Moving your ChatGPT history into Gemini has a dedicated import flow; moving it back into ChatGPT does not restore the same experience. Google documents importing a ChatGPT export ZIP and separately importing remembered preferences. OpenAI’s documented route in the opposite direction lets ChatGPT refer to an export in a new conversation, but does not rebuild the old chats in the sidebar. That difference explains why switching one way can feel easy and the return trip like a nightmare—without making “nightmare” a universal verdict.
Why the switch is easier in one direction
Google provides a Gemini feature called Import memory to Gemini with two distinct options: import chat history from another AI platform, or import preferences and other remembered context through a separate prompt-based flow. OpenAI’s documented export-upload method is narrower: it makes exported conversations available as reference in a new ChatGPT conversation rather than restoring them as individual chats.
In practical terms, Gemini offers an archive-ingestion path, while ChatGPT’s documented return path is for consulting an archive. These are not equivalent migrations, and neither instruction set promises that every platform-specific detail will carry across intact.
Move ChatGPT history into Gemini
- Request the export in ChatGPT. Open Settings > Data controls > Export data and confirm. OpenAI says the resulting ZIP includes chat history and other account data. See OpenAI’s export instructions.
- Upload the archive in Gemini on the web. Open Settings & help > Import memory to Gemini. In the Import chats section, choose Add and select the ZIP file. Google’s help page lists a maximum ZIP size of 5 GB, up to five ZIP uploads per day, and processing that can take up to a day. These are the limits and timing stated on Google’s page reviewed in 2026, not a guarantee that processing always takes that long or that the limits cannot change. Follow Google’s Gemini import instructions.
- Import preferences separately if you want them. In the memory-import flow, copy the prompt Gemini provides, paste it into the AI you are switching from, then paste that AI’s response into Gemini’s memory-import field. This is a separate step from uploading chat history; one does not replace the other.
Check whether Gemini’s import is available to you
Google’s help page says the feature requires a personal Google Account and an account holder aged 18 or older. It is unavailable for work, school, and supervised accounts, and is not available in the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, or the United Kingdom. Availability can change; check Google’s current eligibility and import details before preparing an archive.

What happens when you try to move back to ChatGPT
OpenAI’s documented method is to upload an exported conversation file to a new ChatGPT conversation so it can be used as a reference. OpenAI explicitly says this does not merge accounts or recreate every prior conversation as its own chat, and it does not restore the original sidebar. You may be able to ask about material in the uploaded export, but that is different from returning to the old conversation list. The process is described in OpenAI’s conversation-transfer instructions.
OpenAI also says this method does not transfer subscriptions, workspace membership, custom instructions, memories, GPTs, files, or other settings. Treat those as separate account matters rather than assuming a conversation archive carries them over.

Who can export from ChatGPT
OpenAI’s transfer instructions document the export path for personal ChatGPT accounts. Eligible Edu account exports depend on an administrator enabling export. Business and Enterprise workspace users cannot self-serve an export through ChatGPT settings, according to the same instructions. If you use a managed account, check with its administrator about available options.

Google’s March 26, 2026 announcement said, “You can now import your AI memories and chat history into Gemini.” The announcement describes the feature, not a guarantee of perfect fidelity. Google’s cited instructions do not fully specify how every attachment, generated asset, formatting detail, or conversation metadata field is handled. Do not assume those elements will transfer exactly as they appeared in the source service.

Google says imported history lets users continue chats, but the available instructions do not promise that every imported conversation will behave identically to its original. Keep the original export if you may need to consult it, and verify important details in Gemini after import. Google announced the tools on March 26, 2026; its Gemini release updates record the rollout.

Choose the route based on what you need to keep
- Want to continue using old chats in Gemini? Use the ZIP chat-import path, if your account and region are eligible.
- Want Gemini to know preferences or context? Use the separate memory-import prompt as well; it is not the chat archive.
- Want old chats restored as separate ChatGPT sidebar conversations? OpenAI’s documented export-upload process does not provide that restoration.
- Need subscriptions, settings, workspace access, files, or GPTs? Check those separately. Neither service’s cited migration instructions establish that they move with the chat history.
