To add a fingerprint on a Huawei phone, open Settings > Biometrics & password > Fingerprint ID, enter your lock-screen password, and choose New fingerprint or the model-specific New rear fingerprint. Follow the prompts, lifting and repositioning your finger between touches. Menu names can vary by model and EMUI version.

How do I add a new fingerprint on a Huawei phone?

Use the fingerprint settings to enroll a finger; the phone asks for the lock-screen password first. Keep the finger and sensor clean and dry, and make small changes to your fingertip’s position as you follow the prompts. The main route is Settings > Biometrics & password > Fingerprint ID. On some phones, the next screen is called Fingerprint management. Treat these names as variations in Huawei’s menu, rather than evidence that the feature is somewhere entirely different.

Before starting, make sure you can enter the phone’s lock-screen password. Fingerprint enrollment is protected by that password, so knowing the password is part of the setup—not an optional step that can be skipped. Also identify where the sensor is on your particular phone: it may be in the display or on the phone’s body. The screen prompts and sensor location tell you where to place your finger.

  1. Open Settings. Start from the phone’s Settings app rather than looking for a separate fingerprint app.
  2. Tap Biometrics & password. This is the settings category to check for fingerprint controls.
  3. Tap Fingerprint ID. If the next screen shows Fingerprint management, open it to reach the saved-fingerprint controls.
  4. Enter or confirm your lock-screen password when prompted. If you cannot satisfy this prompt, you cannot continue through the normal enrollment flow.
  5. Tap New fingerprint. Some phones with a rear sensor instead show New rear fingerprint. Choose the new-fingerprint option displayed on your phone.
  6. Touch the fingerprint sensor with the finger you want to enroll. For an in-screen sensor, use the area indicated on the display; for a physical sensor, use the sensor built into the phone.
  7. When the phone vibrates, lift your finger, then touch the sensor again. The vibration is the cue to release and make another contact, rather than keep your fingertip pressed in place.
  8. Repeat as prompted, shifting your finger slightly between touches so the phone can capture different parts of the print. Small position changes help the phone register more of the finger than repeated contact in exactly the same spot.
  9. Follow any remaining on-screen instructions and tap OK if it appears.

Enrollment is complete when the phone confirms that the fingerprint has been added. If the phone continues to show instructions, keep following them instead of leaving the screen early. Huawei says enrolled fingerprints can be used to unlock the screen and, on supported devices, access features such as Safe and App Lock.

What to do while the phone is reading your finger

Think of enrollment as a series of separate touches, not one long press. Place the fingertip on the sensor, wait for the phone’s vibration or prompt, lift, and place it again with a small change in position. The phone needs contacts from different portions of the print, so keep adjusting the fingertip as directed. Do not move to another finger midway through an enrollment; the process is intended to capture the finger you selected.

Use the on-screen directions as the authority for that device. If a prompt indicates that the sensor is on the display, touch the indicated part of the screen. If your phone has a rear or another physical sensor, use the built-in sensor instead. Huawei models do not all use the same sensor placement or button wording, so an instruction written for a different model may not describe the physical location on your phone.

Where is Fingerprint ID in Huawei settings?

Start at Settings > Biometrics & password and look for Fingerprint ID. Depending on the phone, you may need to open Fingerprint management before you can add a print. The menu can be nested one level further, but the central place to begin is the biometrics settings.

Huawei’s menu labels are not identical across models and software versions. Fingerprint management, New fingerprint and New rear fingerprint are possible variations, not signs that you have taken a wrong step. Regional Huawei support pages cover different device families and EMUI versions, including newer models documented with EMUI 14.0, 14.2 and 15.0, as well as older devices on EMUI 13.0. For example, the documented device families include Mate X3, nova 12i, Mate X6, nova 14 Pro and Mate X7, alongside older models such as nova 10, P50, P50 Pro and Mate 40 Pro. These examples illustrate why a menu label or path shown for one Huawei phone should not be assumed to match every other one.

If the names on your screen differ, look for the fingerprint option under the biometrics settings rather than relying on an exact label from another model’s instructions. The exact model and EMUI version matter when checking device-specific support information. Regional documentation can also cover different sets of devices. Do not assume that a missing button on one model proves that all Huawei phones use a different route; first check the instructions for your exact device.

