But the headline is a personal claim, and no verified account here establishes why its author quit or what they did—and didn’t—miss. The useful takeaway is not that everyone should leave. It is that you can choose a listening setup that fits your priorities, whether that means another subscription or a more deliberate mix of radio, recommendations, purchases, and local music.
What can quitting Spotify change?
For many listeners, the appeal of a streaming service is its ease: open an app, press play, and let playlists or recommendations fill the silence. The tradeoff is that discovery can feel repetitive or passive. Leaving may interrupt that routine, but it does not automatically make listening better. Your experience depends on what you replace the service with and what you want music to do in your life.
A month-long experiment by Frankie Adkins, reported by The Guardian in July 2025, tried radio, vinyl, iPods, friends’ recommendations, record fairs, and Bandcamp after stepping away from Spotify. Adkins said recommendations from people made listening feel more connected to those people. That is one writer’s account, not evidence that human recommendations work better for everyone.
The experiment also had a limit: Adkins said Spotify’s recommendations had not been “cleansed” by the end. A temporary break did not erase the account’s listening history. If you return, your old profile may still influence recommendations; a break alone should not be treated as a reset.

Choose what you want to replace
Before cancelling, identify what Spotify currently does for you. A replacement that preserves one benefit may give up another. Consider these questions:
- Convenience: Do you want one app with on-demand access, or are you willing to spend time finding and organizing music?
- Discovery: Do you rely on personalized playlists, or would you rather get suggestions from friends, radio, shops, or artists?
- Library fit: Are the artists and releases you care about available where you plan to listen?
- Cost: What does the option cost where you live, including any plan or features you need?
- Access and ownership: Do you want streaming access, or copies you can keep and play locally?
- Devices and sound: Does the service or format work with your phone, speakers, car, and listening equipment?
- Artist support: Do you want to buy particular releases directly, rather than rely only on streaming?
Four routes after Spotify
Move to another streaming service
Apple Music, Qobuz, Tidal, and Deezer are alternatives mentioned in the coverage, but the available accounts do not offer a current, region-by-region comparison. Before switching, check each service’s local price, catalog, discovery features, device support, and audio formats against your own needs. A service that suits one listener’s library or equipment may not suit yours.

Personal reviews can help you understand why an individual chose a service, but they are not apples-to-apples tests. For example, Tom’s Guide has published a writer’s account of moving from Spotify to Apple Music, while TechRadar published a writer’s personal account of trying Qobuz. Treat their impressions as individual experiences, and verify current availability and terms in your country.
Make discovery more human
Radio, friends’ recommendations, and record shops offer ways to encounter music without relying on a personalized feed. In the Guardian experiment, Adkins described this approach as making listening feel more connected to the people doing the recommending. It may also take more effort and produce fewer instant, tailored suggestions.

In the same Guardian feature, Newcastle record-shop and underground-radio operator Justin Moon described what some customers seek: “It’s not this kind of passive wash-over-you rubbish that you make your two-minute noodles to and forget all about 10 seconds later.” That is Moon’s view of a particular listening experience, not a neutral finding about streaming or its listeners.
Buy selected releases directly
Bandcamp appears in the Guardian coverage as both a place to discover music and a venue for buying releases. Buying an album or track is a practical way to support a particular artist or release directly. It does not establish a universal payout advantage over streaming, and it will not replace the breadth or convenience of a subscription for every listener.

A Guardian report on the 2025 DIY boycott movement describes artists and listeners discussing a step away from Spotify, including artist sales through Bandcamp. Their stated motivations and criticisms belong to those participants; the report does not settle how artists are compensated across platforms.
Listen to local files or physical formats
Local music files and vinyl can make listening feel more deliberate, but they involve different work and tradeoffs: finding releases, acquiring copies, managing files or records, and using compatible equipment. Adkins’s experiment included iPods and vinyl; it does not establish a particular current player or that the author of this headline uses one. Treat a dedicated portable player as optional, not a necessary part of quitting.

Try a reversible experiment before cancelling
You do not have to decide that one listening method must replace everything. Test a mix for a few weeks, then assess whether it works for your routines.
- List what you use Spotify for. Note the playlists, saved albums, background listening, discovery, and devices you would need to replace.
- Pick one substitute for each important need. For example, try another subscription for on-demand access, ask a friend for an album recommendation, or buy one release directly from an artist.
- Test the practical details. Check catalog coverage for your favorite artists, the local cost, device compatibility, and how you will access music offline if that matters to you.
- Keep the trial small. Use a short playlist, a handful of recommendations, or a few local files before rebuilding your entire library.
- Decide based on your own listening. Keep the options that make you more satisfied or better match your priorities; return to a subscription if its convenience is worth the cost to you.
There is no established overall winner among these routes, and the available personal accounts do not provide controlled comparisons of discovery, sound quality, artist compensation, or user satisfaction. The best choice is the one that fits your budget, listening habits, devices, and values—not a universal verdict on Spotify.
