organizations evaluating the software would need to assess those points for their own aircraft, maintenance scope, compliance needs and operating environment.
