Maybe—but the title alone cannot establish that RAM would have fixed this NAS. An SSD cache targets certain storage access patterns; RAM addresses memory pressure and can also limit whether a cache can be created. The right next step is to identify what was slow, how the NAS was being used, and whether its model supports a memory upgrade.

Why an SSD cache may not have helped

An SSD cache is most useful when a NAS repeatedly accesses data in small, randomly located reads or writes. Synology describes the feature this way: “SSD cache enhances performance where input-output (I/O) operations require frequent access to randomly placed data.” Its DSM 7 SSD Cache help also says benefits are limited for large sequential read/write operations, such as HD video streaming, and entirely random data reads.

That distinction can explain a disappointing result. A workload that repeatedly revisits a small set of files may suit caching; a large media transfer or data with little reuse may not. The presence of an SSD does not by itself mean the NAS can serve every task faster.

Check what was slow

Pin down the task and when it slowed down: opening frequently reused files, running virtual machines or databases, completing backups, or streaming and transferring large media are different workloads. Also distinguish slow storage access from a NAS that is short of working memory. Without the model, DSM or QTS version, symptoms, and before-and-after measurements, it is not possible to conclude that this particular NAS needed RAM instead.

RAM and SSD cache address different constraints

RAM can be the more relevant upgrade if there is evidence the NAS is memory-constrained and the exact model supports additional memory. An SSD cache is a storage-I/O optimization for suitable access patterns. Neither vendor’s guidance establishes a universal rule that RAM is always better than cache, or vice versa.

There is another connection: available memory can affect cache setup. Synology’s DSM 7.1 SSD Cache White Paper estimates about 400 KB of system memory per 1 GB of SSD cache and says cache creation is limited to up to one-quarter of pre-installed memory. Those are DSM 7.1-specific configuration figures, not a performance estimate or a universal rule for other systems.

QNAP’s QTS 5.0.x guidance uses different thresholds. For QTS 5.0.0 and later, its table lists 2 GB of RAM for a 1 TB SSD cache and 4 GB for a 4 TB cache; the same page gives different thresholds for QTS 4.5.x and earlier. Treat these as version-scoped cache requirements, not evidence that adding RAM will improve a particular workload. See QNAP’s cache acceleration requirements.

How to decide what to upgrade next

  1. Identify the bottleneck. Note which task is slow and whether it involves repeated random access, large sequential transfers, or signs of memory pressure. Do not infer the cause from the presence of a cache alone.
  2. Check cache fit and size. For Synology, use SSD Cache Advisor to estimate whether a cache suits the workload and its likely size. Synology says the initial analysis takes at least 7 days and ends automatically after 30 days. A bigger cache is not automatically faster: size around frequently accessed data, since excess capacity does not guarantee improved performance.
  3. Verify memory support. Look up the exact NAS model and its supported memory configuration before buying RAM. A model-specific recommendation cannot be made without that information.
  4. Verify SSD compatibility and cache mode. Check the drive against the model’s compatibility list and follow the model-specific setup guidance. The mode affects what the cache contains, so it also affects safe removal.

Take care before removing or changing a cache

Do not assume cache removal is risk-free. Synology distinguishes read-only cache, which holds copies of data, from read-write cache, which may contain new writes before they are synchronized to the storage volume. Its cache failure guidance describes recovery steps that depend on cache and volume status. Follow the instructions for the specific NAS and DSM version rather than pulling a drive or changing the configuration blindly.

What this experience can—and cannot—show

An SSD cache that did not improve performance is a reason to reassess workload fit and the actual bottleneck, not proof that RAM would have solved everything. A useful comparison starts with observed memory pressure versus storage I/O, the workload’s access pattern, the size of its frequently reused data, and compatibility with the exact model and software version. Only measurements from that NAS can establish which change would help.
