Google says folders and labels are not transferred, and the temporary forwarding included with the import lasts 30 days. Before relying on Gmail as your new address, import your data, arrange delivery of new Yahoo messages if needed, and check that the mail and contacts you expect are actually there.
Should you switch from Yahoo Mail to Gmail?
Switching makes sense if you want Gmail to become your primary inbox and are comfortable keeping your Yahoo account available during the transition. Google provides a settings-based import for older messages and contacts. It does not move Yahoo folders or labels, so expect to review how your mail is organized after import.
Do not treat the import as a permanent connection between the two inboxes. Google’s import flow forwards messages sent to the old address for 30 days after import and displays your new Gmail address for 60 days, unless you remove the reminder. For a longer transition, Yahoo’s own auto-forwarding is a separate option with availability restrictions.
What moves to Gmail—and what does not?

Import Yahoo mail and contacts into Gmail
- Sign in to the Gmail account where you want the Yahoo mail and contacts to arrive.
- In Gmail, open Settings, then See all settings.
- Open the Accounts and import tab and select Import mail and contacts.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to connect the Yahoo account and start the import. The available prompts may depend on the accounts and connection options shown to you. Google documents this route for transferring old messages and contacts. Google Gmail Help
Google’s import page describes a transfer, not a guaranteed complete copy of every item or a permanent synchronization service. Keep access to Yahoo while the import runs and while you check the results.

Choose how to handle new Yahoo messages
Use Google’s temporary post-import forwarding
After the import, Google says messages sent to the old account are forwarded for 30 days. That can help during a short transition, but it is not an indefinite forwarding setup. The Gmail flow also displays your new address for 60 days unless you remove the reminder. Google Gmail Help
Set up Yahoo automatic forwarding for a longer transition
Yahoo’s New Yahoo Mail instructions place automatic forwarding in the account’s Mailboxes settings: enter the address that should receive forwarded mail, then verify it. Yahoo currently describes the feature as requiring Yahoo Mail Plus and notes that availability varies by locale. Confirm that the option is available to your account before depending on it. Consider a linked-account option only if Gmail currently offers it
Gmail separately documents connecting another email account, including options such as POP and Gmailify for eligible accounts. Google warns that Gmailify and POP support are changing, so availability may not be stable. A linked account is not the same thing as importing old mail; check the options Gmail presents before treating it as an ongoing solution. Google also warns that linking another account can bring you to your storage limit. Google Gmail Help
Export a separate copy of Yahoo contacts
If you want a standalone contacts file as a backup or a way to check the import, export contacts from Yahoo as a CSV file. Yahoo notes that special characters can prevent contact import or export, and states a capacity of 5,000 contacts for New Yahoo Mail. The capacity is Yahoo’s stated limit, not a guarantee that every contact will export successfully. Yahoo Help

Verify the migration before relying on Gmail
- Search Gmail for names, subjects, and date ranges you know should be present; do not rely only on the inbox view.
- Open representative messages and attachments, and compare the results against Yahoo.
- Check that important contacts arrived, especially if names contain accented or other special characters.
- Look in Yahoo for messages that did not appear in Gmail. Google’s import troubleshooting guidance covers missing messages, duplicate or out-of-order delivery, connection problems, and other issues. It says messages 150 MB or larger, including attachments, cannot be imported. Google Gmail Help
Google also describes account connection as dependent on secure connections and POP access where applicable. If a connection fails or expected messages are missing, consult Google’s troubleshooting page rather than assuming the import completed fully. Google Gmail Help

Use Gmail as your new primary inbox only after checking the messages and contacts you need and deciding how long you want mail sent to your Yahoo address to keep reaching you. Keep signing in to Yahoo during that period, particularly if you have not confirmed forwarding or found every important message in Gmail. Yahoo’s guidance also says its described transfer methods do not move an entire inbox, another reason to verify rather than assume the accounts are identical. Yahoo Help
