A phone can run some language-model inference on-device, but whether that is useful depends on your phone, model, app, and task. I can’t honestly say these five tasks proved it on a particular phone: no device test or measured results are established here. Instead, this guide gives you five concrete experiments—and a fair way to judge the results on your own device.
What “local LLM” means on a phone
With local inference, the model processes your prompt on the phone rather than sending it to a cloud model for inference. That does not necessarily mean setup is offline: downloading a model may require an internet connection. Nor does an app’s “local AI” label guarantee that every feature stays on-device. An app may offer optional cloud features or connect to another computer on your network.
Check the specific feature and execution mode you are using. For a meaningful offline check, download the model first, then disconnect the phone from the internet and try the same task. Note whether the feature still works; do not assume that one successful offline function proves the whole app is offline.
Five useful tasks to try
These are bounded experiments, not guaranteed capabilities. Use the same model and settings where possible, keep the inputs short, and check every output against the source material.

1. Summarize a short itinerary
Paste in a compact trip plan and ask for an overall summary, preparation tips, and a few short phrases you might need. This tests whether the model can identify the main points and follow several simple instructions without needing a long conversation.
Check that dates, locations, and commitments match the itinerary. A fluent summary that changes a time or drops an important detail is not a useful result.
2. Rewrite a paragraph
Give the model a paragraph and ask it to make the wording clearer, shorter, or more formal while preserving the meaning. This is a practical test of a common language task and makes it easy to compare the output with the original.

Look for altered facts, missing qualifications, or a change in tone you did not request. Keep a copy of the original so you can spot subtle edits.
3. Generate or explain a small code snippet
Ask for a short, self-contained example in a language you can inspect, or provide a small snippet and ask what it does. Keep the request narrow: for example, one function with a clearly stated input and output.
Read and, where appropriate, run the result before relying on it. A locally generated answer is not automatically correct or secure, and a phone experiment is not a substitute for testing code in its intended environment.

4. Ask a question about a photo
If your app and model support image input, select a photo and ask a question about visible details. This tests more than text generation: the chosen feature must accept images and the model must interpret them.
Check the answer against the image, especially for small text, ambiguous objects, or details that matter. If the app does not offer image input, record that as a capability limit rather than treating it as a failed text test.
5. Extract fields from a receipt
With an image-capable setup, ask the model to identify a receipt title, amount, and expense category. Structured output can make this easier to review, but extraction is still fallible: verify each field against the receipt before using it.

Keep sensitive receipts out of an experiment unless you understand where the app processes the image and what its privacy settings allow.
How to run a fair phone test
- Record your setup. Write down the phone model, operating-system version, app or runtime, model name and format, and whether the model runs on the phone or uses another service.
- Download and prepare the model. Model files may be too large to include in an app installation, so setup can require a separate download. Allow enough storage and complete any model initialization before comparing tasks.
- Use fixed prompts and inputs. Save the exact prompt and use the same text or image each time. If you revise a prompt, record the change; otherwise, prompt differences can make results misleading.
- Check quality, not just fluency. Compare summaries and extracted fields to their sources, check rewrites for meaning changes, inspect code, and verify image answers visually.
- Observe practical behavior. Note response time, whether the app remains usable, and any battery or heat effects you actually observe. These depend on the phone, model, runtime, input, and conditions; one person’s result is not a general benchmark.
- Test offline separately. After the model download, disconnect from Wi-Fi and cellular data, then repeat each task. Record which functions still work and whether the app attempts to use a network route.
What Android setup can involve
Google’s Android LLM Inference guide illustrates one developer workflow: add the tasks-genai dependency, download Gemma 3 1B in 4-bit quantized format, place the model on the device, initialize the inference task, and generate or stream a response. The guide says this model is too large to bundle in an APK. It cites Pixel 8 and Samsung S23 or later as examples of high-end devices for which the API is optimized, and warns that emulators are not reliably supported. These details describe that API and example, not universal requirements for every app or model.
The same guide marks the MediaPipe LLM Inference API as maintenance-only and recommends migrating Android projects to LiteRT-LM. Its quickstart can still illustrate the workflow, but should not be mistaken for Google’s current recommendation for new Android projects. Google’s Android Developers Blog also describes product-style examples including summarizing an itinerary, organizing receipt expenses, and capturing voice notes; these are documented development use cases, not guarantees of consumer-model accuracy.

What an Apple setup can involve
Apple’s 2026 developer material describes on-device options including the System Language Model, Core AI for local models, and MLX model support. Foundation Models framework use by itself does not establish that inference is local: Apple also describes cloud-model providers working with that framework. Identify the model and execution mode in the app you use rather than inferring locality from the framework name.
A non-official iOS example repository describes an app using llama.cpp that works offline after model download, while optional Ollama support connects the phone to a Mac on the same Wi-Fi. That illustrates why “offline after setup” and “runs entirely on the phone” are separate claims: a feature may be networked to another computer even without a cloud service.
How to decide whether it is worth keeping
Judge each task separately. A local model may be worthwhile for quick, private-feeling drafting or summarization even if it struggles with images or code. Your decision should rest on observed accuracy, responsiveness, setup friction, offline behavior, and whether the feature fits your privacy needs—not on the word “local” alone.
Google’s Android Developers Blog reports that prompt iteration reduced an example response time from 13 seconds to under 2 seconds. That is one developer’s result with a particular setup and prompt, not a phone-wide benchmark or a prediction for these five experiments. The same 2026 blog says Gemini Nano was running on over 140 million devices at publication; that installed-device figure does not mean those users configured or tested the tasks above.
