IEEE Spectrum’s top consumer-tech stories of 2025 point to a common question: who gets to shape the technology experience? The year’s standouts ranged from a 75-hertz e-paper display and cooler smartphones to repairable computers, new camera sensing, calmer interfaces and two competing visions for AR glasses. Here is what each development does—and what it does not yet establish.

Can e-paper be fast enough for everyday computing?

Boston startup Modos built an e-paper monitor and development kit with a 75-hertz refresh rate, which IEEE Spectrum describes as fast enough for video and comparable to basic LCD screens. The article attributes that speed to an open-source display controller. Modos pre-orders were scheduled to ship in late January 2026; that schedule is not confirmation that a particular model is now available or shipping.

The advance matters because e-paper has traditionally traded motion smoothness for a display experience that can be easier on the eyes and less visually busy. At 75 Hz, the technology becomes more plausible for moving images and interactive computing, rather than only static pages. It does not, by itself, establish that the monitor matches LCDs in color, brightness, contrast, price or suitability for every workload.

How do vapor chambers cool an iPhone?

Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, released in September 2025, use thin water chambers to dissipate heat through evaporation. In a vapor chamber, heat turns liquid into vapor; the vapor spreads through the chamber and releases heat as it condenses, helping move warmth away from a concentrated hot spot. The roundup notes that Samsung and Google had already used the same broad cooling technique in high-end smartphones.

This is a thermal-management change, not a guarantee that a phone will never heat up or throttle performance. The reported design explains how heat is spread and carried away; the roundup does not provide comparative temperature, sustained-performance or battery-life measurements.

What does a RISC-V laptop mean for open, repairable computing?

Framework, known for repairable computers, released a laptop mainboard supporting RISC-V, an open-source instruction-set architecture. That gives early adopters a way to explore a different foundation for a laptop than the proprietary architectures common in mainstream consumer machines. It does not mean that every application or operating system will automatically work as it does on a conventional laptop.

Framework later introduced a swappable graphics module, with a choice between the original AMD GPU or Nvidia’s RTX 5070. Together, the mainboard and graphics options illustrate a modular approach: users can replace or change components rather than treating the computer as a fixed configuration. The practical trade-off is that openness and repairability can offer flexibility, while compatibility and the maturity of a newer platform remain important considerations.

Can a smartphone camera see beyond visible light?

Purdue University researchers used a color chart placed in the camera frame to recover hyperspectral information from an ordinary smartphone camera. Hyperspectral sensing captures information across many wavelength bands, potentially revealing material differences that an ordinary color image does not show.

IEEE Spectrum names possible applications including identifying chemicals for medical diagnostics and analyzing pigments in artwork. These are potential uses, not demonstrated consumer features or proven diagnostic results. The roundup gives no performance statistic for the method, so it does not establish accuracy, clinical readiness, or how reliably the approach works across phones and real-world conditions.

Will tariffs raise electronics prices?

IEEE Spectrum connects U.S. tariff changes in 2025 with the risk of higher electronics prices and supply-chain shifts. The article reports that the United States announced a universal 10 percent tariff on imports in April 2025 and a 125 percent tariff on Chinese goods, later reduced to a 10 percent baseline. Those are figures from the roundup’s account of the policy changes, not an independently measured increase in the price of a particular product.

Tariffs can affect electronics through the cost of imported finished goods or components, and businesses may respond by changing suppliers, production locations or prices. The roundup highlights potential pressure on hobbyists and students who source components internationally. It does not establish how much any buyer paid as a result, or whether a particular product’s price changed because of tariffs.

What is calm technology?

Calm technology is designed to demand less primary attention: it defaults to necessary notifications and favors naturalistic design instead of repeatedly pulling users toward a screen. At CES 2025, the Calm Tech Institute issued a new certification for devices designed around that principle. Examples in the roundup included an e-ink tablet and a woodlike smart-home interface.

The certification signals a design aim rather than proof that every certified device will reduce distraction for every person. Its central idea is to make technology available when useful without making it the focus of attention by default.

Should AR glasses replace screens or work like a smartwatch?

IEEE Spectrum frames the question as what users actually want from head-worn displays. The two approaches differ in how much information they put in front of the wearer:

Design approach What it emphasizes Example named by IEEE Spectrum
Screen replacement Replicating the computer screens people currently use Xreal
Glanceable information Showing limited information at a time, more like a smartwatch Halliday

A screen-replacement model prioritizes breadth: it aims to make a larger display experience available through glasses. A glanceable model prioritizes restraint, surfacing smaller amounts of information when needed. The roundup presents these as competing design visions, not as a user-tested verdict about which is better. The right fit depends on whether someone wants a wearable workspace or quick, limited information without a full virtual screen.
