The HP EliteBook x360 1030 G3 is a compact 13.3-inch business convertible with a practical mix of ports and a premium aluminum chassis. Its strongest case today is for buyers who want a light, older Windows 2-in-1 for office work, writing, and presentations—not a modern performance machine. The exact screen, memory, processor, and connectivity depend on the individual configuration, and an aging unit’s battery condition matters more than its original test results.

What the EliteBook x360 1030 G3 offers

HP’s 2018-era EliteBook x360 1030 G3 is a 13.3-inch notebook whose display rotates through 360 degrees for laptop, tablet, tent, and stand use. HP offered several configurations, so the model name alone does not identify the screen, processor, memory, storage, or LTE capability. Check the specific unit or its full product number before comparing listings.

HP’s datasheet lists 8th-generation Intel Core i5 and i7 processors with integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620, up to 16 GB of LPDDR3 memory, and multiple storage options. The display choices include FHD touch panels and a 4K touch option; brightness and finish vary, and Sure View is an option rather than a standard feature. Some configurations offered LTE. These are family-level options, not a guarantee that any one used machine includes them. HP’s EliteBook x360 1030 G3 datasheet and QuickSpecs document the configuration range.

The reviewed configuration

Valentina Palladino’s November 16, 2018 Ars Technica review covered a unit with a Core i7-8650U, 16 GB LPDDR3, a 512 GB PCIe SSD, an FHD touchscreen, Intel UHD Graphics 620, and Windows 10 Pro. That configuration was priced at $2,149 as reviewed in 2018; this is a historical review price, not a current-market estimate. Palladino described the model as an improvement on a familiar design, writing, “HP made the already solid business two-in-one better, but it’s mostly familiar.” Read the Ars Technica review.

Design, portability, and ports

The thin-and-light description is supported by the reviewed unit’s dimensions and materials. Ars Technica measured its aluminum convertible at 0.62 inches thick and 2.76 pounds. HP’s 2020 QuickSpecs list 2.76 pounds as the starting weight, so the figure is a minimum for the product family rather than a promise that every configuration weighs exactly that much. Ars also noted diamond-cut edges and a footprint 10 percent smaller than the prior model.

The port selection is useful for a slim convertible: HP’s QuickSpecs list two Thunderbolt USB-C ports, one USB-A port, HDMI, and a headphone/microphone combo jack. That gives the machine common display and peripheral connections without making every connection dependent on a USB-C hub. It has no SD or smart-card reader, a limitation noted in Notebookcheck’s i5/FHD review.

Which screen should you choose?

Screen choice changes the experience substantially. The standard glossy FHD and optional 4K touch panels suit ordinary indoor productivity and media use; the matte, high-brightness Sure View option is intended for brighter environments and privacy. Do not assume a listing’s G3 label tells you which panel is installed.

Screen type Best fit Trade-offs
Standard FHD touch General office work and a sensible balance for a compact business laptop. Panel finish and brightness vary by configuration; confirm the specific screen.
4K touch Buyers who specifically want the higher-resolution option. It is not universal to the G3 family; the cited materials do not establish a battery-runtime figure for this panel.
Matte 700 cd/m² Sure View touch Work in bright surroundings and situations where a privacy display is useful. Notebookcheck found compromises in image fidelity and battery life; Sure View is optional, not standard.

Andreas Osthoff’s 2019 Notebookcheck review of the Sure View model found that its matte screen suited outdoor work better than the glossy alternatives reviewed, but that image quality suffered. His assessment was pointed: “The Sure View functionality is barely usable because of its compromises on image quality in favour of privacy.” Treat that as a reviewer’s finding about the tested panel, not a universal judgment of every G3 screen.

Battery life: useful context, not a guarantee

The G3 has an internal 56.2 Wh battery that HP’s QuickSpecs say is not customer-replaceable. HP also notes that battery capacity declines over time and with use. For a used unit, the present battery condition is therefore more relevant than the original runtime claims.

Independent review figures offer a point of comparison, but they come from different configurations and test contexts:

Review configuration Reported runtime Test context
Notebookcheck i5/FHD model, July 2018 10 h 02 min Wi-Fi web-surfing test, Balanced profile, with brightness set to an expected 150 nits.
Notebookcheck Sure View model, 2019 8 h 54 min Wi-Fi web-surfing test on the 700 cd/m² matte Sure View configuration.

These are review-protocol results, not expected runtimes for every configuration or a used battery. Notebookcheck also reported that the Sure View model’s runtime fell substantially at maximum brightness. Its i5/FHD review found charging from near empty to full took just under two hours. Notebookcheck’s i5/FHD review and Sure View review describe their respective test units.

Performance, memory, and serviceability

The tested configurations use 8th-generation low-power Intel processors and integrated graphics. That hardware is suited to everyday productivity, browsing, video calls, and document work; the reviewed family has no discrete-GPU option. A used G3 should not be selected for graphics-heavy work on the assumption that the Core i7 label makes it a workstation.

Memory is soldered, so the installed 8 GB or 16 GB cannot be expanded by replacing a module. Decide whether the existing capacity is sufficient before buying. Notebookcheck’s i5/FHD review also reported difficult serviceability and an inability to sustain maximum CPU Turbo Boost on its test unit; those are reviewer observations, not guarantees about every unit’s behavior.

Pen input and convertible use

HP listed an optional Rechargeable Active Pen for writing and drawing; the company said it attaches magnetically to the device. Pen inclusion should not be assumed, and a buyer who needs stylus input should confirm both the accessory and compatibility with the specific listing. The 360-degree hinge enables tablet, tent, and stand positions, but the available review evidence does not establish a current test of hinge wear on secondhand units.

What to inspect before buying a used G3

Because key hardware varies by configuration and the battery is internal, verify the exact unit rather than relying on a broad model description. Prioritize:

  • Display: Confirm FHD or 4K, glossy or matte, and whether Sure View is actually present. Check touch response and look for dead pixels, pressure marks, and uneven brightness.
  • Memory and processor: Verify the installed RAM and exact Core i5 or i7 processor. Since RAM is soldered, the installed capacity is the capacity you will keep.
  • Battery: Ask about battery health and test unplugged operation where possible. Review runtimes are not a prediction for an aged battery.
  • Charger: Confirm that a compatible USB-C power adapter is included. HP QuickSpecs list a 65 W USB-C AC adapter; HP also listed a 90 W USB-C adapter (product number 2LN85AA) as a recommended accessory. Check the exact adapter and seller details rather than assuming any USB-C charger is equivalent.
  • Hinge, keyboard, and ports: Test the hinge through its range, keyboard, touchpad, USB-A, both USB-C/Thunderbolt ports, HDMI, audio jack, and touchscreen.
  • Connectivity and storage: Verify SSD capacity and whether the unit has LTE if those features matter to you; neither is guaranteed by the model name.

Is it still worth buying?

The EliteBook x360 1030 G3 can make sense as a discounted, carefully inspected machine for light productivity when its screen and memory fit the buyer’s needs. Its compact metal convertible design, useful built-in ports, and optional pen support remain appealing. The counterweights are its age, soldered memory, internal battery, configuration complexity, and the fact that its historical reviews cannot establish current condition or value. The available sources do not establish present-day pricing or availability, so judge a listing by the exact specification and condition rather than the original premium positioning.
