In a June 20, 2013 column, Robert X. Cringely argued that IBM’s layoffs and cost cutting risked weakening customer service and trust. His memorable “staining my window” title framed a criticism of how the company’s drive to meet financial targets could damage customer relationships. The piece is commentary, not an independent audit of IBM’s service or employment claims.

What does “your hand is staining my window” mean?

The phrase is a metaphor for damaging a relationship while trying to present a clean or reassuring image. Cringely used it to suggest that IBM’s efforts to control costs were leaving marks on its customer relationships: customers, he said, were complaining about service even as the company promoted a customer-experience initiative.

That interpretation belongs to Cringely’s argument. The column does not independently establish how widespread the complaints were or measure IBM’s service quality.

What was Cringely’s argument about IBM’s service?

Cringely connected workforce reductions and cost cutting with the risk of weaker service. He also characterized IBM’s customer-experience effort as marketing that was not matched by enough operational change. His criticism was that messaging and exhortations alone would not fix customer problems. As he put it, “But telling and yelling are not the best path — or even a path at all — to a better customer experience.”

The article reports Cringely’s view; it does not demonstrate that layoffs caused a particular service failure or establish IBM’s internal reasons for its actions.

How many IBM employees were reportedly affected?

Cringely said he could not verify the number of layoffs. He reported estimates he had heard ranging from 3,000 to 8,000, while acknowledging that the actual count was unknown to him. That range should be read as unconfirmed estimates in a 2013 opinion column, not as a verified IBM layoff total.

What did the column say about IBM’s financial targets?

Cringely treated IBM’s plan for 2015 earnings as a force shaping management behavior and predicted that pursuing the target through cost reduction could have negative consequences for customers. Those were his analysis and forecast in 2013—not evidence that the prediction came true.

The column also stated that Global Technology Services represented 38.5 percent of IBM revenue and 29.4 percent of profit, attributing those figures to financial numbers he consulted through Yahoo Finance. They are historical figures as reported by Cringely; the underlying IBM filing has not been independently verified here.

How should readers assess the column today?

Read it as a dated argument about the tension between cost control and customer service, rather than as a current account of IBM. Its central question—whether reductions in a service organization can undermine the experience a company promises—is relevant beyond IBM, but the column alone cannot establish the scale of IBM’s customer complaints, the confirmed number of affected employees, or the present state of the company’s service.

Read Robert X. Cringely’s original June 20, 2013 column for the full argument and its contemporary context.
