If your main reason for using Waze is its driver-focused camera and road-hazard alerts, switching back can make sense—especially if those warnings are more useful on your regular routes. But Google Maps is not without incident alerts, and Waze camera alerts are not guaranteed everywhere. The difference to test is how clearly and consistently each app surfaces the alerts you care about where you drive.
What is the feature that brings drivers back to Waze?
It is Waze’s road and camera alerts: warnings about incidents and hazards that can draw on driver reports, map-editor contributions, partner information, and other sources. That emphasis on reports tied to the road ahead can make Waze feel more like a driving companion than a general-purpose map.
Google Maps also supports incident reporting and alerts. Google describes incident reports in both Maps and Waze, and says Waze camera alerts use community contributions, real-world road information, and publicly available authority data. So the distinction is not that one app has alerts and the other has none; it is how each presents the alerts and what coverage is available on your routes. What changed with Waze camera alerts in Google Maps?
On June 7, 2026, Waze announced it was beginning to surface Waze-sourced permanent speed-camera alerts in Google Maps. The announcement’s wording is deliberately limited: “Starting Today: We are starting with surfacing Waze-sourced Permanent Speed Cameras alerts.” This is a rollout of a named alert type, not confirmation that every driver has it or that every Waze report category is shared. That means the feature gap may be narrowing, but the rollout does not establish identical camera coverage or alert behavior in the two apps. Availability can depend on location and rollout status, so check the version of Maps you use rather than assuming the alert is present.
How Waze alerts work—and their limits
Adjust the alerts you see
Waze lets drivers customize alert display, and its preferences can vary by alert type. If a warning is missing or distracting, review the alert settings in the app and confirm that the specific type is enabled. Waze’s alert help page describes the available preferences.

Camera coverage is not guaranteed
Waze says it may not know about a camera that has not been reported by an editor or partner. Treat camera alerts as helpful warnings, not a complete inventory or a promise that every camera will trigger an alert. Waze’s camera help page explains this limitation.
Some alerts come from partners
Waze also receives partner feeds for real-time traffic alerts, moving vehicles, and road closures. Those feeds are distinct from an individual driver submitting a report, so not every alert should be understood as a live user report. Waze’s developer documentation describes these partner data feeds.

How to decide which app works better on your routes
There is no geography-specific controlled comparison establishing that one app is universally faster, more accurate, or more comprehensive. Compare the two on the roads you actually drive, and focus on whether alerts are actionable rather than on a blanket claim that one app is best.
- Use the same familiar routes. Compare your regular commute or recurring trips, since local reporting and camera coverage can vary.
- Check the alert types. Note which camera, hazard, and incident warnings each app shows. Do not assume a feature available in one region or rollout is available everywhere.
- Notice how alerts reach you. Check whether each warning is visible, audible, or easy to miss while following navigation.
- Compare traffic and rerouting. Pay attention to how each app handles congestion and whether its directions remain useful when conditions change.
- Choose the interface you can use comfortably. A theoretically useful alert is less useful if the display or notification style is confusing while driving.
Make comparisons while parked or have a passenger observe the apps; do not handle a phone while driving. If Waze consistently gives you clearer, more relevant alerts on your routes, it is a reasonable choice for navigation. If Maps provides the same warnings you need and its interface suits you better, the Waze camera-alert rollout may reduce one reason to switch.
