Hunter-gatherers were not perfectly equal, and farming did not instantly create a sharply unequal society. Ethnographic studies find moderate differences in several kinds of wealth among living forager populations. Archaeological evidence, meanwhile, shows that early farming communities varied: some households differed in productive resources or status even when access to staple foods remained broadly similar. More persistent inequality generally emerged later, alongside changes in production, settlement size and political organization.
Were hunter-gatherers egalitarian?
Not in the sense that every person or household had the same resources, influence or prospects. A 2010 ethnographic comparison by Eric Alden Smith and colleagues found moderate inequality for most measured wealth types among the hunter-gatherer populations studied, as well as low-to-moderate transmission of wealth between generations. The measures included bodily condition and skills, material possessions, and relationships or social connections.
That finding challenges the idea that foragers were uniformly equal, but it is not a direct census of prehistoric societies. The study concerns ethnographically documented living populations, whose environments and histories differ from those of ancient hunter-gatherers. It cannot establish a single level of inequality for all foragers across time and place.
Archaeologists can also compare house sizes at sites where buildings survive. A 2024 analysis by Turchin and colleagues summarized 121 pre- or nonfarming sites with a mean house-size Gini coefficient of 0.22 and a standard deviation of 0.11. This is a summary of that study’s sample, not a universal estimate for hunter-gatherer societies. House size is a proxy for household resources, not a complete record of wealth or social power.

Did farming create inequality?
Farming made some forms of accumulation possible: crops could be stored, productive land could differ in quality or access, and investment in fields or equipment could create advantages. But the transition to food production was not a single switch from equality to hierarchy. Early farmers did not everywhere develop durable wealth differences immediately, and communities that farmed could organize resources in different ways.
A 2024 PNAS analysis by Turchin and colleagues examined more than 1,100 archaeological sites and more than 47,000 residential units across more than 10,000 years. In its sample, persistent wealth inequality typically lagged the point when plant cultivation became locally common by more than a millennium. A separate 2025 PNAS study by Bogaard and colleagues examined six cases during the first 2,000 years after transitions involving husbandry, horticulture and/or agriculture. Its cases likewise do not support a simple, uniform rise in inequality during those first two millennia.

These findings describe patterns across archaeological samples, not a timetable that every society followed. The house-size analysis also found regional differences: post-Neolithic wealth disparities followed distinct trajectories in Eurasia compared with North and Mesoamerica.
What changed as inequality grew?
Production constraints shaped the opportunity to accumulate
How food was produced mattered as much as whether people farmed. In a labor-limited system, where production depends heavily on work that is difficult to expand, advantages may be harder to convert into control over much more output. In land-limited extensive farming, access to productive land can become a stronger constraint and a source of accumulating advantage. The Çatalhöyük researchers describe this contrast as a pattern proposed in the literature, not a universal rule: local ecology, technology and social arrangements can change the outcome.

Settlement and political scale affected persistence
The 2024 archaeological analysis associates persistent inequality with growth in polity population and area, and with settlement hierarchies. As communities grow and become more politically organized, older ways of limiting the accumulation of advantage may weaken. The association does not mean that population growth alone caused inequality; settlement structure and production conditions also matter.
Why early farming communities did not all look alike
Çatalhöyük: household differences alongside shared staples
Çatalhöyük, a large Neolithic settlement in central Anatolia, illustrates why household differences should not automatically be treated as a settled class system. A 2024 multi-measure study by Katheryn C. Twiss and colleagues examined differences in house decoration, nonlocal prestige items, numbers of people buried beneath floors, grinding capacity and storage. The analyzed data did not show differential access to staple plant foods.

The researchers found no single inequality trajectory across those measures and no evidence for lasting, institutionalized inequality at the site. Interpretation also has limits: burning and abandonment practices can affect what is left in houses and how deposits should be understood. As the authors caution, measured dissimilarities do not by themselves prove a hierarchical social order.
The study discusses Neolithic southwest Asian agropastoralists within the period approximately 10,200–6,000 BP (9,700–5,300 cal BCE). That range describes the paper’s regional chronological scope, not a date range for every early farming society.

How to read archaeological evidence of wealth
There is no single archaeological measure that captures wealth, food security, status, inheritance and political power at once. Each proxy answers a narrower question:
- House size can show differences in residential space, but it is not a surviving household balance sheet.
- Storage and productive equipment can indicate capacity to preserve or produce resources, but do not alone show who controlled them or for how long.
- Burial goods and household deposits can reflect status or possessions, but ritual choices and the circumstances of abandonment can also shape what survives.
- Dietary evidence can help compare access to foods, but equal access to staple foods does not establish equality in prestige goods, labor, land or influence.
A Gini coefficient compresses a distribution into one summary of how uneven it is. The same coefficient can result from different underlying patterns, and it says nothing by itself about the cause or social meaning of the measured differences. For that reason, house-size Ginis and other proxies are starting points for interpretation, not direct measurements of a complete social hierarchy.
The key difference was not simply foraging versus farming
The evidence points away from two easy stories: that all hunter-gatherers shared everything equally, or that farming immediately produced class society. Foragers could differ in material, embodied and relational wealth; early farmers could differ in productive capacity and status while retaining broad access to staples. More enduring disparities were associated with how resources could be accumulated, the scale and organization of settlements, and whether social arrangements allowed advantages to persist.
