For a one-off conversion, paste your HTML into PDF Edit or open an .html/.htm file there, choose page settings, and download the PDF; PDF Edit says conversion runs in your browser without uploading the file. For recurring conversions or a public webpage, use a hosted PDF API instead. The right choice depends chiefly on privacy, input type, rendering needs, and the service’s free limits.
Choose a converter based on what you need to convert
“HTML to PDF” can mean two different jobs: turning markup you already have into a document, or printing a webpage that is already online. Those jobs have different privacy and reliability trade-offs. A local browser converter is convenient for a single file and avoids sending the markup to a conversion server, according to the provider’s stated processing method. An API is a better fit when a program must generate PDFs repeatedly, or when the input is a webpage URL.
| Need | Starting point | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Convert one HTML file or pasted snippet | PDF Edit’s browser-based converter | Its publisher says files stay on the device; complex external assets still need to be reachable by the browser. |
| Generate PDFs repeatedly from HTML or a public URL | HTMLPDF.dev API | Automation is available, but the provider documents quota and rate limits. |
| Render a URL or dynamic HTML through an API | Adobe PDF Services API | It supports static or dynamic HTML, ZIP, and URL inputs; it is a hosted workflow rather than a local-only conversion. |
| Try a no-signup conversion | SelectPdf demo | The free demo is limited to five pages and adds a watermark. |
Free does not necessarily mean unlimited, private, or watermark-free. Check the individual service’s limits before converting a long document or confidential content.
Convert HTML code online in a browser
For a local file or pasted markup
- Open PDF Edit’s HTML-to-PDF converter.
- Paste the HTML into its editor or select the .html or .htm file you want to convert.
- Choose the page format—such as A4 or Letter—and set orientation and margins. If the page relies on background colors or images, enable print backgrounds if that option is available.
- Generate the PDF, inspect the result, and download it.
PDF Edit describes its converter as running “100% in your browser” and says conversion works offline and files never leave the device. Those are the publisher’s privacy claims, not an independent audit. This route is particularly useful when markup should not be submitted to a hosted API. It does not guarantee that every external image, font, or script will load: assets must still be accessible to the browser, and browser print behavior can differ from a screen view.

For a webpage that already has a URL
A browser’s print dialog can be enough for an occasional page: open the URL, wait for the page to finish rendering, choose Print, select Save as PDF, set paper size and margins, and save. This captures the page as rendered in that browser session; pages behind a login, pages that load content late, and sites that change layout for print may need adjustments. If you need repeatable server-side output, an API is a more suitable route.
Use an API for recurring HTML-to-PDF jobs
HTMLPDF.dev
HTMLPDF.dev accepts raw HTML or a URL through its documented POST /api/pdf endpoint, with format and margin parameters. Its documented free allowance is 100 PDFs per month, with a limit of 10 requests per hour (provider information accessed in 2026). The endpoint accepts either html or url, not both in the same request. Consult the provider’s current API documentation for the full request schema and authentication details; the base URL and complete parameter specification are not included here, so a guessed code sample would be unreliable.
Adobe PDF Services
Adobe’s official PDF Services API supports static or dynamic HTML, ZIP, and URL inputs, with REST and SDK references. This is a hosted API option when you need documented integration paths rather than a paste-and-download tool. Check Adobe’s current documentation for account requirements, authentication, pricing, and request examples; those details are not established here.

