Choose an iCloud Mail alias for a small number of stable, recognizable @icloud.com addresses attached to your iCloud Mail account. Choose Hide My Email for random addresses tied to signups or other supported uses that forward to your personal email and can later be deactivated. Hide My Email requires iCloud+ or qualifying Family Sharing access; aliases require a primary iCloud Mail address.
What’s the difference between an iCloud email alias and Hide My Email?
An iCloud Mail alias is another address for the same iCloud Mail account, not a separate mailbox or Apple Account. You choose the alias text, and incoming messages normally arrive in the primary inbox. Apple lets standard accounts create up to three @icloud.com aliases. Apple explains iCloud Mail aliases.
Hide My Email generates a random address instead of letting you choose its text. You can associate it with a particular signup or use, label it, and have its messages forwarded to an email address associated with your Apple Account. You can later deactivate or delete it. Apple describes it as an iCloud+ feature, also available through qualifying iCloud+ Family Sharing access. Apple’s Hide My Email guide covers the feature and supported contexts.
| What matters | iCloud Mail alias | Hide My Email |
|---|---|---|
| Address | You choose the text; it ends in @icloud.com. |
Apple generates a random address; you can add a label and note. |
| Access | Requires a primary iCloud Mail address. | Requires iCloud+ or qualifying iCloud+ Family Sharing access. |
| Quantity and lifecycle | Up to three standard aliases. They cannot be changed, transferred, or made primary; replacing one after reaching the limit requires a seven-day wait after deletion. | Apple says you can create as many as needed, then deactivate or delete addresses you no longer use. |
| Incoming mail | Goes to the primary inbox by default. | Forwards to the selected personal email address associated with your Apple Account. |
| Sending | iCloud Mail supports sending from an alias. | Apple documents sending and replying while keeping your personal address private; sending from Hide My Email in Mail is limited to one recipient at a time. |
Which one should you use?
Choose an alias for a stable, recognizable address
An alias fits a few ongoing roles where you want an address you recognize—for example, one for personal correspondence and another for a different purpose within iCloud Mail. You choose its text, and it stays attached to your account. It is not a separate mailbox, and Apple says it cannot be used to create a separate Apple Account.

Choose Hide My Email for separate signups and forms
Use Hide My Email when you would rather not give a service your personal email address, or want a different address for each signup or supported context. Since the addresses are individually manageable, you can deactivate one if you no longer want it forwarding mail. The feature masks your address; Apple’s documentation does not establish that it makes you anonymous or prevents other kinds of tracking.
Can I use Hide My Email without iCloud+?
Hide My Email is available with iCloud+ and through qualifying iCloud+ Family Sharing access. An iCloud Mail alias does not require iCloud+ as a separate feature, but it does require a primary iCloud Mail address. Apple’s feature documentation lists iOS 15, iPadOS 15, or macOS 12 as minimums for the documented Hide My Email feature set; particular uses can require newer software. For instance, Apple documents Hide My Email with Apple Pay on iOS or iPadOS 17 or later. Apple’s setup guide describes availability across devices.

How many iCloud email aliases can I have?
For a standard iCloud Mail account, Apple allows up to three aliases. You provide the address text when creating one; Apple specifies 3–20 characters. Aliases cannot be renamed, transferred to another account, or converted into a primary account. If you have three and delete one, Apple requires a seven-day wait before you can create a replacement. Deletion is permanent; a legacy MobileMe account follows a separate rule. Apple’s iCloud.com alias instructions explain creation and management.
You can temporarily turn an alias off or delete it. When an alias is disabled or deleted, messages sent to it are returned to the sender. Consider disabling it before permanent deletion if you are unsure whether you still need it; disabling does not make incoming messages disappear silently for senders.
