HTTP success status codes are the 2xx range (200–299). The class means a request was successfully received, understood, and accepted, but a 2xx response does not always mean that the requested work is finished. The specific code—and sometimes the request method—determines what happened.
What does HTTP 2xx mean?
In HTTP, the first digit of a status code identifies its class. The 2xx class is for successful responses. RFC 9110 defines it as indicating that the client’s request “was successfully received, understood, and accepted.” See RFC 9110, section 15.3.
That class-level definition is not a promise that every operation has finished or that every response contains a body. Read the individual status code to understand the outcome.
How do the common HTTP success codes differ?
| Status | What it communicates | Response and request details |
|---|---|---|
| 200 OK | The request succeeded. | Meaning depends on the method. For GET, the response represents the target resource; for HEAD, it carries corresponding representation metadata without the representation data. For POST, it reports the action’s status or result; for PUT and DELETE, it reports the action’s status. |
| 201 Created | One or more resources were created. | The primary created resource is identified by the Location field, or by the target URI if no Location field is sent. |
| 202 Accepted | The request was accepted for processing, but processing is incomplete. | Acceptance does not guarantee that the work will be performed or succeed. A response should describe the request’s status and, where appropriate, point to a status monitor. |
| 204 No Content | The request succeeded and there is no content to send. | There can still be useful response headers. |
| 205 Reset Content | The user agent should reset the document view that issued the request. | This is a distinct instruction, not simply another way to say that a response has no content. |
| 206 Partial Content | A range request returned the requested part or parts of a representation. | The response is partial, not a full transfer. |
These definitions follow RFC 9110. For a broader list of codes, including specialized ones, see MDN’s HTTP response status codes reference.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why does 200 OK depend on the request method?
“OK” means success, but it does not specify one universal response shape. With GET, a 200 response represents the target resource. With HEAD, the server sends metadata corresponding to a representation but not the representation data. With POST, 200 reports the action’s status or result; with PUT or DELETE, it reports the status of that action. Therefore, 200 does not always mean “the server returned the resource body.”
Does 202 Accepted mean the operation is complete?
No. RFC 9110 says 202 means the request has been accepted for processing, but processing has not been completed. It may not ultimately be acted on, and HTTP does not provide a way for the later asynchronous operation to send a status code back through that original response. The server should explain the request’s current status and, when appropriate, give the client a way to monitor it.

For example, an API might respond to a request to start a long-running task with 202 and information about where to check its status. That response confirms acceptance, not eventual success.
When should a response have no content?
Use 204 when the successful response has no content
204 communicates success without response content. It does not mean that the response has no useful information at all: headers may still convey relevant metadata.

Use 205 when the user agent should reset the view
205 communicates that the user agent should reset the document view that issued the request. Its meaning is not interchangeable with 204’s no-content result.
What does 206 Partial Content mean?
206 is used for a range request when the server returns the requested part or parts of a representation rather than the complete representation. It describes a partial transfer, not ordinary delivery of the whole resource.
