Planvio’s creator, Hatem Sweileh, built his open-source project manager around a more consequential idea: configured AI agents can use the application’s tools to propose or make changes to project work. The project describes three authority levels, from read-only assistance to bounded autonomous action. Those capabilities and safeguards are maintainer claims, not independently verified security findings.
What Planvio is—and what its creator wanted AI to do
Planvio is a self-hosted project-management application for business work, not just a software issue tracker. Its creator, Hatem Sweileh, presents it for projects such as marketing campaigns, construction, events, product launches, HR initiatives, client work, operations, and research. The project repository lists tasks and subtasks, dependencies, milestones, boards, calendar and timeline views, comments, attachments, time tracking, budgets, expenses, reporting, roles, guest access, a REST API, and webhooks.
Sweileh’s premise is that an AI assistant should be able to do more than discuss project information. “I think we’re moving from software where AI talks about the application’s data to software where AI operates the application,” he writes. His design thesis is: “The AI isn’t above the application. The AI operates through the application.” Planvio is his implementation of that idea; the repository is the project’s own description, not an independent product evaluation. Planvio’s repository documents the application and its current feature set.
How can AI actually change project work?
Planvio says it exposes application actions to AI through explicit tools rather than raw database access or a separate, elevated account. According to the repository, its 39 typed tools validate inputs, check authorization and workspace scope, carry out application actions, and record audit information. That means a configured agent could, for example, act on tasks through the application rather than merely suggest edits in a chat response. The exact available actions depend on the installed release and configuration.
#1 Best Overall
The project divides AI authority into three modes:
| Mode | What the project says it allows |
|---|---|
| Assistant | Answer questions and analyze project data without changing it. |
| Copilot | Propose changes and wait for a person to approve them. |
| Autonomous | Carry out actions within configured workspace and project limits. The project says destructive actions require approval. |
This distinction gives teams a way to start with analysis, move to approval-based changes, and consider more autonomy only where it fits their needs. It does not establish how accurately a model will interpret a request or whether every action will be appropriate; the sources do not provide independent tests of model behavior.
What limits does Planvio describe for autonomous AI?
The repository says AI actions use the same application authorization and workspace scope as human actions, generate audit records, and can be halted using a kill switch. It also says user-generated material—including task descriptions, comments, wiki pages, and imported rows—is treated as untrusted data when passed to the model. Those are relevant controls when an agent can make changes, but they are architectural claims from the project, not a security audit or a guarantee that failures or prompt injection are impossible.
Rank #2
For a team evaluating autonomous actions, the practical question is not simply whether an agent can edit a task. It is what it may change, in which workspace, under whose authority, and how a person can review or stop it. Planvio documents controls aimed at those questions; administrators should verify the behavior and configuration in the release they deploy before granting meaningful autonomy.
Can you self-host Planvio on shared hosting?
The project documents a browser-based cPanel deployment route that is intended to avoid requiring Docker, Redis, PostgreSQL, a continuously running queue daemon, SSH, or root access in production. Its README lists PHP 8.3 or 8.4, MySQL 5.7 or later or MariaDB 10.6 or later, Apache or LiteSpeed (and also documents Nginx), two cron entries, and about 350 MB of disk space plus room for attachments. These are the repository’s stated requirements; confirm them against the release you plan to install and with your hosting provider.
Install a release archive through the browser
The documented shared-hosting path uses a release archive rather than a source build. The README’s flow is to upload and extract the archive with the hosting File Manager, point the domain’s document root at the application as directed, create and configure a MySQL database, run the installer, set up the required cron jobs and SMTP, then configure AI if desired. The project says its queue is database-backed and drained by a short-lived cron worker. Provider-specific limits and configuration can still affect whether this setup works as expected.
Build from source separately
Developers who clone the repository follow a different route involving Composer and npm. Do not treat this source-build workflow as the same thing as the README’s browser-based release installation. The repository describes a stack including Laravel 13, Filament 5, Livewire 4, Alpine.js, Tailwind CSS 4, TipTap, SortableJS, and MySQL or MariaDB; these framework versions can change as the project evolves.

Which AI providers can Planvio use?
AI is optional and user-configured. Sweileh’s article names OpenAI, Anthropic, OpenAI-compatible endpoints, and local runtimes such as Ollama. The repository also lists LM Studio and vLLM, and gives Azure, OpenRouter, Groq, Together, and Mistral as examples of compatible endpoints. Compatibility does not mean every model or service has the same capabilities, cost, speed, data-retention terms, or privacy characteristics; the sources do not compare those factors. A local runtime is not automatically a fit for every privacy or performance requirement.

Planvio’s repository identifies the software as licensed under GNU AGPL v3.0 and says that users of a network-accessible modified version must be offered its source. The license text—not a summary of the project’s description—is the place to assess obligations for a particular use.

The project says it ships in English and Arabic with right-to-left layout support, and that administrators can add languages. Its feature list and AI controls should be understood as maintainer descriptions: the available sources include no independent security audit, benchmark, user review, adoption data, or comparison with other project managers. The project’s count of 39 tools is likewise a feature count reported by its maintainers, not an external measurement.
What Planvio’s approach means for teams
Planvio makes a useful distinction between AI that reads project data and AI that can operate project software. Its proposed answer is to route actions through application tools, permissions, scope, approvals, and audit records, with separate modes for different levels of authority. For a team considering it, the key evaluation is whether the installed version’s actual controls, hosting requirements, and provider configuration fit the work and risk level—not simply whether its AI can make changes.
