What Iframely provides today
Iframely’s oEmbed endpoint accepts a URL and API key and returns JSON with an html field when an embeddable representation is available. Its documented output types are photo, video, rich and link.
The fuller Iframely endpoint returns generated HTML together with meta and links data. If a provider cannot supply rich media, Iframely can generate a summary card delivered through a hosted iframe. Its embed.js library can unfurl URLs in a browser, load links dynamically, emit events, and be self-hosted from GitHub or NPM.
Iframely reports rich-media coverage from more than 1,900 domains in its QA database (vendor-reported figure, documentation accessed September 29, 2026). That number is not an independent coverage benchmark, so test the domains your users actually submit.

The two strongest alternatives
OpenGraph.io: closest match for native embeds plus fallback cards
OpenGraph.io explicitly positions itself as an Iframely alternative for URL embeds. Its model is “native oEmbed when available,” with hosted fallback cards for other public URLs. An embed_id supports refresh and management of an embed after creation.

Choose OpenGraph.io when one integration must handle known providers and ordinary websites that have no oEmbed implementation. Before committing, confirm provider coverage for your traffic, card theming, cache and refresh behavior, rendering and proxy costs, rate limits and data-processing terms.

Embedly’s official /1/oembed endpoint follows the oEmbed standard and returns the resource type, version, title, provider information and HTML for supported embeds.
Its product line is divided into distinct services: Embed for third-party embeds, Extract for full-page content and entities, Display for image proxying and resizing, and Cards for responsive, shareable embeds. This makes Embedly a better fit when your roadmap includes content extraction or image handling in addition to URL embedding.

How to choose a replacement
1. Start with provider coverage, not the vendor’s total
Build a representative URL set: the video, social, publishing, commerce and internal domains your application receives. Test successful native embeds, ordinary article pages, redirects, private pages and URLs that have been removed. A large claimed domain count does not guarantee the providers or regional variants that matter to your product.
2. Decide what should happen when rich media fails
A resolver can return an error, raw metadata, or a vendor-hosted card. OpenGraph.io is the clearest fit when a usable fallback card is a product requirement. If you need to control every pixel, request raw metadata and render your own component instead; verify whether the service exposes the fields and media URLs you need.
3. Separate extraction from presentation
Use an embed endpoint when you need provider-generated HTML. Use an extraction product when you need title, entities or page content for your own renderer. Use image proxying when you must resize or safely serve remote images. 4. Test JavaScript-heavy pages
Single-page applications may not expose their final metadata in the first HTML response. OpenGraph.io documents optional JavaScript rendering. With any provider, test the same URL with rendering enabled and disabled, measure the added latency and verify that your plan’s limits cover the workload.
5. Define caching and refresh rules
Store the provider response and the time it was fetched. Decide which events trigger a refresh: a user request, a scheduled interval, a moderation action or an explicit publisher update. OpenGraph.io documents caching and an embed_id for refresh and management; confirm retention and invalidation semantics before designing around them.
6. Treat provider HTML as untrusted input
Sanitize or isolate returned embed HTML according to your application’s threat model. Prefer sandboxed iframes where appropriate, restrict outbound requests with a content-security policy, and avoid exposing provider API keys in browser code unless the service explicitly supports that pattern.

7. Run a controlled migration
- Log the URLs and response types your Iframely integration currently receives.
- Map each response to the candidate API’s fields and rendering path.
- Replay the URL set against the candidate while keeping Iframely as the production fallback.
- Compare native-embed success, fallback-card rate, latency, image behavior and moderation outcomes.
- Ship a feature flag, monitor errors and provider-specific failures, then move traffic in stages.

- Which providers and custom domains are supported in your target region and API version?
- What are the rate limits, burst rules, overage charges and concurrency limits?
- How long are fetched pages, metadata, images and generated cards retained?
- Can you disable JavaScript rendering, proxying or hosted cards per request?
- What happens for private, rate-limited, blocked or deleted URLs?
- Are partner-program or provider terms required for the embeds your application displays?
- Which migration tools preserve existing card URLs, refresh behavior and analytics?
