HTML form controls such as text fields, checkboxes, and select menus collect data in the browser. In ASP.NET Core Razor views, HTML Helpers and Tag Helpers can generate the form markup that connects those controls to a model and a server action. This guide focuses on those browser controls and ASP.NET Core 10 form helpers; it does not cover ASP.NET Web Forms User Controls, which are a separate framework concept.
What are HTML form controls?
HTML form controls are browser elements through which people enter, select, or submit information. A <form> groups controls for submission, while the control attributes and form configuration determine which values are sent and how. The current WHATWG HTML Standard describes controls including text inputs, buttons, checkboxes, range inputs, and color pickers. Many forms work without client-side scripting.
Choose a control for the kind of answer
- Single-line input: Use an
<input>with an appropriate type for short values such as a name or email address. - Longer free-form text: Use
<textarea>, which allows multi-line entry. - One choice from a set: Use a select menu or a radio group, depending on how the options should be presented.
- Independent yes/no or multiple choices: Use checkboxes when each option can be selected independently.
- File selection or submission actions: Use a file input or a button suited to the task.
Controls do not all submit values in the same way. Form submission depends on the form and control semantics and attributes, including whether a control has a name and whether it is successful for that submission.
How do you make controls accessible?
Give each control an accessible name. For ordinary inputs, connect a visible <label> to the control using matching for and id values:

<label for="email">Email address</label>

Do not rely on placeholder text as the only label: a placeholder is not a substitute for a persistent label. Some controls, such as buttons, can derive their accessible name from their text content or alternative text. W3C WAI Technique H91 explains that browsers provide keyboard operation for native form controls and expose their role, name, state, and value through accessibility APIs: W3C H91.
What are ASP.NET Core HTML Helpers?
HTML Helpers are APIs used in Razor views through Html to generate HTML or related view output. Their behavior depends on the helper and framework version. In ASP.NET Core 10, for example, Html.BeginForm creates a form start tag and returns an MvcForm object that writes the closing </form> tag when disposed.

Render a form with Html.BeginForm
A typical Razor pattern uses a using block so the returned form object is disposed after the form contents:
@using (Html.BeginForm("Save", "Profile", FormMethod.Post))
{
<label for="displayName">Display name</label>
@Html.TextBox("displayName")
<button type="submit">Save</button>
}
The overload you choose controls how the action URL, controller, route values, HTTP method, and HTML attributes are specified. ASP.NET Core’s BeginForm API reference documents overloads and an antiforgery option. For that option, a null value includes an antiforgery token, true includes one, and false suppresses it. Do not assume the same behavior for every overload: confirm the overload and the receiving action’s validation behavior.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor model-bound fields, the strongly typed helpers Html.TextBoxFor and Html.EditorFor take expressions against a model. The untyped Html.TextBox and Html.Editor helpers instead use expression names.
How do Tag Helpers differ from HTML Helpers?
Tag Helpers add server-side behavior to familiar HTML-shaped Razor markup through attributes such as asp-for, asp-action, and asp-controller. HTML Helpers call methods such as Html.BeginForm or Html.TextBoxFor. They overlap, but Microsoft states that Tag Helpers do not replace HTML Helpers and there is not a Tag Helper for every helper.

| Choice | How it is written | Binding and generated markup | Useful distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native HTML | Elements such as <form>, <input>, and <select> |
You specify the markup and attributes directly. | Browser-native semantics and behavior; it does not by itself apply Razor model metadata. |
| HTML Helpers | Razor method calls such as Html.BeginForm, Html.TextBoxFor, or Html.EditorFor |
Model-expression helpers can generate markup using the model expression; exact behavior depends on the helper. | Editor and EditorFor can work with collections, complex objects, and templates. |
| Tag Helpers | HTML-shaped Razor markup with attributes such as asp-for and asp-action |
The Input Tag Helper uses model metadata to generate attributes such as id, name, input type, and validation attributes, unless an explicit type takes precedence. |
The Input Tag Helper overlaps with Html.TextBoxFor and Html.EditorFor, but does not provide their collection, complex-object, and template support. |
See Microsoft’s ASP.NET Core forms documentation for Tag Helper behavior and examples. The Input Tag Helper binds an input to a model expression and can derive the input type from model metadata; the TextBox helpers do not do that automatically.
How do form routing and antiforgery work?
The form needs an action URL and method, while the server needs to handle the request at a matching endpoint. Html.BeginForm uses URL generation and offers overloads for current or explicit actions and controllers, route values, method, and HTML attributes. Form Tag Helpers provide a markup-oriented alternative: asp-controller and asp-action specify routing information, and the Form Tag Helper can generate the action URL and a hidden request verification token.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a POST protected against cross-site request forgery, token generation alone is not the whole check: the receiving action must validate the token, for example with [ValidateAntiForgeryToken]. Follow the ASP.NET Core form documentation for the specific setup and application behavior.
How should you style the controls?
CSS frameworks such as Bootstrap change presentation, not the meaning or submission behavior of native form elements. Bootstrap’s documentation describes .form-control styling for common text inputs, selects, and textareas, with separate styling for checkboxes and radio buttons: Bootstrap forms documentation. Keep native semantics and accessible labels when applying styles.
What does “User Control” mean in ASP.NET?
The phrase can refer to different things. A browser control such as <input> is an HTML form element. An ASP.NET MVC or ASP.NET Core HTML Helper is a view API that emits markup. ASP.NET Web Forms User Controls, by contrast, belong to a separate, older framework model; Microsoft’s reference describes server-side classes corresponding to HTML tags in its System.Web.UI.HtmlControls API reference. If you mean Web Forms User Controls specifically, use Web Forms documentation rather than treating them as MVC/Core HTML Helpers.