Does the enrollment process change with the sensor location?

The settings route is broadly similar, but the physical sensor location changes where you place your finger and which enrollment label may appear. The useful comparison is not a different general setup procedure; it is the sensor location, the label shown on the screen, and the prompts provided by that particular phone.

Device variation What to look for What to do during enrollment
In-screen sensor The display may show the sensor area after you lift or wake the phone. Touch the indicated area, lift after vibration, and repeat while changing the fingertip position.
Rear or other physical sensor The sensor is built into the phone; some rear-sensor models use the label New rear fingerprint. Touch the built-in sensor and follow the phone’s lift-and-touch prompts.
Different EMUI version or model family The route may include Fingerprint management, and button names can vary. Begin under Biometrics & password and follow the labels available on that device.

In-screen fingerprint sensor

On an in-screen model, the phone may show the sensor area on the display after you lift or wake it. Touch the indicated area, lift your finger when the phone vibrates, and repeat while adjusting the position of your fingertip. Keep the screen and fingertip clean and dry. A film over the display can be relevant here: Huawei warns that a non-official privacy film, hydrogel film or tempered-glass film may interfere with the sensor signal. If enrollment is unsuccessful, see the troubleshooting steps below before repeatedly trying the same sequence through a film that may be affecting the sensor.

Rear or other physical sensor

Touch the sensor built into the phone’s body. Some rear-sensor models label the enrollment option New rear fingerprint; other models may use the more general New fingerprint. The wording is model-dependent. Once you reach the enrollment prompts, the repeated-touch method remains the same: touch, lift when prompted, shift position slightly, and touch again.

What can I use an enrolled fingerprint for?

A saved fingerprint can unlock the screen. Depending on the device and software support, it may also be available for Safe and App Lock. Those additional uses are not guaranteed to appear on every model, so check the options offered on your phone rather than assuming that every feature is available everywhere.

Fingerprint payment verification is set up within the relevant payment app, not from the fingerprint enrollment screen. Adding a print to the phone establishes the fingerprint for supported device functions; it does not, by itself, configure payment verification in an app. If payment verification is your goal, open the relevant payment application and use its own settings and prompts.

Huawei’s official support wording says an enrolled fingerprint can be used to “unlock the screen and access your Safe, App Lock, and more.” The exact capabilities depend on support in the device and software. Enrollment is therefore the starting point for supported fingerprint functions, not a guarantee that every Huawei feature or third-party application will accept a fingerprint.

Why can’t I enroll a fingerprint or unlock the phone?

Start with the setting, finger and sensor before assuming the reader is faulty. Check these common causes in order. They address both an enrollment attempt that will not complete and a saved fingerprint that does not unlock the phone reliably.

  • Fingerprint unlock is unavailable or switched off: Check whether Fingerprint ID appears under Settings > Biometrics & password, then confirm that the device-unlock fingerprint option is enabled. If your phone uses a management screen, inspect the fingerprint controls there. A saved print and the device-unlock option are related but distinct settings to verify.
  • The finger or sensor is dirty or damp: Clean and dry both, then try enrollment or recognition again. Moisture, grime or stains can interfere with the sensor. If your finger or sensor becomes damp or dirty during setup, pause and address that condition before continuing.
  • A screen film is interfering with an in-screen sensor: A non-official privacy film, hydrogel film or tempered-glass film may affect the sensor signal. Huawei recommends removing it or replacing it with an official film before trying to enroll again. This advice concerns in-screen sensors; it is not a reason to change a rear sensor’s setup route.
  • The saved print is not being recognized reliably: Delete the saved fingerprints and enroll them again. Huawei says re-enrollment can improve the unlocking experience. During the new enrollment, follow the prompts and vary the position of the finger between touches rather than repeating the same placement.
  • The phone has restarted or a security condition applies: Huawei may require the lock-screen password before fingerprint unlock becomes available again after a restart, a system update or certain security conditions. Enter the password when requested; a password prompt in these circumstances does not necessarily mean that the fingerprint has been erased.

Work through the checks that match the symptom. If the fingerprint option is present but recognition is poor, begin with cleanliness, film compatibility where applicable, and re-enrollment. If the phone requests the password after a restart, update or security condition, provide it. If the setting itself is missing, verify the exact model’s support information rather than following a menu path for a different device.

