HTMLCSStoImage supports PNG, JPEG (its API uses jpg), and WebP for raster images. If you omit the format, the returned URL serves PNG. The key detail is that raster renders are stored as PNG; requesting a .jpg or .webp URL converts that stored image when it is served. The format setting changes the returned URL extension, not the stored image definition.
Which image formats does HTMLCSStoImage support?
The API supports png, jpg, webp, and pdf. This comparison focuses on the three raster formats. PDF follows a separate render-and-save path, so it is not another image encoding choice within the PNG/JPEG/WebP comparison. Format values are case-insensitive. Use the API spelling jpg and the path extension .jpg, even though JPEG is the usual name for the format in prose.
Does the format choice change the stored image?
No. HTMLCSStoImage says that the format parameter only changes the URL returned by the creation request; it does not change the stored image definition or lock the image to one format. A single image ID can later be requested with another supported extension. The vendor’s changelog says the request-body format option was introduced on August 27, 2026, and applies to HTML/CSS images, URL screenshots, saved-template images, and image batches.

How should you choose between PNG, JPEG, and WebP?
Choose PNG when
You want the API’s default output and do not need to specify a converted format. Because raster renders are stored as PNG, requesting PNG also avoids asking for the JPG or WebP serving conversion. The documentation does not publish a controlled comparison of the formats’ file sizes, visual quality, or response speed.
Choose JPEG (jpg) when
A consuming system specifically expects JPEG or a .jpg file path. HTMLCSStoImage serves this by converting the stored PNG. The available documentation does not quantify the resulting file size, image quality, or conversion time for equivalent renders.

Choose WebP when
Your downstream workflow accepts WebP and you want that format delivered. At the format level, WebP supports lossy and lossless compression, alpha transparency, and animation, according to IETF RFC 9649. Those are general WebP capabilities, not a measured description of HTMLCSStoImage’s converted output. The API documentation does not establish that its WebP result is smaller, faster, or visually better than its PNG or JPG result for a particular image.
Decide based on your actual pipeline
Start with the format your destination accepts and the requirements it imposes. If file size, appearance, or latency is decisive, render equivalent content and compare the served files in your own workflow; the vendor’s documentation supplies no universal winner or API-specific savings figure. Since the stored image definition is not locked to the requested extension, you can request another supported extension for the same image ID if your needs change.

Set the API’s format option to png, jpg, or webp in the request body. The option determines the extension in the returned URL; omitting it uses the default PNG behavior. Consult the format parameter reference for the current request schema and image retrieval details.
