Animated WebP is not guaranteed to be smaller than GIF for every file. If your replacement grew, the result may reflect the encoding mode, converter settings, how the frames were represented, or the animation itself. Without the original GIF, the WebP output, and the conversion settings, there is no way to identify the specific cause—but a controlled comparison can narrow it down.
Why can an animated WebP be bigger than a GIF?
WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression, and animated WebP can use either mode, including a mixture across frames. Those choices trade file size against fidelity. A lossless conversion preserves pixel values, but that does not mean it will produce a smaller file than the source GIF. Google’s WebP compression documentation describes the two encoding approaches; its WebP FAQ notes that animations can combine lossy and lossless frames.
Animation structure matters, too. WebP represents animation through frame and animation data, with frame-handling behavior such as blending and disposal. If the conversion changes how frames, timing, transparency, or dimensions are represented, the output may be larger—or the comparison may no longer represent equivalent animations. WebP’s general compression advantages describe format capabilities and broad comparisons; they do not predict the result for every individual GIF. There is no universal winner for every animation.

How to troubleshoot the larger file
- Record the exact conversion setup. Note the converter name and version, encoding mode, quality or effort options, and any other settings. The libwebp gif2webp manual documents lossy encoding, per-frame lossy or lossless selection, and compression-effort options. Flags can vary by installed version, so check the manual for your version.
- Check whether lossless mode was used. If exact pixels are required, lossless may be the right choice, but compare its byte size rather than assuming it will beat GIF. If lossy compression is acceptable, make a separate lossy conversion and inspect it for visible artifacts.
- Verify animation equivalence. Compare the source and output for dimensions, frame count, frame timing, loop behavior, transparency, and how frames blend or dispose. If any of these changed, first decide whether the output still meets the docs site’s requirements.
- Measure the actual files. Compare their byte sizes after confirming the settings above. Keep the conversion mode and options with the result so you can reproduce it and make a meaningful comparison.
Choose the conversion based on what the docs site needs
Use the same checks for each candidate output rather than choosing by extension alone:
- File size: Compare actual bytes at a visually acceptable quality.
- Pixel fidelity: Choose lossless when exact pixels matter; consider lossy when small visual changes are acceptable.
- Visual quality and transparency: Inspect the animation, especially edges and transparent areas, for artifacts.
- Animation fidelity: Confirm dimensions, frame count, timing, loop behavior, blending, and disposal match the intended result.
- Reproducibility: Record the converter version and settings alongside the output.
The WebP format is specified in IETF RFC 9649, published in November 2024. For conversion behavior, the installed tool’s version-specific documentation is the practical reference.
