Changing DNS on a Fire TV Stick changes which service looks up website and streaming-service domain names for the device. It does not, by itself, add shows to a catalog or increase the internet speed in your plan. What may be “better” is a different resolver’s behavior—such as its filtering or privacy policy—or a change in how a particular connection works on your network. Without details about the specific setup, there is no basis to claim a particular playback or content benefit.

What changing DNS on a Fire TV Stick actually does

DNS is the system that translates a domain name into an IP address so a device can find the relevant service. Cloudflare describes it this way: “Nearly everything on the Internet starts with a DNS request.” That is Cloudflare’s explanation of DNS, not a measurement of Fire TV performance. Cloudflare 1.1.1.1

When you change the resolver, you change which DNS provider handles those lookups and, potentially, which provider policies apply. The DNS lookup is only one step in establishing a connection. It is not the streaming app’s catalog, your account’s eligibility, or a substitute for the app’s connection to its service.

Why it does not automatically unlock more streaming content

A DNS change is not evidence that a streaming service’s licensing, account eligibility, location rules, or catalog has changed. Do not assume that entering a public resolver address will unlock another library or additional titles. If access to a particular service changed on your Fire TV Stick, that is an observation about that specific setup; it does not establish a general result for other devices, accounts, or networks.

What might be better: resolver behavior and privacy

Resolvers differ in their filtering policies and in what they say about handling DNS data. Cloudflare’s standard 1.1.1.1 resolver does not filter content. Its 1.1.1.1 for Families variants offer malware filtering, with an additional option to filter adult content. Choosing a filtered resolver can affect whether certain domains resolve; that is different from changing a streaming catalog. Cloudflare resolver setup and filtering options

Cloudflare says ordinary DNS queries are typically sent in plaintext and documents DNS over HTTPS (DoH) and DNS over TLS (DoT) as encrypted alternatives. Simply entering a resolver’s IP address does not show that the Fire TV Stick is using either encrypted protocol; the client and resolver must support and use the relevant protocol. Cloudflare’s privacy statements apply to Cloudflare’s own resolver, not to DNS providers generally. The company says it will not sell or share users’ personal data with third parties or use it for targeted advertising, and says specified truncated client IP information and limited resolver logs are deleted within 25 hours. These are Cloudflare’s published commitments. Cloudflare public DNS privacy policy

When comparing resolvers, check whether they filter domains, whether the device-to-resolver connection is encrypted, what the provider says it logs and retains, and whether your Fire TV setup supports the configuration you want.

What a DNS change cannot improve

Changing DNS does not upgrade the Fire TV Stick’s hardware or raise the connection speed in your internet plan. The September 21, 2026 report from Cinco Días makes that limited point; it does not establish a speed result for any particular DNS provider or Fire TV setup. Cinco Días report on changing DNS on a Fire TV Stick

There is no supported general speed percentage, latency improvement, or number of newly available titles to attach to a DNS change. A specific result would need to be measured or observed on the actual device, network, and service rather than inferred from changing resolver addresses.

How to check a Fire TV Stick connection before changing settings

Amazon’s Network Status tool can help distinguish a device-to-router problem from a router-to-internet problem. On supported devices, it may also provide a speed test and detailed network information. Amazon Fire TV network troubleshooting

  1. On the Fire TV Stick, open Settings > Network.
  2. Choose the connected network and open Network Status if that option is available on your model.
  3. Review the device-to-router and router-to-internet results, along with any recommendations shown.
  4. If the connection problem is inside a streaming app, consult that service’s troubleshooting guidance rather than assuming DNS is the cause.

When a streaming service recommends changing DNS

Service support guidance is specific to the problem and app; it is not a universal DNS setup procedure for every Fire TV generation.

Prime Video

Prime Video says that when its app cannot connect to the internet, updating DNS settings may be necessary and directs users to the connected device’s DNS configuration. Prime Video connectivity troubleshooting

Netflix

For the playback error covered by its support page, Netflix advises restoring changed connection settings to their defaults and contacting the internet service provider for DNS troubleshooting. Follow that advice for the specified error rather than treating a custom DNS setting as a general fix. Netflix playback troubleshooting

Before changing or reverting DNS settings

Fire TV menus and network arrangements vary, so the available evidence does not establish one manual-IP procedure that applies to every Stick. Before following device-specific steps, identify the exact Fire TV model and Fire OS version, whether it connects over Wi-Fi or Ethernet, how the router is configured, and which DNS provider and addresses you intend to use. If you are troubleshooting an error, note the original settings so you can restore them if the change does not help.
