I moved the automations I could control through Home Assistant into workflows running on my self-hosted n8n instance. n8n can read Home Assistant entity states and call its services, which gave me a flexible way to build local workflows. But this is not a claim that every smart-home feature is cloud-free: that depends on the devices and integrations involved, and some Home Assistant features still use cloud services.
What I changed—and what “local” means here
My setup uses Home Assistant as the layer that exposes device states and services, with n8n coordinating workflows against it. The built-in Home Assistant node supports reading entity states and calling services, along with other operations such as handling events, working with templates, and accessing camera proxies. That gives a workflow a way to react to Home Assistant data and ask Home Assistant to perform an action.
In this arrangement, “local” describes where I run n8n and how it reaches Home Assistant; it does not automatically describe every part of the device-to-cloud path. A device or integration may still contact its vendor, and a cloud-dependent feature remains cloud-dependent even when the workflow logic runs at home. The n8n integration page describes Home Assistant’s local-control and privacy capabilities, but that is vendor documentation, not an independent security audit.
How I connected n8n to Home Assistant
-
Choose where n8n runs. n8n offers self-hosted and cloud deployment options. For a workflow intended to execute on my own infrastructure, I chose self-hosting. n8n’s overview explains the deployment choices: n8n overview.

Use the built-in Home Assistant node. In the workflow editor, add the Home Assistant node and configure the operation needed: for example, read an entity state or call a service. The available operations are documented in the n8n Home Assistant node reference.
-
Keep the connection boundary deliberate. Connect n8n to Home Assistant in a way that suits the network layout, and do not expose an endpoint publicly just to make a local workflow work. If you choose to use Home Assistant webhooks, keep their IDs secret and leave them local-only unless remote triggering is actually needed.

Build and verify one workflow at a time. Start with a state read or a service call, then confirm that the expected Home Assistant entity or device responds before moving more automations. This makes it easier to spot whether a failure is in the workflow, Home Assistant, or an integration beyond it.
What I gained—and what I did not prove
Putting workflow execution on a host I control gives me more control over where that workflow runs and how I handle its data. It does not establish that less data leaves my home in every case, nor does it prove that every device continues working during an internet outage. Those outcomes depend on the devices, integrations, and remote-access choices in the particular household.

Moving automation logic also changes the maintenance burden. With self-hosted n8n, I am responsible for securing and updating the host, protecting stored data, and reviewing the workflow components I install. n8n’s guidance recommends measures such as a reverse proxy for TLS, encryption at rest, security audits, and care with community nodes. Self-hosting is control over the deployment, not a security guarantee: n8n security guidance.
Keep webhook access and secrets in mind
Home Assistant webhooks are restricted to the local network by default. Home Assistant notes that a webhook does not require authentication beyond possession of its ID, so the ID should be treated as a secret. Enabling direct internet access changes the endpoint’s exposure; if remote triggering is unnecessary, keep the webhook local-only. See Home Assistant automation triggers and webhooks.

If you connect through MQTT, account for discovery and restarts
MQTT discovery messages can cause Home Assistant to create entities or device automations. Retained messages and broker birth/will messages can help discovery and availability persist across restarts, but retained discovery messages can also leave ghost entities if a device or configuration is removed without clearing the retained data. Plan how entities are created, marked available, and cleaned up rather than treating discovery as a one-time detail. Home Assistant documents these behaviors in its MQTT documentation.

Home Assistant can run locally while selected features continue to use external services. Home Assistant Cloud documents remote access and integrations that include Alexa, Google Assistant, speech services, backups, and webhooks; it also notes that users at home reach Home Assistant over the local network. Check the data path for each feature you keep enabled instead of assuming that a local Home Assistant installation makes the whole smart home cloud-independent: Home Assistant Cloud.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
That distinction is why I describe this as replacing the cloud automations I could move into locally run workflows, not eliminating every cloud connection. n8n gives me an integration point for Home Assistant; it cannot make a vendor’s cloud-only capability local.
