After a 30-minute hands-on with Huawei’s MateBook Fold, TechRadar’s Prakhar Khanna found the foldable laptop more practical to carry and use than he expected. It opens into an 18-inch display and folds down to a 13-inch screen, with a detachable magnetic keyboard for conventional typing. That makes the form factor compelling; it does not yet prove that foldable laptops are the future. The hands-on did not test battery life, performance, long-term durability, or compatibility with specific apps and peripherals.
What the MateBook Fold is
The MateBook Fold is a laptop built around one flexible display rather than a conventional screen and fixed keyboard. Unfolded, the display measures 18 inches; folded, it presents a 13-inch screen. Huawei’s current product information describes a dual-layer OLED panel, while the 2025 hands-on describes the device Khanna handled. Those descriptions should not be treated as proof that every current specification matches the original review unit.
In his 5 October 2025 TechRadar hands-on, Khanna summed up the portability as “Carrying the Huawei MateBook Fold is like carrying a big book with a nice cover but without the heft. It’s big but not bulky.” That is his impression after a short session, not a measured comparison with other laptops.
How the foldable screen and keyboard work
One screen, two working sizes
The key appeal is changing from a compact folded screen to a larger, single 18-inch workspace by opening the computer. Huawei’s current specifications list a 3.3K resolution and peak brightness of 1,600 nits. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements from the hands-on. The available account does not assess the visibility of the crease, color accuracy, or screen performance in different lighting.

Magnetic keyboard and touch use
The thin external keyboard attaches magnetically to the back, according to Khanna, who said the magnets held it securely during his session. He found the touchscreen gestures responsive and did not miss Windows while trying the on-screen keyboard. The keyboard is reported to have 1.5mm key travel and a pressure-sensitive touchpad. These are useful first impressions, not a long-term typing assessment.
Huawei’s current specification page also lists a portable keyboard with 1.5mm key travel. It names an M-Pen 3 stylus and a foldable-computer carry case among the package contents, but that page may describe a later or refreshed configuration rather than the precise 2025 unit Khanna handled.

The weight figures make the keyboard an important part of any portability comparison: the computer alone and the computer ready for typing are not the same carry weight. The two USB-C ports also mean that users who rely on other wired connections may need a compatible hub; the hands-on does not establish compatibility with any particular hub or peripheral.
HarmonyOS, not Windows
The MateBook Fold runs Huawei’s HarmonyOS rather than Windows. Huawei’s current specification page lists HarmonyOS 6.1, but that should not be retroactively assigned to the unit from Khanna’s 2025 session. His brief experience with touchscreen gestures and the on-screen keyboard is not a test of whether a particular Windows application, work workflow, accessory, or regional service will work.

What the 2025 China launch price tells you—and what it does not
Gadgets 360 reported Huawei’s China launch on 19 May 2025, with the 32GB/1TB model priced at CNY 23,999 and the 32GB/2TB model at CNY 26,999; sales were expected to begin on 6 June. IT Home reported on 6 June that sales in China had started at those same prices. These are historical China-market launch prices, not current quotes or evidence of local availability elsewhere.

Huawei’s currently surfaced specifications include a Kirin X90 Plus processor, 24GB or 32GB of memory, and 512GB, 1TB, or 2TB storage options. Because the current page may describe a refreshed configuration, those options should not be assumed to describe Khanna’s review unit. Current price, local stock, warranty coverage for imports, and distribution in a reader’s market are not established here.

- Battery life: Khanna says he could not test the device’s power credentials. Huawei currently lists a 74.69Wh battery, but that capacity does not establish real-world runtime.
- Performance: No benchmark results or sustained workload testing are reported.
- Durability: Huawei describes UTG ultra-thin glass, a water-drop hinge, and screen impact resistance on its product page. Those are manufacturer descriptions; the hands-on does not independently test impact resistance, crease development, repairability, or hinge lifespan.
- App and accessory support: The brief session does not verify specific software, work tools, or peripherals on HarmonyOS.
Huawei’s current page also lists Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, six speakers, four microphones, an 8MP front camera, and a 140W adapter in the package. Treat these as current manufacturer-listed details, not independently tested findings or confirmed contents for every regional sale.
Is the MateBook Fold the future of mobile computing?
Khanna’s optimism is best read as a reaction to the form factor: in his hands, a large screen that folded into a portable shape and could be paired with a magnetic keyboard felt more usable than he had expected. That is a persuasive reason to watch foldable computers, not evidence that they are ready to replace conventional laptops for every user.
The practical decision depends on whether a 13-inch folded screen and 18-inch unfolded workspace suit your day, whether HarmonyOS supports your actual software and accessories, and whether a local seller can provide acceptable price and warranty terms. The hands-on supports interest in the design; battery life, long-term durability, performance, compatibility, and current regional availability remain unanswered.
