An Onn Google TV box can be a perfectly usable Plex playback client, and a particular owner may find it feels better than an aging NVIDIA Shield TV. But the available evidence does not establish that Onn is generally faster or more compatible with Plex. The exact Onn model and the author’s test conditions matter: a 2023 Onn 4K box is not the same product as the 2024 Onn 4K Pro, and Plex playback is not the same job as hosting a Plex server.
What “handles Plex better” can—and cannot—mean
For this comparison, “better” should describe the experience on the files and home theater actually tested: how quickly Plex opens, whether navigation and seeking feel responsive, and whether playback starts and stays stable. It should not be read as proof that every Onn box outperforms every Shield TV.
No controlled, independently verified Onn-versus-Shield benchmark for Plex responsiveness is established here. The result is best presented as a personal observation, with the precise Onn model, Shield generation, software, and test setup identified. Those details are not established in the available account, so the result cannot be reproduced or generalized from the headline alone.
Which Onn box and Shield are being compared?
The model distinction matters. A review of the 2023 Onn Google TV 4K Streaming Box reports that Plex can be installed and used, alongside 4K playback and HDR10+ support. That supports basic client suitability for that reviewed device; it does not show that it is faster than a Shield or that it handles every file, HDR format, or audio setup. There is also discussion of a 2024 Onn 4K Pro, including individual reports of mixed results with Dolby Vision Profile 8 and advanced audio on Google TV devices. Forum experiences are not formal compatibility tests and should not be treated as a guarantee for a particular setup. See the Plex community discussion.
Before drawing a product-level conclusion, identify the model label or number on the Onn device and whether the Shield is the tube-style Shield TV or Shield TV Pro. The software and Plex client versions also belong in a meaningful comparison.

Plex client playback is different from running Plex Media Server
If Plex Media Server runs on a separate PC, NAS, or other host, the streaming device is primarily a client: it connects to the server and plays its media. In that use case, a cheaper client may be enough if it handles the owner’s files and audio/video chain well.
The Shield TV Pro can also serve a different role. NVIDIA’s October 2019 announcement says its two USB ports can be used to run Plex Media Server and connect high-capacity drives or other USB devices. That is a documented Pro feature at launch, not evidence that an Onn box can replace the Shield as a server host. NVIDIA’s 2019 Shield TV announcement.

- Easy Setup: Access your Google account and configure the device, language and Wi-Fi network
Therefore, an Onn box that feels better for Plex playback does not automatically replace a Shield that stores media or hosts the server. Keep the server and client jobs separate when deciding what to retire.
Why the result depends on your files and equipment
Plex may direct-play a file to a client or require the server to transcode it. The outcome depends on the media, client support, server capacity, network, and playback chain—not just the streaming box. A useful comparison should note whether the same files direct-played or triggered transcoding, rather than labeling all playback differences as device speed.

Video and audio compatibility also depend on the file format and profile, Plex app, device generation, television, and any receiver or soundbar between them. Reports of Dolby Vision Profile 8 or advanced-audio problems on Google TV devices are reasons to test the formats you use, not grounds to assume every Onn device will fail or succeed.
- Navigation: Compare opening Plex, browsing the same library, and moving between screens.
- Seeking and startup: Try the same files and note seek response and time to playback.
- Playback path: Check whether Plex reports direct play or transcoding for each test file.
- Audio and video: Test the formats, HDR profiles, and passthrough behavior you actually use, through your own TV or AVR.
- Network: Keep the server, network connection, and account conditions consistent.
What the Shield may still offer
NVIDIA’s 2019 launch announcement positioned Shield TV Pro as more than a basic streaming client, listing USB connectivity for storage and Plex Media Server, Dolby Vision and Atmos, AI upscaling, and GeForce NOW support. These are launch-era vendor claims and feature descriptions, not an independent comparison with Onn or confirmation of present-day software and service support. Those capabilities matter only if they fit your use. Someone who streams from a separate server and does not use Shield-specific gaming, upscaling, or USB functions may place more value on a smooth, affordable Plex client. Someone relying on local storage or server hosting should evaluate those functions separately before replacing the Shield Pro.

- Confirm the models. Record the Onn model name or number, Shield generation, operating-system versions, and Plex client versions.
- Map the server setup. Note whether Plex Media Server runs on a PC, NAS, Shield, or another host, and whether your media is local or remote.
- Test your own library. Use representative files, including any demanding video or audio formats you rely on. Compare browsing, seeking, startup, direct play versus transcoding, and playback stability.
- Use the same playback chain. Where possible, keep the TV, receiver, network, server, account, and files unchanged between tests.
- Weigh lost functions and cost. Account for server/storage needs, gaming, upscaling, and current device price and availability. Current prices and inventory are not established here, so check them for your region before deciding.
Where Google TV Streamer fits
Google TV Streamer (4K) is a separate contextual option, not another name for an Onn box. Google lists up to 4K, 4 GB RAM, 32 GB storage, Dolby Vision, Atmos, built-in Ethernet, and a box form factor; it recommends a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 cable for optimal performance with that device. These specifications should not be attributed to Onn. See Google’s Google TV Streamer specifications.
Those published specifications do not establish Plex responsiveness relative to either Onn or Shield. Choose among the devices by testing your playback needs and accounting for server duties and other features you use, not by treating one product’s spec sheet as a performance benchmark.
