An unsolicited text saying “Your Messenger verification code is G-…” does not prove that someone accessed your account. Don’t share or use the code if you didn’t request it. The wording alone cannot reliably identify which service sent the message or why; check the account and device history that fit your situation.
What the “G-” verification text does—and does not—mean
The phrase appears in Google Account and Google Messages help-community reports, where some users describe the message as coming from Google or Jibe RCS. “Messenger” is ambiguous: a Google Account community response noted that Google codes use a “G-” format while Messenger is a Facebook app. That observation is a reason not to assume the text came from Facebook Messenger, not definitive proof of the sender in every case. Possible explanations raised in community guidance include someone entering your phone number by mistake or an attempt to verify or access an account. The text itself cannot distinguish between them, and receiving a code is not evidence that a login succeeded. Google Account community discussion Google Messages community discussion
What to do if you didn’t request the code
- Keep it private. Don’t send the code to anyone or read it to a caller or texter who asks for it. If you didn’t start a verification, leave it unused. Google Account community guidance Google Messages community guidance
- Check activity on the account that might be involved. If you can identify a likely Google or Facebook account, review its recent sign-ins and security settings for anything you don’t recognize. A clean check is useful, but community reports of no suspicious activity do not establish that every case is harmless. Google Account community reports
- Use your device history to choose the next check. If the texts began after moving from an Android phone to an iPhone, check Google Messages’ Chat features (RCS) on the old Android device. A Google Messages Community product expert recommended turning Chat features off in that specific transition scenario; it is a conditional troubleshooting step, not a universal explanation. - Check for an old RCS registration when that history fits. If the number was previously associated with Google Messages on an old device, Google provides an RCS deactivation page. Use this route only if an old Google Messages/RCS association is plausible.
- Ask your carrier about provisioning after a number change. If the messages started around a number port, SIM change, or carrier/device migration, ask the carrier to check number provisioning. A community response raised porting as a possible cause in one case; it has not been established as the cause for all such texts. Google Messages community discussion
If the texts keep coming
Repetition alone does not establish that your account was breached. A Google Account community expert described a wrong-number entry as a typical explanation and noted that the recipient may have no direct way to stop another person’s verification requests, apart from possible carrier help. What controls exist depends on which service generated the text. Google Account community guidance

For the Android-to-iPhone situation specifically, Google Messages Community product expert Richard Caelius wrote: “Hi there, this is because the Jibe RCS service, which is the Google equivalent to Apple’s iMessage, is trying to verify you and hence keeps sending you SMS messages.” That was guidance in response to a user who had changed phones, not an official finding about every text with this wording.
