It provides file syncing, web access, sharing, desktop and mobile clients, and collaboration features. But “free” can mean free software, free hosted storage, or no ongoing cost after buying your own hardware—and those are different things. Nextcloud’s software can be self-hosted, or you can use a provider; hosting, storage, and administration may still cost money.
Which OneDrive alternative fits what you actually do?
Choose based on whether you need a central cloud you can open in a browser or only need folders kept in sync among devices. Nextcloud is the broadest fit in this group for a personal cloud with web access, sharing, and collaboration. Syncthing is better understood as device-to-device folder synchronization, not a hosted OneDrive-style account.
| Option | Best match | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Nextcloud Files | A personal or team cloud with web, desktop, and mobile access, file sharing, and collaboration. | Self-host it or use a provider. Self-hosting means you operate the server. Nextcloud’s documentation notes that Android two-way sync is not fully implemented. |
| ownCloud Community | Self-managed file syncing and sharing. | ownCloud describes Community as free, self-managed software. Enterprise subscriptions and hosted ownCloud.online packages are separate offerings. |
| Seafile | Another file-sync and sharing project to investigate. | Current plan limits and terms are not established here; check the official pricing page before choosing a tier. |
| Syncthing | Continuous folder synchronization among your computers or trusted devices. | It has no central server or hosted file portal comparable to OneDrive’s browser-based experience. |
For product details, see the Nextcloud Files overview, the ownCloud pricing page, the Seafile pricing page, and the Syncthing project site.
What “free” means for Nextcloud
Self-hosted software is not the same as free storage
With a self-hosted Nextcloud installation, you provide the server and storage and handle configuration, updates, maintenance, and recovery. The software may be free, but suitable hardware or hosting takes resources, and someone must keep the service working.

Nextcloud’s version 36 administrator manual lists supported operating systems and server components, including databases, web servers, and PHP versions. Its memory guidance is 128 MB RAM per process as a minimum and 512 MB per process recommended; actual needs vary with users, apps, files, and activity. Those figures describe memory per process, not a complete hardware specification. See the Nextcloud system requirements before planning a deployment.
A provider handles the server, but sets its own terms
Nextcloud also points users to providers offering accounts. A provider-hosted account can spare you much of the server administration, but capacity, availability, pricing, geography, and terms depend on that provider. Do not assume that Nextcloud itself includes unlimited free storage.

ownCloud illustrates the same distinction: its pricing page labels Community “Basic & free” and describes it as self-managed and on-premises, while enterprise subscriptions and hosted ownCloud.online packages are separate. A free-software license or edition does not, by itself, promise a free hosted account.
How Nextcloud works across computers and phones
Desktop sync
Nextcloud’s version 36 user manual recommends its sync client for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Files placed in a synced local directory are synchronized with the server and other desktop clients. That gives you a familiar way to keep selected files available on your computers. See the desktop and mobile sync manual.

Mobile sync has an Android limitation
Nextcloud provides clients for Android and iOS, but its user manual says bidirectional sync (two-way sync) has not yet been fully implemented in the Android client. If automatically syncing changes both to and from an Android device is essential, test that exact workflow before moving your main files.
Sharing and collaboration
Nextcloud’s sharing manual documents sharing with public links, users, groups, circles, Talk conversations, and users or groups on federated Nextcloud servers. Public links can be read-only or allow upload and editing, and can be protected with a password or expiration date. File Drop lets recipients upload files without seeing files already in the folder. An administrator may disable or restrict options, so available controls depend on the server configuration. Details are in the Nextcloud file-sharing manual.

Nextcloud’s product page also describes collaboration and integrations with Microsoft environments, including Office Online-related options. Treat those as integration capabilities, not proof that a free Nextcloud setup duplicates every Microsoft 365 feature or works without additional licensing or configuration.
When Syncthing is the better choice
Syncthing describes itself as a continuous file synchronization program for two or more computers. Its project site says files are stored on participating computers rather than elsewhere, there is no central server, communication is protected by TLS, and devices are identified by cryptographic certificates. It is open source and supports desktop systems including Windows, macOS, and Linux.

That model can suit someone who wants folders synchronized among their own computers or trusted peers and can keep those devices available. It is not a one-for-one replacement for a hosted account with a central browser file portal and ordinary public-link sharing. Compare the actual workflow you need, rather than treating all synchronization tools as interchangeable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to switch without losing track of files or workflows
Product documentation describes features and supported environments; it does not guarantee that OneDrive content, versions, permissions, shared links, or Microsoft-specific behavior will transfer intact. Keep the existing OneDrive copy until you have checked the replacement.
Quick Recap
- Inventory your setup. List the devices, shared folders, and files you need available offline. Note how other people access shared content.
- Separate files from Microsoft-specific workflows. Identify Office collaboration, account-linked sharing, or other features that depend on Microsoft services; a file copy alone may not preserve those workflows.
- Choose where the new cloud will live. Decide between a self-hosted Nextcloud server and an account with a provider, accounting for who will manage storage, updates, and recovery.
- Trial representative content. Start with a small set of ordinary files, shared files, and any important edge cases. Check filenames and folder structure, then confirm that the intended people can access or upload files as expected.
- Check each device. Verify desktop sync and the mobile behaviors you rely on, especially two-way sync on Android.
- Plan backup and recovery separately. Synchronization is not a backup: unwanted changes or deletions may synchronize too. Establish a separate recovery copy and process.
- Keep OneDrive until verification is complete. Do not remove the original copy until you have confirmed the destination files and critical workflows.
What to compare before you commit
- Access model: Do you need a central browser-accessible cloud, or only synchronization among devices?
- Administration: Are you prepared to operate a server, or would you rather rely on a provider?
- Clients: Do desktop and mobile apps support the behavior you need?
- Sharing: Can you set the access controls your collaborators require, and are they enabled by the server administrator?
- Recovery: Who owns backups, and how would you restore files after deletion, corruption, or a service failure?
- Collaboration: Which Microsoft Office or account-linked workflows must continue to work?
- Total cost: Include hardware or hosting and the time or support needed to maintain the service—not just the software license.
