Connecting an agent to your everyday browser can let it work with a session you have already signed into, rather than asking it to sign in again. The tradeoff is substantial: the agent may gain access to data across that browser profile, not just the page you intend it to use. The exact access depends on the connection method and the agent software.
What “eyes on my browser” means
This workflow connects an agent to a browser session that is already open or authenticated. It can be useful when a site relies on single sign-on, two-factor authentication, cookies, or a page you have already opened. It is different from launching a separate automation browser with its own profile: the attached browser may contain your personal and work accounts, open tabs, and saved session data.
“Local” is not, by itself, a guarantee that every part of an agent setup keeps browser contents on your machine. For example, Chrome says its own Chrome DevTools for agents server runs locally and does not send browser data, session tokens, or telemetry to Google. That statement applies to that server, not automatically to third-party agents or other connectors.
Three ways to connect, and when each fits

What access does an authenticated profile grant?
Chrome’s auto-connect documentation states: “When auto-connect is active, your agent has access to all data in your browser profile, including open tabs, session storage, local storage, cookies, and other data surfaced through JavaScript APIs.” Chrome recommends using this mode only with agents you trust. An authenticated browser should therefore not be treated as a security sandbox or as inherently limited to one site or one tab.

That warning is specific to the documented Chrome auto-connect access boundary. The Playwright approaches have their own connection mechanics; do not assume that the three methods grant identical capabilities or provide the same privacy guarantees. Check the connector and agent you actually plan to use, including whether it can read or change pages available in the connected browser.
Choose the profile before you connect
- Identify the exact browser and profile, including whether it contains personal or workplace accounts.
- Decide whether the task truly needs an existing logged-in session, cookies, or installed extensions. If it does not, a separate automation profile may be a better boundary.
- Use a narrowly scoped task and avoid leaving unrelated sensitive tabs open where possible. This reduces exposure to irrelevant material but does not establish a universal one-tab restriction.
- Verify how the specific agent and connector handle browser data. Chrome’s local-process and no-data-sent statement covers Chrome DevTools for agents, not every agent implementation.
Set up the connection without confusing attachment and launch
Chrome DevTools auto-connect
- Confirm the browser is Chrome 144 or later and that remote debugging is enabled, as required by the current auto-connect guide.
- Start the Chrome DevTools for agents auto-connect flow for the active Chrome instance.
- Review the browser’s permission prompt and allow the session only if you trust the agent and have selected the intended profile.
- Keep the task within the access you are willing to grant; the documented access can include profile-wide browser data, not merely the visible page.

Playwright CDP attachment
Use this route when your automation can connect to a Chromium browser through a CDP endpoint. Playwright documents connectOverCDP as Chromium-only. It is an attachment route, not proof that every browser profile or setup is supported; check the API’s compatibility notes before relying on it. See Playwright’s BrowserType API.
Playwright extension
Use the extension route when the requirement is specifically to work with existing Chrome or Edge tabs and reuse their logged-in sessions, cookies, or installed extensions. When you need isolation instead
Attaching to a real browser is not the only way to automate a website. If the task does not need your existing authenticated session, use a separate automation profile instead of exposing your everyday profile. Playwright explicitly warns that automating Chrome’s default profile with persistent launch is unsupported and recommends a separate directory for the automation profile. That is a caveat about persistent launch; it does not mean every method of attaching to an already-running browser is impossible.
Keep the distinction clear: an attached session can reuse the state you already have, while a separate profile provides a different browser state to configure. Neither the word “local” nor the existence of a browser prompt alone establishes what a particular third-party agent can retain or transmit.
