Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsI no longer assume every anti-cheat game has to run on my Linux machine. Instead, I can run a game on a separate PC and stream it to a Linux device with Steam Remote Play. That changes where the game executes; it does not make a game that Proton cannot run compatible with Proton.
This is a practical alternative to dual-booting when you have a suitable host PC and a reliable network. It is not a claim that every anti-cheat game works this way, or that streaming will feel as responsive as playing locally.
Why I stopped treating Linux compatibility as an all-or-nothing problem
Anti-cheat support on Linux depends on the game and its configuration. Valve says Proton supports some common anti-cheat middleware, including Easy Anti-Cheat and BattlEye, but developers must enable support for their games. Valve also says kernel-space anti-cheat solutions are not currently supported. So “uses anti-cheat” is not enough information to determine whether a specific game will run.
Valve’s Steamworks Proton documentation describes that conditional support. Check a game individually rather than assuming that all anti-cheat titles are blocked—or that support for a middleware product guarantees compatibility in every game.

What Steam Remote Play changes
With Remote Play, the host PC runs the game and sends its audio and video to a separate client device; the client sends controls back. Valve describes streaming games from a home PC directly to Steam Deck. The Deck runs SteamOS, a Linux-based system, and uses Proton to run Windows games locally, but for a streamed session the game is running on the host PC.
That distinction is the point of this setup: if a game’s anti-cheat prevents it from running under Proton on the Linux client, streaming does not fix Proton compatibility. Instead, the game runs on a separate host that can run it, while the Linux device acts as the screen and controller endpoint. Valve’s Steam Deck software page documents this host-to-Deck streaming use. A Steam Deck is one possible client, not a requirement.

Remote Play versus running the game locally
| Consideration | Local Linux and Proton | Steam Remote Play |
|---|---|---|
| Where the game executes | On the Linux device, using Proton for Windows games. | On a separate host PC; the Linux device receives the stream. |
| Anti-cheat compatibility | Depends on the game, its anti-cheat middleware, and developer configuration. | The host must be able to run the game. Streaming does not make an unsupported Proton setup compatible on the client. |
| Network dependence | Not needed for local rendering, apart from any online requirements imposed by the game. | Requires a working network connection between host and client. |
| Responsiveness | Depends on the local device and game. | Depends on the network and streaming setup; the cited official guidance does not establish latency or quality for a particular setup. |
| Equipment | A Linux device capable of running the game. | A host PC capable of running the game and a separate client device. A Steam Deck is an option, not a prerequisite. |
How to decide whether this is a good fit
- Check the individual game first. Valve’s Deck Verified criteria consider middleware, including anti-cheat, and ratings can change as games and reviews are updated. Look up the current status and the publisher’s current support information for the specific title.
- Use local play when it works well for you. A compatible game can run directly on Linux without relying on a host-to-client stream.
- Consider Remote Play when you have a capable host. This avoids making Proton on the receiving Linux device responsible for running the game, but it adds network dependence.
- Do not treat streaming as a policy workaround guarantee. The official Remote Play material explains how streaming works; it does not settle publisher-specific rules or confirm behavior for every game. Check the game publisher’s guidance if you are unsure.
Valve explains its game-rating criteria on the Steam Deck Verified page. Ubuntu’s Steam guidance likewise recommends checking individual game compatibility because functionality varies among unsupported titles: Steam on Ubuntu.
Set up the host-and-client workflow
- Choose the host PC. Install and launch Steam on the separate PC that will run the game. Confirm that this host can run the title under its own operating system and configuration; Remote Play does not solve a problem that prevents the host from launching it.
- Choose the client. Use a Linux device with Steam, such as a Steam Deck, or another supported device. Sign in to Steam on both machines and connect them over a network.
- Start the stream from the client. Find the game in the client’s Steam library and select the streaming or play option for the host PC. The game runs on the host while the client displays the stream and passes back input.
- Check the session before relying on it. Verify that the host is available, the game launches on that PC, and the client receives video and input. Network quality and device configuration affect the experience; no universal latency or image-quality result applies.

Troubleshoot connection and controller issues
The client cannot connect to the host
Remote Play needs network connectivity between the machines. Steam’s FAQ lists UDP ports 27031 and 27036 and TCP ports 27036 and 27037 for streaming. If a firewall or network configuration blocks the connection, check those requirements in Steam’s FAQ rather than opening ports indiscriminately. The FAQ is the relevant reference for the exact setup and troubleshooting guidance.
A Linux host does not pass controller input correctly
If the host itself runs Linux, Steam’s FAQ says Steam needs read/write access to /dev/uinput or /dev/input/uinput for controller emulation. Check the permissions and setup described in the Steam Remote Play FAQ.

Rumble is missing on a Linux machine
Steam’s FAQ notes that Linux machines currently lack rumble support. This is a Linux-specific limitation in the cited guidance, not evidence that the game itself or the stream has failed.

Remote Play gives me another option besides trying to make every game run locally or maintaining a Windows dual-boot solely for titles that do not work on my Linux setup. It still requires a host PC that can run the game, a client device, and a functioning network. Whether it is preferable to local play depends on the specific title and how the stream performs on your own connection; the cited sources do not establish results for a particular game or setup.
