A simple build can play recorded phrases; a more capable project can send audio and vision tasks to a connected PC. If you want a ready-made programmable humanoid instead, Hiwonder sells Tonybot in several package variants, with features described by the manufacturer.
What “talking robot with Arduino” can mean
The phrase covers two different projects: building a robot that plays speech or responds to a computer-based voice system, and buying a programmable humanoid that supports Arduino. These are not equivalent approaches. A prerecorded message triggered by a sensor is not generative AI, and a robot that accepts Arduino programming does not necessarily run speech recognition or conversation on its Arduino board.
Before choosing, decide whether you want to assemble and program a project, or start with a packaged robot. Then check how speech is produced, what kind of movement and body you want, which sensors and computing hardware are included, and what the complete current cost will be. Available project and product descriptions do not establish a controlled performance or price comparison.
DIY example: CHAD uses Arduino for movement and a PC for AI
Arduino’s December 5, 2023 description of CHAD presents a humanoid torso with moving arms, face tracking, voice-assistant abilities, spoken responses, and chatbot-style conversation. Its head follows a face, while its arms gesture rather than lift objects. The key design point is that the Arduino boards do not run the heavy AI processing: Python scripts on a PC handle face recognition, voice recognition, and voice synthesis, then send movement commands to the Arduino boards over serial. The project uses two Arduino UNO R3 boards, hobby servos, L298N motor drivers, and a PC power supply. One Arduino controls most servo movement; the other focuses on face tracking. The body and much of the mechanical structure can be 3D printed, with lengths of wood used for the frame. Arduino reported a project budget of ₹5000 (about $60 USD) in 2023; that is a dated, project-specific figure, not a current quote or typical build cost. Arduino Project Hub’s 2024 CHAD page lists two Arduino Uno Rev3 boards, an L298N motor driver, MG996R and MG90 servos, a USB microphone, and a USB camera, and links to STL files and documentation. Its “₹5000 worth of parts” subtitle is likewise a maker-reported project amount, not an independent cost survey. CHAD files and project details
What this architecture means for a build
- Arduino controls physical outputs such as servos and can work with sensors.
- A connected computer runs the described recognition and voice-synthesis scripts; it is part of the system, not an optional detail if you want CHAD’s full AI features.
- The torso form and gesture-focused arms are different from a walking, multi-joint humanoid.
Simpler option: play prerecorded speech from an SD card
Arduino Project Hub’s “Easy Talking Humanoid Robot!” project, published September 28, 2020, describes a simpler arrangement: store audio on an SD card and trigger playback in response to sensor interactions. Its listed parts include an Arduino Nano, an IR range sensor, an SD-card TF module, an SG90 micro-servo, a small speaker, batteries, voltage regulators, body materials, and wiring. The project author says speech synthesis did not produce understandable results on Arduino in that build, so the robot uses prerecorded audio instead. That experience describes this particular maker project, not every Arduino board or speech-synthesis setup. Easy Talking Humanoid Robot project

This approach is suitable when you want a small robot to say fixed phrases—for example, a greeting when a sensor detects someone. It does not, by itself, understand a spoken question or compose a new answer. Build complexity is still determined by the project’s wiring, power requirements, enclosure, and code; the component list is a starting point, not a guaranteed compatible bill of materials for every variation.

Hiwonder describes Tonybot as a programmable educational humanoid that supports Arduino, Scratch, and Python. The manufacturer advertises voice interaction and AI vision functions, describes a 17-joint platform, and offers standard, advanced, and ultimate package variants. These are vendor claims, not independently verified test results; features and included parts can vary by package. Check the selected package’s contents, current price, stock, and exact capabilities on Hiwonder’s Tonybot product page before buying.

Choose a DIY build if…
- You want to learn wiring, servo control, sensing, and mechanical construction.
- You are comfortable with the distinction between fixed prerecorded audio and a PC-powered voice system.
- You can account for the full project—including power, structure, computing hardware where needed, and compatible parts—rather than relying on a historical project budget.
Choose a packaged kit if…
- You prefer a defined product and learning resources over designing the entire mechanism yourself.
- You want to evaluate an advertised multi-joint humanoid platform, while confirming which features and parts belong to the package you select.
- You are prepared to verify current price and availability directly with the seller; no like-for-like cost comparison is established.
