Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallBefore replacing a TV, identify what looks wrong: a consistently dim picture, brightness that shifts on its own, or motion that looks unnaturally smooth. Each symptom can point to a picture setting worth checking—but no setting change can prove that the TV’s hardware is healthy.
Start with the symptom you see
| What you notice | Settings worth checking | What they do |
|---|---|---|
| Films look unnaturally smooth | Motion smoothing or motion interpolation | Creates or adjusts motion to make movement appear smoother. |
| The picture is consistently dim | Energy-saving settings and picture mode | May reduce brightness or select a picture preset that looks darker in your room. |
| Brightness changes without you adjusting it | Ambient-light sensor, brightness optimization, adaptive picture, or energy-saving features | Automatically adjusts the image in response to room lighting or power-saving behavior. |
Names and availability vary by brand, model, software version, and sometimes input. Treat the terms below as settings to search for—not a universal menu path.
If movies look too smooth, check motion controls
Motion interpolation can make film movement look unusually fluid, often described as the “soap-opera” effect. Look for a motion setting named Motion Smoothing, Action Smoothing, Motionflow, Picture Clarity, or something similar.
Roku’s guidance for supported Roku TV models is to set Action Smoothing to Off or Low when watching movies. Roku notes that motion options vary across third-party Roku TV models, so the control may not be available or named the same way on every set. See Roku’s motion-smoothing guidance.

If the picture is too dim, check energy saving and picture mode
LG USA Support says that, for the models covered by its guidance, a dark or dim picture is usually associated with Energy Saving being on or Picture Mode not being set correctly. LG recommends turning Energy Saving Step Off and trying Standard picture mode; resetting the picture is another troubleshooting step. These are LG’s model-specific suggestions, not a diagnosis for every TV. See LG’s dark-picture troubleshooting guide.

On your TV, search picture settings for Eco, Energy Saving, or a similarly named option, then check the current picture mode. LG notes that picture settings can differ by input mode, so a change that helps one source may not carry over to another. If you reset picture settings, be aware that this can undo adjustments you made to the current mode.

A TV may intentionally change brightness to respond to room lighting or save power. Check for controls such as Ambient Light Sensor, Brightness Optimization, Auto Picture Mode, adaptive brightness, or related energy-saving options. Availability and behavior depend on the model.

What to do if a setting change does not help
- Change one relevant setting at a time. Use familiar content and the same input to judge whether the picture improves.
- Check the source and connection. Try another input or source if available, and make sure external connections are secure. A dim picture can have causes beyond settings; LG lists loose external connections and possible hardware issues among other possibilities.
- Restore the picture mode or reset picture settings if needed. Use the TV’s model-specific instructions, especially if you are unsure which adjustments changed.
- Use the manufacturer’s support instructions for your exact model. If the symptom persists after settings and connection checks, follow the official troubleshooting guidance or seek service rather than assuming a setting is the cause.
