When you draw a photo into an HTML canvas and export it with toBlob() or toDataURL(), the result is a newly encoded image—not a metadata-preserving copy of the original. Treat it as an edited derivative: keep the original file if its capture date, camera details, copyright information, or location matter.

Why canvas exports can lose photo metadata

drawImage() paints image content into the canvas bitmap. The export methods then encode that bitmap into a new image. The HTML Standard’s canvas serialization algorithm describes the output as image data from the canvas; it does not specify copying the source file’s complete EXIF, IPTC, or XMP metadata blocks.

That makes the safe expectation straightforward: a canvas export is a rendered image, and original photo metadata should not be assumed to survive. The specification does not establish identical handling of every ancillary metadata field in every browser and encoder, so this is not a claim that every implementation strips every possible field in exactly the same way.

Canvas can also write properties of its own. For formats that support resolution metadata, the standard specifies 96 dpi for serialized output. That generated resolution value is not evidence that the original photo’s camera, date, copyright, or GPS tags were retained.

What the export methods do—and don’t do

Method What it returns Format and practical notes
canvas.toBlob(callback, type, quality) Asynchronously supplies a Blob representing the canvas image. PNG is the default and required format; JPEG and WebP are commonly supported. A quality value from 0 to 1 applies to supported lossy formats. Check the returned Blob’s type rather than assuming the requested format was accepted. MDN’s toBlob() reference
canvas.toDataURL(type, quality) Returns a data URL containing an encoded canvas image. PNG is the default; an unsupported requested type falls back to PNG. Its format and quality options do not provide a standard way to preserve the original photo’s full metadata. MDN’s toDataURL() reference

For large images, MDN recommends toBlob() with URL.createObjectURL() rather than toDataURL(). The latter builds an in-memory string containing the encoded image and can create memory, performance, and URL-length problems. This is an efficiency choice, not a metadata-preservation fix.

A JPEG export or a high quality setting does not bring back EXIF tags. These options concern output encoding, not transfer of the source file’s metadata.

Choose a workflow based on what must survive

Workflow Pixel edits Metadata control Best suited to
Canvas re-encoding Useful for compositing, cropping, drawing, and rendering edits. No standard control to preserve all source metadata. Output format and lossy quality depend on supported encoders. Producing a visual derivative when the edited pixels are the priority.
Metadata-aware file processing Can be designed to leave compressed image data intact when possible; pixel changes require a separate image-editing step. Can selectively retain, update, or strip fields if implemented correctly. Workflows that need deliberate control over metadata or need to preserve the original file’s bytes.

Metadata is not automatically good or bad. Location tags can expose where a photo was taken when shared publicly; capture details, copyright fields, and timestamps may be valuable for provenance or archiving. Decide which fields should remain, change, or be removed rather than treating metadata loss as universally harmless—or universally harmful.

How to protect metadata in an upload or editing app

  1. Keep the source. Retain a reference to the uploaded File or Blob. Treat the canvas output as a separate derivative instead of overwriting the only copy.
  2. Decide what the edited file should say. Identify the fields to retain, update, or remove. Crop, resize, or rotate operations can make copied dimensions or orientation information stale; edits may also affect timestamps or the relevance of location data.
  3. Use a metadata-aware step if needed. Read and write the selected fields with a format-aware workflow. Canvas export itself has no standard option for preserving the source’s complete metadata blocks.
  4. Validate the final file. Inspect the exported image’s metadata and confirm that the fields you intended to retain, update, or strip match the result.
  5. Check the actual output format. If using toBlob(), inspect the returned Blob’s MIME type; an unsupported requested type may result in PNG output.

For a browser-based editor, download or archive the original before applying a crop, resize, filter, annotation, or conversion. If the edited download later lacks its former location or camera model, the key distinction is that it is a newly encoded canvas image, not the original file with pixels changed in place.

When a cross-origin image makes export fail

Metadata loss is not the only canvas issue. If you draw an image from another origin without the required CORS approval, the canvas becomes tainted. Readback and export operations such as getImageData(), toBlob(), and toDataURL() can then throw a SecurityError. The HTML Standard’s canvas security rules explain this origin-clean requirement.

Setting an image’s crossOrigin property is not sufficient by itself: the remote server must also grant the needed access. This is separate from metadata handling. A CORS-approved image can still be re-encoded without its original metadata, while an unapproved image may fail to export at all.

Why this matters beyond a missing camera model

A photo may still look unchanged after export even though information used for organization, attribution, or provenance is missing. In a 2013 WHATWG mailing-list discussion, a participant raised metadata loss as a problem for photo-editing applications and noted that adding metadata after encoding can be harder than supplying it during encoding. That discussion is historical context, not a current browser test or a requirement that specifies every browser’s behavior.
