The announcement also emphasized connecting agents with tools and automations, coordinating multi-agent workflows, and monitoring agent activity. IBM separately said its new Agent Catalog included more than 150 agents and pre-built tools; that was a figure for the 2025 announcement, not a current catalog count.
What IBM announced in May 2025
The update, announced around IBM Think and covered by InfoWorld on May 6, 2025, expanded watsonx Orchestrate’s role from coordinating work to also helping organizations create and manage AI agents. InfoWorld described the additions as agent-building and observability capabilities. IBM’s own announcement highlighted a new Agent Catalog and its partner ecosystem.
These were product descriptions at announcement time, not independent confirmation that every capability was generally available to every customer on May 6. IBM’s announcement is available at IBM’s May 6, 2025 Think announcement; InfoWorld’s report is at InfoWorld’s coverage.
Two routes for creating agents
Agent Builder for visual, no-code configuration
InfoWorld described Agent Builder as a no-code studio with drag-and-drop tools. This path is intended for configuring agents visually rather than writing a specialized implementation from scratch. The available reporting does not independently establish how easy it is to use or what level of technical expertise particular workflows require.

Agent Development Kit for developers
For professional developers, IBM added an Agent Development Kit aimed at building more specialized agents. The report also described bringing external tools and automations into custom agents. In practice, these two routes address different needs: visual configuration for assembling agent behavior, and a developer toolkit where more customization is required. The announcement does not provide a controlled comparison of their capabilities or performance.
How agents fit into Orchestrate
The update positioned agents within a broader workflow and orchestration environment. An organization could connect agents to tools and automations, coordinate work across multiple agents, and monitor activity. That makes the central operational question larger than how an individual agent is authored: teams also need to decide how agents interact, what systems they can access, and how their use is inspected and governed.

IBM’s May 2025 announcement named Box, Mastercard, Oracle, Salesforce, and ServiceNow among ecosystem partners. It said the Agent Catalog contained more than 150 agents and pre-built tools. Treat that number as IBM’s historical 2025 announcement figure, not as a current inventory; catalog contents can change.
What later releases add—and why dates matter
IBM continued expanding the product after the 2025 announcement. These later details are subsequent context, not features to attribute to the May 2025 update.

August 2026 availability announcements
In an announcement published September 3, 2026, IBM said AI Gateway discovery and registration for Amazon Bedrock agents, Trace Inspector, Custom LLM-as-a-Judge, and the AgentOps agent had reached general availability on specified dates in August. IBM said integrations for Azure AI Foundry and Google Vertex AI would follow at the end of September 2026. Availability therefore depends on the feature and platform; consult IBM’s August 2026 release announcement and current product documentation before relying on a particular integration.
Build with Bob and other community-reported updates
An IBM Community post dated August 28, 2026 described Build with Bob as a preview on IBM Cloud and AWS. It said users could create or update agents, tools, and workflows using natural language from within Orchestrate. The post also recapped an August builder redesign, multiple knowledge sources per agent, JWT service-account and custom API-key-header authentication, knowledge-specific evaluation metrics, LangGraph agents in the catalog, and Excel support for document extraction. These are dated vendor-community descriptions; confirm the status and deployment requirements of any specific capability in current documentation. The post’s wording about whether production agents attract many one-time users or a small group of frequent users is a prompt for product teams, not survey evidence about customer behavior. How to evaluate the platform for your organization
The announcements describe a range of capabilities, but they do not establish comparative price, reliability, ease of use, or performance. A practical evaluation should therefore test fit against the organization’s actual workflows rather than treating feature lists as proof of outcomes.
- Builder fit: Determine whether the people creating agents need visual authoring, developer-level customization, or both.
- Integration fit: Verify that the agents, tools, automations, and external systems you rely on are supported in your intended deployment.
- Governance and observability: Establish what your team needs to inspect, evaluate, and control, and verify which capabilities are available for your environment.
- Deployment and availability: Confirm the region, cloud platform, release status, and required dates for each feature; a preview or announced future integration is not the same as generally available functionality.
- Cost and performance: Obtain current pricing and evaluate performance against your own workload. The cited announcements do not provide an apples-to-apples price or performance comparison.
IBM’s current service listing describes watsonx Orchestrate at IBM’s product page. Use current IBM documentation and commercial terms for decisions because the May 2025 announcement and later release notes are dated snapshots.