If the issue persists after these checks, back up the device’s data and contact an authorized Huawei Customer Service Center. Bring the phone and proof of purchase. Huawei’s support guidance recommends escalation to an authorized center when the standard checks do not resolve the problem. Do not treat repeated failed attempts as a substitute for service if the problem remains unresolved.

How should I handle differences between Huawei models?

Use the menu and prompts shown on your own phone as the final guide. Huawei support documentation spans different device families, regions and EMUI versions, so a path or button name shown for one model may not match another exactly. Model, sensor placement and software are the useful comparison points when the procedure looks different.

  • Choose the available new-fingerprint option, whether it says New fingerprint or New rear fingerprint.
  • Identify whether the sensor is in the display or on the phone’s body, then use that sensor.
  • Follow the sensor prompts for your phone’s placement and lift-and-touch pattern.
  • If you have an in-screen sensor, consider film compatibility if enrollment or recognition is failing.
  • Remember that a restart, system update or certain security conditions can lead to a password prompt before fingerprint unlock works again.

If the fingerprint setting is missing or the available steps do not match your device, consult Huawei support information for the exact model and region rather than treating instructions for another Huawei phone as universal. The listed EMUI versions and models show that support material is not one-size-fits-all. The menu may be nested differently, and the enrollment label may change with sensor placement, but the first place to look remains the biometrics settings.

Does adding a fingerprint require a separate accessory or app?

The enrollment procedure is performed in the phone’s settings and uses the phone’s fingerprint sensor. The setup described here does not call for a separate fingerprint accessory, generic cleaning kit, repair part or manual. An in-screen film can affect sensor recognition, but buying a particular film is not a prerequisite for ordinary enrollment. If an existing film is suspected of interfering, Huawei’s guidance is to remove it or replace it with an official film before trying again.

Likewise, adding a fingerprint is not the same as enabling payment verification or configuring every app. The phone’s enrollment process handles the supported fingerprint record; relevant apps manage their own functions. If a sensor seems persistently defective after the basic checks, the appropriate next step is authorized Huawei service rather than an unrelated product or an unsupported do-it-yourself repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many fingerprints can I add to a Huawei phone?

There is no one limit established here that applies to every Huawei model. Check the support documentation for your exact device to confirm its limit; do not assume a number from another model applies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I add a fingerprint if I have not set a lock-screen password?

No. Huawei’s enrollment flow requires you to enter or confirm the lock-screen password before adding a fingerprint. Set up the phone’s screen lock first if the prompt cannot be satisfied.

Why does my Huawei phone ask for a password instead of accepting my fingerprint?

Huawei may require the lock-screen password after a restart, a system update or certain security conditions. Enter the password when prompted; fingerprint unlocking may become available again afterward.

Where is Fingerprint ID in Huawei settings?

Start at Settings > Biometrics & password and look for Fingerprint ID. Some models place the enrollment controls under Fingerprint management.

Why can’t I find New fingerprint?

Menu wording varies by model, sensor placement and EMUI version. Look for New rear fingerprint on some rear-sensor models, or open Fingerprint management if that option appears.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why won’t my Huawei phone finish fingerprint enrollment?

Check that your finger and sensor are clean and dry, then follow the prompts by lifting after vibration and changing your fingertip position between touches. For an in-screen sensor, a non-official privacy, hydrogel or tempered-glass film may interfere; Huawei recommends removing it or replacing it with an official film before enrolling again.

What should I do if my Huawei fingerprint still does not work after re-enrolling?

Back up your data and contact an authorized Huawei Customer Service Center if cleaning, checking any relevant screen film and re-enrollment do not resolve the issue. Bring the phone and proof of purchase.

Can I use a fingerprint for Huawei payment verification after enrolling it?

Payment verification is configured in the relevant payment app, not on the fingerprint enrollment screen. The app and device must support the function.

The Bottom Line

To add a Huawei fingerprint, open Settings > Biometrics & password > Fingerprint ID, enter your lock-screen password, and follow the prompts under New fingerprint or the label shown on your model. Lift and reposition your finger between touches. If enrollment or unlocking remains unreliable, check cleanliness and in-screen film compatibility, re-enroll, and contact an authorized Huawei Customer Service Center if the problem persists.
