Microsoft’s Windows App web client can now print to locally attached printers when you use Windows 365 or Azure Virtual Desktop. The feature, announced June 18, 2025, addresses a practical limitation for people who access those remote Windows environments in a browser—but it does not establish support for every printer, client, or remote service.
What changed in Windows App on the web?
Windows App is a client for connecting to remote Windows resources; it is not a Windows 365 subscription or a Cloud PC by itself. Microsoft describes it as a way to connect to services including Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, Remote PC, Remote Desktop Services, and Microsoft Dev Box. The app is available on several platforms, but the printing announcement applies specifically to its web client and to Windows 365 and Azure Virtual Desktop.
In that scope, a person viewing a remote desktop or app in the browser can send a document to a printer attached locally to their device. Microsoft describes the change as letting users print directly to locally attached printers. The company did not publish a printer compatibility list, an operating-system matrix for this capability, or a comparison with printing through the desktop app. Microsoft’s June 18, 2025 announcement is the source for the feature and its stated limits.
Why this matters if you work in a browser
Remote work can put a document inside a hosted Windows session while the printer is physically connected to the device you are using. The newly announced browser capability is meant to bridge that gap for the named services: you can work in the web client and print to a locally attached printer without first moving the document out of the remote workflow.

That may make the web client more practical for someone who needs occasional local printing. It is not proof that every user needs to change clients, that printing will work with every printer, or that a new printer is necessary. Microsoft’s statement that the change streamlines printing is the vendor’s description, not an independently tested performance result.
Which Windows App features are included?
Microsoft’s June 2025 post also described two other web-client changes. They are separate from printing:

- Remote App launcher: launch additional Remote Apps from the workspace toolbar without switching tabs.
- Connect in desktop app: choose this option to open a Windows 365 or Azure Virtual Desktop session in the desktop Windows App.
These additions do not make every feature available on every platform. For example, Microsoft’s Azure Virtual Desktop Teams documentation says calling and meetings require media optimization and supported clients, and lists specific Windows App clients and versions for that function. That documentation concerns Teams media optimization, not printer support; it is a reminder to check the requirements for the particular feature you need.
What to check before relying on web printing
- Remote service: the announcement names Windows 365 and Azure Virtual Desktop. It does not establish printing support for every other service Windows App can connect to.
- Client: the new capability is described for Windows App on the web. Do not assume the announcement defines behavior in native desktop or mobile apps.
- Printer connection: Microsoft specifies a locally attached printer, but does not give a model list or define every supported connection type.
- Access to the remote resource: Windows App connects you to remote resources; it does not provide the account, subscription, or assigned workspace. You need access to the relevant Windows 365 or Azure Virtual Desktop environment.
If any of those details determine whether your setup will work, confirm them with your organization’s administrator or the applicable Microsoft service documentation. The announcement alone does not provide a setup walkthrough or compatibility guarantee.

Do you need to buy a printer or stop using the desktop app?
No purchase or workflow change follows from the announcement. If you already have a locally attached printer and use Windows App in a browser with Windows 365 or Azure Virtual Desktop, the feature may remove a reason to leave the web client for printing. Microsoft did not name or test printer models, establish specific USB requirements, or compare setup effort, print quality, or cost with the desktop client. Keep using the client that meets your needs unless the web option solves a specific problem for you.

The concrete change is narrow: web-client printing to locally attached printers in Windows 365 and Azure Virtual Desktop. Microsoft announced it on June 18, 2025. Its post does not establish universal printer compatibility, support across all Windows App platforms, or a history of every earlier configuration. The headline’s description of this as a “major feature gap” is a judgment about the importance of the change, not a claim that Microsoft documented every user’s past experience.

For context, Microsoft reported more than 3 million active hours of Windows App usage across platforms in March 2024, following the app’s preview launch. That is a dated usage figure, not a current adoption count and not evidence that printing caused usage to grow. Microsoft’s March 21, 2024 post gives the context for that figure.