Other free endpoints and demos
The alternatives below illustrate why “free converter” is not a single capability or limit. Figures are provider-documented, not results of a comparative test.
Recommended Free Tools
| Service | Documented detail | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Ironfang | 256 KB maximum HTML payload, 30-second render timeout, and 20 renders per hour per address (2026). | HTML is sent to UK servers; Ironfang says it is discarded after rendering. Review retention, logging, and jurisdiction terms for sensitive documents. |
| PDFSpark | Unauthenticated API with Chromium rendering and a 5 MB maximum HTML payload (2026). | Check its current operational and data-handling terms before sending private content. |
| SelectPdf demo | No-signup demo capped at five pages and watermarked (2026). | Useful for a quick limited preview, not a clean multi-page deliverable. |
| H2P | Open-source REST option advertising permissive commercial use. | Review the project’s license and deployment requirements before using it commercially. |
Make the PDF match the page
Page size, margins, and orientation
Choose A4 or Letter according to the intended audience or print destination, and set margins deliberately. Large fixed-width content can extend past the printable area; reduce the width or use responsive sizing before exporting. For landscape tables or dashboards, landscape orientation may prevent columns from being clipped, but it also changes page composition.
Print CSS, colors, and page breaks
Web pages can use @media print rules that hide navigation, change typography, or rearrange content. That is often desirable for a document, but it can also make an element disappear unexpectedly. Background colors and images may be omitted unless print-background behavior is enabled. If the output differs from the on-screen page, inspect the print stylesheet and the converter’s background setting before changing the source markup.
Rank #3
JavaScript and external assets
Modern browser engines generally handle current CSS and JavaScript better than simple HTML parsers, but rendering still depends on timing and access. A chart drawn after page load, a lazy-loaded image, or a font hosted elsewhere may not be ready when PDF generation begins. Relative asset paths may fail if the renderer has no correct base URL, while private URLs or automated-request blocks can prevent images from loading. For consistent output, wait until dynamic content is ready and use reachable asset URLs or embed small resources when practical.
Privacy: local conversion or hosted rendering?
If the HTML contains private information, prefer a local converter whose processing model you have verified. PDF Edit says the conversion happens in-browser, works offline, and does not upload files. By contrast, Ironfang says submitted HTML is processed on UK servers and discarded after rendering. That statement describes Ironfang’s published handling claim; it does not establish how other hosted services process or retain data.
Before sending sensitive markup or a URL to any hosted service, review its retention and logging policy, processing location, and whether the input URL itself exposes private information. A public webpage URL can still include access tokens or other sensitive query data. Do not treat a service’s no-signup or free tier as evidence that it is private.

If what you need is a clean capture of a webpage rather than a pasted HTML source file, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It can return a screenshot or PDF. This cURL example uses the supplied screenshot request and saves its default image output; it is not a raw-HTML-to-PDF request. For PDF format and other options, use the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.

- Content is cut off: Check for fixed-width elements wider than the page. Reduce their width or add responsive sizing, then regenerate. For wide tables, try landscape orientation.
- The PDF is blank: Wait for client-side JavaScript to finish rendering. Confirm the page does not require a login or block automated requests; an inaccessible page may render without its visible content.
- Images or fonts are missing: Replace broken relative paths with paths that resolve from the rendered page, and verify that external resources are public and reachable to the converter. Private asset URLs may not work from a hosted renderer.
- Colors or backgrounds disappeared: Enable print backgrounds where available and inspect any
@media printrules that alter or hide content. - A request is rejected or takes too long: Check the input-size and rate limits for the service. Ironfang documents a 256 KB input limit, a 30-second render timeout, and 20 renders per hour per address; a large or slow page may exceed those limits.
- The result has a watermark or missing later pages: Check whether you used a restricted demo. SelectPdf’s free demo is limited to five pages and includes a watermark.
Cost and reliability checks before automating
For a single document, the time saved by setting up an API may not be worthwhile. For a recurring workflow, compare the monthly quota and request-rate limit with your expected volume, then account for pages that may exceed payload or render-time limits. A documented free allowance does not imply unlimited use: HTMLPDF.dev’s stated free quota is 100 PDFs per month and 10 requests per hour, while Ironfang documents per-address hourly and per-render constraints.
Best Value
Make the generated PDF an output to validate, not an assumed success. Check that it has pages, expected text and images, and no clipped content before distributing it. Where a provider exposes an API, handle failed requests and timeouts explicitly and retain enough logging to identify whether the issue was input size, page access, or rendering. Avoid retry loops that ignore a service’s rate limits.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I convert HTML to PDF without installing software?
Yes. A browser-based converter can take pasted markup or an HTML file and generate a download; PDF Edit says its conversion runs locally in the browser.
Will any converter preserve every CSS effect and JavaScript interaction?
No. PDF output is a rendered document, not an interactive webpage. Dynamic content must be ready before capture, and print-specific styles can change what appears.
