The more direct alternative is to send the error text and relevant project context to a local model through a terminal agent. The model does not see your terminal by itself: a runtime supplies the model, and an interface or agent passes it the text or tools it needs.
What changed when I stopped screenshotting errors?
A screenshot preserves how an error looked, but it is awkward to search, quote, or connect to nearby command output and project files. A terminal workflow can instead give an assistant the error as text, plus selected context such as the command that produced it or the relevant source file. That makes it easier to ask a focused question where the debugging is already happening.
This is a workflow pattern, not a claim that a model automatically watches the terminal or that it will correctly diagnose or fix every problem. The exact model, operating system, terminal, runtime, and setup behind the title are not specified here; the steps below describe a documented way to assemble the pattern using Open Interpreter.
How does a local model get terminal output?
A local model is the model itself; it does not inherently have access to terminal text, files, or commands. A local inference service such as Ollama or LM Studio hosts the model. A terminal interface or agent then connects to that service and supplies the prompt, relevant output, and—if enabled—tools such as repository inspection or command execution. Open Interpreter documents connections to both local providers and describes agent workflows that can inspect repositories, run commands, edit files, review diffs, and resume sessions (Open Interpreter: Ollama and local models; Open Interpreter documentation).

The useful distinction is between asking about pasted output and granting an agent tools. In the first case, the model can reason only from what you provide. In the second, the interface may be able to gather context or act on the project, subject to its configuration and permissions.
How do I use a local LLM in my terminal?
Open Interpreter’s documented quickstart follows a practical sequence: install the CLI, open the project you want to work on, choose a provider, then give a concrete request. Check the current documentation for installation details and supported options, because commands and provider behavior can change (Open Interpreter quickstart and documentation).
Connect Open Interpreter to Ollama
- Install and start Ollama, then make sure the model you intend to use is available through its service.
- Open a terminal in the project directory and launch Open Interpreter with
interpreter --oss --local-provider ollama. - Give it a bounded request, such as:
Explain this error using the command output I provide. Identify the most likely cause and suggest one diagnostic step. Do not edit files or run commands. Then paste the error and the relevant command or surrounding output.
Open Interpreter documents Ollama’s default API endpoint as http://localhost:11434/v1. Confirm the current endpoint and provider instructions in its local-model guide before relying on them. The CLI option can also be configured for a remote host, so “using Ollama” does not necessarily mean the inference service is on the same machine.

Connect Open Interpreter to LM Studio
- Start LM Studio’s local service and load a compatible model.
- From the project directory, launch Open Interpreter with
interpreter --oss --local-provider lm_studio. - Provide the error text and a specific request. Start with explanation or diagnosis; allow file edits or commands only when you have decided they are appropriate.
Open Interpreter documents LM Studio’s default API endpoint as http://localhost:1234/v1. Verify the current endpoint, model compatibility, and launch instructions in the Open Interpreter local-model guide.
These are documented launch patterns, not a tested head-to-head comparison. Neither provider is established here as universally better. Check whether the model and endpoint are compatible with the terminal interface, whether the context window is large enough, and whether the interface handles tool calls as expected.
What should I include when asking about an error?
Give the assistant enough information to reason without dumping unrelated secrets or an entire repository. A useful diagnostic request can include:

- Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring
- The exact error text, copied as text rather than only as an image.
- The command or action that produced it, with relevant output immediately before the error.
- The relevant file, function, configuration, or recent change when the problem appears project-specific.
- What you expected to happen and what happened instead.
- A clear boundary: explain only, suggest a diagnostic command, or propose a change for review.
For example: “This command fails with the output below. Based only on this output and the named configuration file, explain the likely cause. Do not run commands or change files; suggest the next check and explain what result would confirm it.” That request separates diagnosis from action and makes it easier to check whether the suggestion follows from the evidence.
Why can a terminal agent fail even when the model replies?
Tool-using agents send more than your question to a model: prompts may include instructions and tool schemas describing available actions. Open Interpreter warns that if the server truncates the beginning of this context, the model may guess, print what looks like a tool call as ordinary text, or ask you to run a command instead of invoking a tool (Open Interpreter local-model guidance).
So a plausible-looking reply is not evidence that a command ran, a file was inspected, or a fix was applied. Check the actual command result, inspect the expected file or diff, and confirm the original error no longer occurs. If tool behavior is inconsistent, reduce the request and supplied context, verify the model’s configured context window, and check the interface’s tool-call handling.

Ollama’s January 23, 2026 announcement for ollama launch recommended at least 64,000 tokens of context for coding tools. That is Ollama’s recommendation in that dated announcement, not a universal minimum or a guarantee that a particular model, runtime, or agent will work well at that setting (Ollama: ollama launch).
How should I limit what the terminal agent can do?
Diagnosis does not require unrestricted command execution. Open Interpreter documents read-only, workspace-write, and danger-full-access sandbox choices, along with approval policies. Choose the narrowest setting that fits the task, and review proposed actions and file changes. Its --yolo option bypasses safeguards and is explicitly labeled dangerous; it is not a sensible default for troubleshooting (Open Interpreter CLI documentation).
OpenAI’s local-shell guidance likewise recommends sandboxing, resource limits, scrutiny of high-risk commands, and logs (OpenAI: Local shell tool). A local inference endpoint alone does not establish that every part of an application, extension, telemetry path, or network connection stays local. Treat locality as a property to verify across the whole setup, not a blanket privacy guarantee.

What if the local model or runtime is not working?
First distinguish a model-answer problem from a service or hardware problem. Confirm that the local service is running, that the terminal agent points to the intended endpoint, and that the selected model is available to that service. If the service cannot start or does not detect expected hardware, consult the runtime’s current official troubleshooting material and logs. Ollama’s troubleshooting guidance discusses GPU discovery, driver and container configuration, and device permissions; use the instructions that match your operating system and installation (Ollama troubleshooting).
Avoid applying platform-specific commands from a guide for a different operating system or runtime configuration. If the service works but tool calls fail, investigate context truncation and tool-call compatibility separately from GPU or driver setup.
